Chapter 516: 8.07.1 Time to find a new home.
Jester, the man he made dealings with disappeared since that day, and through the little spies that remain in Yethel, he had come to learn that there had been a bit of a shakeup among the higher-ups of the country, with it slowly turning into a Monarchy, following on the same steps as Cynark. This sounded odd, as the little interaction that Duke Wortham had with Jester showed that he was not a being who cared too much about bloodlines or monarchy. He was a modern monster who developed a perfect way to exploit his people while also bringing a sort of equality.
So why would he go and destroy the system that took decades to establish, a system that earned Yethel its first win against Cynark?
The answer was obvious, the little cooperator he made recently probably fell into some conspiracy, and now he is not active anymore.
But this didn’t mean Jester had disappeared, there were still many small sects that kept popping up chanting his name. Which became odd as time went by.
He could notice some oddities, the small undercurrents that only people of his level would understand, which is what brought him to Rudrain, where the activity of Jester’s men was the highest.
Though the Duke’s reason for coming here was never theirs, he came here to meet up with his distant family who hated him.
And it was during this visit, that he found out about Rosso.
"Enough about the past. Explain why you initiated the search despite my warnings."
"... A few in our Church remain ignorant; they do not understand the reasons."
"Then discipline the hot-headed ones. I do not wish to witness a repeat of past mistakes." Duke Wortham’s voice was sharp, making the woman sweat. "We understand."
"Your understanding is not needed, just your agreement. Keep in your line Lady Lies, this is my one and only warning." Duke Wortham threatened without a hint of remorse towards his old friend.
When it came to the purpose he lived for, nothing could stop him. And this particular ’individual’ that had found himself in this city of Rain would find out soon enough the mistake he made for coming here.
The mistake of exposing himself to the world, in Duke Wortham’s eyes.
"As you say, Duke." The woman bowed in respect, before turning to look at a Duke for a bit and speaking in a strong tone. "But we will act in case that man dares to harm us." The second time, Rosso had only shown their face which caused such a strong reaction on the Church’s side. The Grand Priestess Agreed that it was her mistake.
This is why she consented to back off on this front, but the moment that man becomes the instigator again, she won’t hold back, and she wishes for the Duke to understand this front. "I won’t hold man’s hand."
"Absolutely, I wouldn’t like it otherwise." The Duke was not like one of those arrogant Nobles who were incapable of understanding the nuance of a situation, so he gave free rein to the church to act as long as Rosso was the instigator. "But I still warn you, don’t let even a drop of his blood spread out, wait for the arrival of my men."
"As I spoke before, We understand." The Woman smiled as she spoke before pausing for a bit and then asking. "Sir Duke, now that you are here, I wonder if you would acquiesce to a simple request of mine."
"... Madan lies, you must be aware why I entered the Church’s Domain."
"You came here to warn us, nothing more." The woman nodded. Before she pointed toward a particular building far into the distance, which to the Two transcendence was easy to see without an issue. "I wonder if the Duke can understand, what kind of being is living in there."
There were many reasons the Church backed off for now and chose to hold their actions.
It was their leader, The Grand Priestess’s order over the matters. She didn’t wish for the situation to escalate before she learned who this man was and what was the level of his capability.
As making enemies so foolishly would be unfavorable to the Church’s way of operation, it would be asking for destruction.
Which is why they wait, which is why they were overlooking the shop like hyenas, but never acting on their desires. These were the signs of their rationality.
"I have heard of the matters, are you sure you would like to request my aid?" Duke Wortham found this a bit intriguing. Although not completely involved in the matter nor holding any interest in it. He knows why the target was able to escape this time as well.
Something dangerous had attracted the attention of the Grandmaster Knights who were on the hunt for Rosso. Causing them to back off and provide support elsewhere.
So this matter did reach his ears, and why there is not much anger on his face. Because if not for that pawn shop, Rosso might still be pursued by a third party. "We took a blow this time, I believe that asking this much won’t be much of an issue."
"Hmm... well, I as well have been a little curious over this odd sailor. But meeting him. Now that is not something to be done during the night. I don’t wish to be a bad guest by disturbing someone’s sleep.." Duke Wortham still had a sense of nobility in him, even if he hated most of the nobles.
It’s better to not disturb someone during their resting hours with an unannounced visit. Which the Grand Priestess can’t deny.
However, there is one thing that can be asked. "We just wish to understand how dangerous this man is." The Church had no cardinal-level priest helming it at the moment due to certain reasons. Meaning that the Church of Truthful Deceit was not at its peak power at the moment. They had to take each step with absolute care and hence understanding of the Sailor named Heroth was necessary.
"If you wish to know if that odd man in the house is strong, then he is and not. As for now, the most I can tell you is the strength he possesses barely reaches the peak of a Master Class. The Rest, I am incapable of finding."
"... I understand, this much is enough."
Everyone knew that this Sailor’s strength was different. From the retelling of events and the odd being that was woken up in Heroth’s body during the event, it can be considered that there were at least two individuals in the body, one stronger than the other. And the weaker one was currently in control.
But that was something already known to virtually everyone, what the woman wanted to know was the extent of the capability of this odd new enemy.
Which she can now measure after even the Duke was incapable of detecting. ’Not someone we should mess with.’
With the discussions over and the Grand Priestess showing Duke Wortham out of her district, she returned to her temple and spoke. "Convene a meeting, at this very moment."
*****
"This man seemed much stronger than the Leader." Heroth opened his eyes in a slightly drunk stupor.
The alcohol Raja brought was truly the real deal, tasting as bad as the one he used to drink in his youth and impacting his body just like the cheap grog did before. "It’s been so long." He got up from his bed, finding not too far into the distance that Raja was still asleep. He also seemed weak to alcohol.
Though one can’t be blamed, rarely does one fight off a strong concoction that can affect a transcendent body. "Hah, it’s good he didn’t come here, otherwise I don’t know if I can run away even if I wanted to."
Heroth although unwilling had come to a simple understanding. He can’t stay here, as trouble will be pushed his way, which would be the opposite of the life he wanted to live. "Should have gone to Yethel, that place is much better than before."
Yethel was also one of the places he had taken a vacation in multiple times before and that was always his first choice of a vacation, but for the last few decades, he had been scared of that land due to a certain comical reason.
It’s better to live in a small village than stay anywhere close to wherever that thing lived.
"It was good while it lasted." Those were his words while looking outside the window.
Although the Grand Priestess might not have understood what the Duke did during his little checkup, Heroth understood the actions very well.
It was a straight face warning. Although they were miles away from each other, Heroth could tell clearly that the bloodlust that the Duke exuded was real, and if he stayed there for any longer, only more problems would occur.
Though, leaving so haphazardly didn’t sit well with him. There were also those odd people who followed him to no one and had tried to kidnap him when he initially came here.
Who knows what might happen if he leaves the city now, they might just attack him.
"I can’t run away in the dark, it needs to be in the open, those rich city folks will keep each other occupied, I hope they do." Leaving Raja alone in his room, Heroth walked down to the ground floor and collected all the little trinkets that he was on sale, before pocketing some extra things he earned recently as well.
