Chapter 340: 16.01.1 Hated.
’Its time to learn some proper magic.’
A year has gone by since the Phuket incident and life has returned to normal for me. "Crow, Transfer these books back to library." Living as a Mage scholar in the academy directly under Tower of Storms was not as grand as many might have imagined.
A Mage scholar is one that might not hold strong magical prowess, but they are well versed in the magic theory than many apprentice mages.
One can even call Mage Scholars, Mystics of mage department, but weaker and much more useless when it came their future opportunities. As they either go the path of a teacher, a mage’s assistant or become an investigator that tracks down mages.
And it’s easier for one to understand what I was doing here. "Yes Mage Adam." I bowed to the man, my teacher and slowly arranged the books back in the library.
Here I was a nobody. Brought to the school due to connections of some powerful people, not everyone liked me. Part of it might be because of my race but the main reason still remained.
’They hate nepotism.’
Currently, in the Academy of environmental Sciences, which was directly under the Tower of Storm. Most of the professors and students went through countless tests and obstacles before they were able to walk in this grand academy.
But for me, a call from above, and I joined them at equal level.
No, I joined at an elevated level considering I had my own room in the academy, which many part-time teachers still didn’t possess.
As for my teacher, Mage Adam. An adept level Mage of transmutation system. He looked haggard and old while scrubbing away at his notes. Sometimes burning away a piece of paper with a flip of his finger, sometimes falling back in his chair while his pen still kept writing.
"Your task is done?"
"Yes teacher." At my response, he looked toward me curiously, before sighing. "You still stand after saying that. Do you have any questions?"
"Yes teacher. Among the Giana’s Magnetic field studies, the attractive and repulsive forces can either be one or another. So how did the conceptual magic she used worked? How did she use magnetic fields to mold metal?" The books here mostly spoke of theories or histories, never going into details how one magic was created and their intricacies.
Curiosity was my weakness and the day I came across this magic, I couldn’t help but wonder over how inefficient it was. Or was it my low perspective that couldn’t see the potential this held?
"Good questions. Most just study and ignore it, thinking this is how things should be. But they are very wrong." Adam was a straight-faced mage who didn’t care how I found my way into the academy. To him, as long as I helped him a bit, Adam didn’t mind parting some of his experience and Knowledge to him.
It’s why he was chosen by me to be my new teacher, after my last one just died not too long ago.
Poor Max, he would be remembered.
"Not all magic is done for practicality and lethality. They are the greatest tools for us to understand the secrets of this world and Archmage Giana did such experiment for the same reason." With a wonderment on his face, Adam spoke as if drunk. "For a person on her level, a touch of her hand, she could turn a house to mud, what could a small piece of metal is in front of her."
"So to her, it was not about achieving a specific goal, but she wanted to understand how to reach that goal to begin with. And that’s what she did in this experiment."
"Creating very small magnetic fields, the size of a single dot, she used those to manipulate the metal to her will, making her understand of magnetic forces deeper, which she used to finalize her thesis on the magnetic forces of this very world itself. You can read her thesis In D2 bookshelf, if you are curious about it."
"... Thank you teacher, I would do my best to learn it."
I am currently free. Free after years living on the edge followed by unending responsibilities. So I used this free time as an opportunity to learn more things along the way.
Making me almost recall the days when I was with Kassandra, and she acted like my eyes into the mortal world.
The only difference now is, I am picking and reading the books by myself.
’Magic is versatile... most of all, Transmutation. Although the Arcana school is still at the head. It won’t be long before it’s kicked down.’ It was a conclusion i came to after seeing the potential in transmutation.
Arcane mages are too limited by elemental energies they wield.
In a mana rich environment, no one could have compared to their destructive powers, as Arcane mages could easily convert the mana in their surrounding into their elements without worry. While a transmutation mage could only absorb the mana and not convert the mana out of their body.
They even need proper mediums for their magic to work
But in a low mana environment?
Arcane mages are easily neutralized, while there won’t be much difference for a Transmutation mage.
But none of that was actually the reason I liked Transmutation more than Arcane.
My main reason was simple.
’One won’t be limited to their elements and can freely master multiple control techniques.’
There were very few spells in Transmutation system, instead, one’s own understanding of alchemy and chemistry is what gave power to a Transmutation mage’s power.
And it just so happened, that most of the mages in Tower of Storm belonged to the Transmutation system.
"Crow, how is the studying going?" Suddenly a kind voice asked me from the side. A beautiful face followed by a group of young mages who were barely at apprentice level. "Much better than before. I finally found an interesting subject."
"Oh, can you tell me, what is it?"
"Magnetic field studies. The subject seems to hold loads of potential for the future if we could properly harness it." Hearing my words, some of the students at the back laughed and scoffed at me.
’I guess, it did sound a bit too grand for a dwarf like me.’ But their mockery was not of interest to me. I just waited for the girl’s reply. An expected reply, which was more of a request.
"Oh, is it? Can I please borrow that boo..."
"Not yet, I just started. I will be returning it to library in two weeks... or you can just check, if there are any copies or not."
Her name was Vinnie, daughter of a failed apprentice mage that couldn’t walk past the hurdle of adept throughout his life. Which in my eyes is piss easy. So he threw all his hopes over Vinnie, hoping she would succeed at things he could never.
And she was better than her father, smarter and steadfast in her goals, she never looked back to those left behind, but she also never looked down on them. And with time, the people that were defeated by her brain and kind nature slowly became her fans.
An entourage of sorts.
But there was one thing that others didn’t know, but I knew.
’She is envious and greedy of my position.’
I worked close with Adam, and she wished to become his assistant as well. So since the first meeting, she always came to bother me and tried to look for books I generally studied, in hopes of taking over my job as student assistant.
But that is not going to happen. Who is to tell that my admission in the academy is not the only time I used my connections. But even my job with Mage Adam was acquired through similar methods.
Though, considering she really didn’t hold any negative intentions against me, I would not touch her in any way.
No, in a way, she was a good rival.
"Two weeks? Isn’t it a bit too long? Let me borrow it for a day at most, I will copy the contents and give it back to you."
Hearing such words, I ended up nodding to her. "Ok, but hand me some pocket change, as without that book, my day could be considered wasted."
"... Are you a beggar?" One of the man behind her spoke, obviously annoyed with me.
But I didn’t even bother to smile, just placed my hand forward and asked. "Its what you would owe me for it. "
And she did.
"Crow, don’t be a nuisance to the actual student, just hand it over to her. You can go and pick something else." The voice of annoyance. I turned and found a beautiful woman standing not too far from us. Obviously older and using magic to hide her age and some marks. But her words were something I had heard a lot of times before.
