Chapter 211: 4.01.3 The beautiful voice.
Remira recalled what she read in the notes.
The village was no more, not even a single piece of house remained. The shelling that continued for a week had turned the whole village into dust.
It would be more appropriate to call it that it’s been turned into a small lake. An eternal frozen lake, which was also part of a great seal to ensure that nothing escaped the curse.
Which was not so far from the cemetery. Going a bit further, reaching that frozen lake is not a dream. It was that lake that used to be her home, also the place of most of her childhood memories as well as tragedies.
But she didn’t plan to go there. She was called here to meet someone, someone very important to her. As for who?
She can’t remember for some reason. All she knew was that she needed to come here, her hometown. The place of origin.
And to ensure her journey would be smooth and safe, along with the need to know the true origins of the Drischals bloodline. Some of the Radiant Knights had already come to conduct their personal investigation. But all they could find was snow and a cemetery that appeared normal from the surface, but it was obviously not.
Walking to the cemetery, flames burned on Remira’s hand, which slowly spread to her sword, which she stabbed into the tomb.
"Captain... this is not right. Disturbing the dead." Farhad said, a bit worried over the action of Remira. Although in his culture, the bodies were usually cremated for purification and his people also looked down on the practice of burying a body.
But being a learned individual he understood why these kinds of cultures and methods were formed. And besides, these traditions also achieved a similar effect of purifying the body and helping it ascend to nirvana.
Which was why he held some respect for these practices, even if he didn’t follow them.
So seeing someone desecrate it, he felt a bit perturbed. Not to mention, it was a Radiant Knight doing such a deed. Which was odd in itself.
But when this Radiant Knight opened her mouth. "There is nothing here to disturb." Farhad shut up. Confused, he walked next to Remira and looked at the place where Remira’s sword was struck, there was nothing but water.
Which was easy to see as it was melted snow, but upon closer look, the whole tomb was empty, leaving a small pool of Water.
"Someone excavated the bodies?" Farhad finally understood why he might have come here. A misconception, born out of lack of information. He didn’t even know this was the home village of Remira.
Nor did Remira wish to tell him, letting him learn how personal this was to her. Nor did she wish for the true nature of her heritage to be learned by an outsider like Farhad.
"Raksgaurd Drischal, from 1456-1566 ’A loving protector!’. Born in Chaitra and died in Falgun. He died a day before his birthday. " Reading the epitaph that was three centuries old. Farhad felt a bit odd.
Who in the world would excavate three century-old bodies from the snow? Would there anything be left anymore? Won’t it all be rotten and merge with the land again?
And even if the snow can keep the body a bit fresh for a while, the moment the snow melts, the rot will set in. But after a bit of thinking, he recalled that a profession called Tomb raiding exists in the world.
It’s not a great profession in the novels, where the heroes explore the tomb of gods. In truth, it was one of the lowest kinds of thieves that steal from the dead.
’But who would come here to do such a thing?’ Taking that weird wolf into account and now this. Farhad knew that something odd was going on.
"Farhad, check other tombs, just see if they have been dug, no need to melt the snow like me." With those words, Farhad went around and checked the tombs, along with Remira.
And while he just focused on the center to make sure the tomb was excavated, Remira was a bit more thorough, she checked the edge of the tombs as well.
Among these, she found claw marks next to some. Most of the bodies were barely a century old.
"This seems to be a family tomb of Drischanls, besides a few exceptions. Most carry that name." The exceptions he talked about were the people who married into the Drischals. But never abandoned their names.
Or some retainers that were close as family to them.
"Who would do such a thing here?" Farhad thought before looking toward Remira, who suddenly looked at the front with her hand on her sword as if readying herself for an approaching threat.
When added to the empty tombs, it was easy to see who it might be.
But before Farhad can say a thing. Remira ordered him. "Stay there, no need to involve yourself in this... it’s just one person. A very weak one."
The opponent was not weak. From the floral smell, it was easy to see that the opponent was a woman. And from the smell of gunpowder, it was easy to see that the opponent packed some punch.
As for what kind of weapon it was? Remira can’t ascertain. But coming this close to them, while carrying such firepower showed the confidence of the opponent.
It was her way of saying that she didn’t need to set up ambushes for her opponents, nor was there a need for such weak things.
As for letting Farhad join in this fun?
No chance. She won’t let Farhad fall for it, fall to his bloodlust, and let that Bastard succeed. So she ordered him to stop.
"Any further and I will consider you an enemy," Remira warned, causing the figure to stop. But Farhad still couldn’t see anything.
"I don’t intend to fight, I am just here as a messenger." The voice came, startling Farhad.
’She sounds beautiful.’ The voice was sweet and heavy at the same time, like the majestic cry of a whale. It was peaceful, which Farhad didn’t expect to hear from his opponent.
"My mother told me to never follow a stranger into a weird place," Remira said, as her sword caught fire. The pure fire of Radiance, which caused the interest of the opponent to rise, made her walk a bit closer, causing her body to be visible to Farhad for the first time.
’She looks beautiful as well... that charm. It’s dangerous.’ Farhad was not of a weak mind. Not after some of his past memories surface again, helping him maintain his calm in front of such a beauty.
"Any further, and I would consider you an enemy." Remira was ready to strike when the woman came close.
"I didn’t see wrong, you are one of those Radiant Knights." She said, trotting a pistol in her hand, as she asked. "Did they really find something?"
"So you were here during their investigation?" Remira found this interesting.
If this woman and that Doctor of hers can hide from the investigators, then she can’t look down on her.
Add to that, there was no mention of a third party present here. All they found were some traces of the undead and the hollow tombs of her family.
They even went as far as to melt the lake and searched the ruins of her castle under it. But all they could recover was some rotten notes, while most of it was burned.
But they never came across something living. Someone like this woman.
Then she wondered. ’She didn’t expose herself to the previous investigators, she hid from them. But now she approaches me without knowing who I am?’
It was easy to see, that her intentions although not clear, were not great as well.
"Yes we were, but we had no intention of any conflicts. I am here only as a bodyguard and nothing more. And if not for the Doctor, who would bother coming here in the cold weather." The woman said.
"State then, what are you and that doctor doing in this forbidden zone? Depending on your answer, I would judge your ensuing treatment." Remira was at an impasse though. Although the woman was a Master level figure like her. Remira knew that her opponent didn’t stand any chance against her, or what she had become.
The mutations in her bloodline were immense. She was far from normal.
So when she said those arrogant words, they were treated as inevitability by her. To her, it was the truth.
And the woman seemed to have felt it as well. "I would have answered if I could. But I am under contract and only the doctor can answer your question. And for that to happen, you have to follow me... or not. Just so you know, this place is much worse than the time your people came here."
"The old ones woke up?" Remira said, turning to look at the tombs, which surprised Gehenna.
"Not as ignorant of the state as I would have assumed. But you guessed correctly. Due to the Ban, they can’t walk out of this place. But it doesn’t make them any less threatening."
At this point, Farhad was horrified. Ignorant of the situation as he might be. It was easy to see what the two people were talking about.
’Undead?... Did this undead really walk in the snow?’ But he didn’t say a word, he was not foolish enough to go against Remira’s words.
Not unless she asks for something that goes against his bottom line. And this was just a request to be silent.
