Chapter 224: 4.04.3 The priority.
The night was still fresh in her mind. The fear and desperation as she ran with her only daughter in the cold landscape.
How did this happen and why, she had no knowledge of it, as for the source, she knew too well. But that was not the priority, even if others die, her daughter has to survive. Because as long as she does, there will be some hope for her family. A desire filled with selfishness.
It was why Rajara Lake was able to hold back her emotions, the dread of knowing that her husband and others were probably dead. She could do so just because of her daughter.
The very same daughter whom she had kept a watch on throughout these years, following Pierta who succeeded in rescuing her daughter, she had been up to date with the experiences Remira had since then.
Of course, all of them were limited and mostly focused on public knowledge. All she can do is focus on the news concerning a Radiant Knight named Remira and that’s it. But that was it, she never dared to approach her daughter in fear that the people from the Cynark who had kept watch over her would obviously track Remira as well.
Rajara can’t afford that, she might be secure due to her name Lake. But the same can’t be said about Remira, who carried that accursed bloodline.
Which she had hoped would disappear after accepting the blood of the Tyrant, which was the First knight. But that obviously didn’t work, as the Daugrs still felt her bloodline and wished to end her, just like they did her family all those years ago.
And if she didn’t think wrong, more and more would awaken, as long as Remira stayed here.
"Enough Mira, this is no time for this." Rajara felt good when her daughter hugged her. A warmth that she had forgotten came to her again. The feeling of belonging, the feeling of being secure. Which was odd, considering it was a mother’s job to protect her child. ’She really grew up.’
"And there is no need for the apology, instead, I should thank you and your family’s totem god," Rajara said in a cold tone, unlike her previous one. Her words imply her distancing from Drischal’s bloodline.
Which Remira failed to catch at the moment, due to her suffering from emotional turmoil the kind she hadn’t in a while.
So much so that she didn’t notice the appearance of Gehena and Richards, who were treating their injuries after the scuffle with Farhad. But it didn’t mean they didn’t notice it.
They looked at Remira with worry and fear, readying their weapons in case Remira did something to the professor. But under the gaze of the professor, they held their hand and didn’t make much sound, while Remira was led deeper into the facility.
"Those emotions," Gehena said before a smile appeared on her face.
"What emotions?" Robert thought, taking a sigh of relief after seeing that Remira was not close to them anymore, though his mind was still on the professor, who might be in danger.
"Don’t you think Professor Lake and that Knight looked a bit similar?" At Gehena’s comment, Richard’s eyes turned wide as it would seem he understood something.
"No wonder the professor is obsessed with this place." They were unaware of Rajara’s past, being mere employees, they were only informed on the details that were important to their operation, nothing more and nothing else.
But it didn’t mean they were blind to the information that was circulated among the researchers here. They were privy to it and when the current detail that Gehena just found out was to be added, they could finally get the whole picture.
"Enough, think like we didn’t see anything. Focus on our work."
"What work? Isn’t it the end?"
"No, that boy seemed to be going wild. We might have to hold him down." Hearing such words, the eyes of Richard turned a bit worried.
"....We awakened a bunch of those Daugrs, do you think he will be safe?" Originally, they treated Remira as well as the boy that she brought here, nothing more than a previous guest, their purpose was to become a science experiment, no matter their background.
That’s what they have been doing till now and it’s why we’re free to use their full might against them. But the situation has obviously changed.
"There is no need to care for the boy, close all the entrances and go back to recuperate. As for Richard, I would find a suitable foot for you soon enough."
Said Doctor Dinesh from a loudspeaker in their room, causing Richard to bow towards them, before he dragged himself to do what the Doctor asked, with Gehena following after him.
Why this was done, she didn’t know. But this was obviously not as she had imagined before.
*****
"Remira, this is Doctor Dinesh, who I believe you haven’t already met?" Remira looked toward the doctor, having the same face as the two before while covered in a similar magical shield. "A true body this time?"
"If you think it is, then it is Sir Knight. But, let’s keep such discussions for later, we have something important to talk about now." Dinesh said before looking at Rajara, who nodded toward him to focus on his work.
"He is right Remira, there is something I wish to talk to you about." There were sounds of combat being heard from the speaker not far from her and the grunt of a beast that felt familiar. Remira knew that Farhad might have lost his mind in the carnage again, but she didn’t speak much.
All she needs to do is cut his neck.
"Then speak, I wish to know what is more important than where you were all these years," Remira asked, causing a helpless smile to appear on her mother’s face.
"I will speak about it as I had promised, for now, I wish to know. Who that boy is and why have you brought him here with you>" She asked, causing Remira some confusion. "Why are you asking me? As far as I can recall, that man didn’t seem to show much interest in Farhad."
"Farhad... then he is the Son of that dead Marshall?"
"... Explain to me what this is about?" Remira was surprised, she never expected her mother to be aware of this.
"It’s hard to explain... but how about some tea?" At Rajara’s words, the same old man Remira met before came with a flask in his hand. "This one I brewed recently with a dash of ginger and cardamom, but that doesn’t overpower the tea, you can still smell the leaves."
"Let me introduce you for real, this is Hamuk, the Guardian of the Door and also the only Grandmaster level Knight among our group... you can even think of him as the last line of defense if something goes awry," Ramara said as she took the tea from Hasmuk in a clay glass, before handing it to the startled Remira.
’This man is a Grandmaster?’
What was a Grandmaster?
They were a peak that even Varkus hadn’t been able to achieve, but had hopes of. The Grandmaster is considered the peak of the mortal grade, before one transitions into a higher rank being. And if they were in any city, they would obviously either lead it or be its very protector, if one were to ignore cities like Bothal where the Legendaries sat.
And now, someone as grand as that is acting as the guard for the door?
’I didn’t expect him to be this strong.’
"Haha Professor, what is strength in this age of enlightenment, it’s people like you that will advance the world, not savages like us from a bygone era," Hasmuk said with some embarrassment while giving some tea to Dinesh as well, before stopping. "Even puppets drink these days?" Before sipping that glass of tea himself.
Leaving Dinesh with a sad look.
"Oh yeah, where is that boy? I can recall he was the coldest one, some tea should be good for his health."
"..."
"He is stuck between those undead, I would appreciate it if you could save him and seal him. He might not be in his right mind at the moment." Rajara ordered.
"You should have told me about this before... I will go and bring him to you."
"No, it would be better if you put him in cold storage. Freeze him for now, if possible." At those words, the smile of Hasmuk disappeared for a while, looking deeply at Rajara and then Remira, who was obviously that boy’s companion.
"I acquiesce to it. When he doesn’t die even with his head off his body, that won’t do anything to him." Remira didn’t know what her mother meant by sealing him or why. But her mother had obviously noticed something and she seemed to almost hold some fear toward Farhad.
’Don’t tell me. This whole discussion, the topic that held more priority than her mother explaining her reason, all of it had something to do with Farhad?’
And when Hasmuk had left the scene, only then Remira looked toward her mother, while putting the tea on the side, without taking a single sip. Although she was sure it was her mother, she still couldn’t abandon her suspicions so easily. Things were too odd at the moment, there was still a high chance these people were responsible for the tragedy that struck her family.
As for why her mother would work for them She didn’t know.
But it didn’t hurt to listen to her.
