The God of Jesters

Chapter 177: 3.11.3 A bit of delay.

The true names of gods are forbidden to the mortal ears, for they hold a vestige of that god’s power, whose mere mention would cause a corruption of the speaker’s psyche.

There have been cases where gods have been resurrected from the dead after their names were called a few times one after another. Evil gods and beings that had brought disaster to the world.

Such is the reason that the name of a god is barely mentioned in any religious text or historical books. It was a way to prevent the resurrection of an old existence and prevent any corruption of the human heart.

Even Lakram was the same, his name carried enough weight to kill a total of eleven of my proxies, which went to show just how weak he was when he walked this earth.

Eleven rats are a good exchange for learning precious Lakram’s true name. Of course, I can’t call it out loud enough, because his remnant will still target those that do.

"What kind of god?... What does that have to do with me?"

"It’s your god, the one who gave you that precious blood. But let’s talk about it later... Let’s talk about the job." I said, causing my eyes of Max to turn turbid before he looked at the dried finger of the boy that was on the table and then asked. "It’s there, take it." He said, but I just shook my head in disappointment.

Of course, he couldn’t see it. "No use anymore, all the potential of that finger had been drained by someone else... meaning you fai..."

"... Failed? Do you treat me like a fool? I was close to dying there and you say I failed?" He was angry. Angry at his weakness and his own failure.

Of course, he understood why I said those words. I have clearly told him why I wanted that finger, why I was in a hurry. But he still failed in the end and the finger turned into a proxy of someone else’s curse, which in hindsight was not in his control. The boy’s body was long parasitized by a protective curse which Max ended up triggering.

But it was his fault, he should have been prepared. And I am not a babysitter that would explain everything to him.

Not to mention, this still ended up working to his advantage, as he is now awakened. He had turned into a Master level Druid Knight. "You will give me her location, you will tell me where she is... or our contract ends today." He threatened, pointing his finger at my body, which was inside his ear.

Putting me in a hard place. "Destroy the bug if you want, but this is your fault at the end of the day. Remember the contract, remember what I said before. You fail to bring me the finger on time, you can forget about her location."

"Stop treating me like a fool, I bet you knew about the state of the finger... aren’t you a curse user yourself? Didn’t you sense where I would be hit by the curse before? If that was so, how could you not know the finger was the medium used here?"

"You pushed me into this trap, you fucking bastard. You used my daughter and pushed me to my death." Max was boiling with anger. The little bit of trust he had developed in the past few months turned to nothing, just like that. But it’s not like I can completely predict the outcome of my actions so easily. And he was not wrong there as well.

"So you will tell me. You will spit out her location and the bastard directly responsible for her death."

So much disrespect was thrown my way, that I couldn’t help but curse as well. "What can you even do... You were the one to not uphold the promise. Not to me, nor to your daughter."

"Shut up! The next time you speak of her, you will have to tell me where she is or consider this whole contract gone. I won’t be killing for you anymore." The current Max already had multiple names in his head and with his history of working as an assassin, he believes that even without my help, he will soon find the true mastermind behind all of this.

And he had already found multiple names through the list of names I had sent him before. Names that were involved in this case one way or another and if believes with a bit of effort it won’t be long before he finds an answer.

Which was one hundred percent true. I don’t hold much value in his eyes. Besides the fact that I did know his daughter’s location, or to be specific, the location of her remains. "I lost Eleven of my employees due to you, you are not leaving so easily, after causing me such a loss," I said and before he could speak more, I continued. "And it’s not like I won’t give you her location, it’s just a bit delayed."

At my words, his face seemed to calm down for a bit, before asking for his daughter’s location once again.

"You know better than anyone else, I am someone who keeps my promises. I will speak of her location to you, as long as you make sure that the other mission I handed you didn’t turn bad."

"Other missions?" He wondered for a bit, before recalling Salvarez, who still needed protection. "That detective?" He asked, before looking at this body. "I don’t believe I have much time?"

"It’s already a miracle that they haven’t attacked him as of yet. But it won’t be long before they do." I answered him. As for the reason for the delay?

Of course, the cause was Max himself, his actions had sent the whole city in shock. Constant attacks of such high profile nature and the city couldn’t do anything about it.

Making CBI busy and now a total of Six operatives were active in the city. But that was only on the surface, as for the operatives that became active during the night? One can’t even count.

I don’t even know how many operatives and officers were roaming the city, waiting for Max or others like him to make a mistake and get found out. Which had postponed Blue’s little plan as any actions during this time would probably earn ire from the leading figures of Bothal. And if any further accident would obviously push Bothal to take harsh steps and send out the forbidden Arch-level figures to hunt Max.

Someone that Max can’t even survive on his own. Even Sheva would be nothing more than an annoying little ant in front of them.

But even with my words and knowing how serious the situation was, Max shook his head. "Give me the location first, tell me where she is... Any information. Any assurance will do. Only then will I take this job."

"Well, I don’t mind telling you some stuff," I said, before smiling. A smile that Max couldn’t see. "In a way, your daughter might be alive... just not the way you would like her to."

*****

"You lazy bastard, daydreaming again? Come here, there is a job." In a small mechanic shop, a dust-covered Krotal was running around, while his boss shouted at him.

The very same Krotal whose father was killed by Max not too long ago. The same Krotal who had disappeared from the world and now lived as an apprentice to a small-time mechanic.

His dream of living a wild life was not fulfilled as much as he liked. More than anything, for the past few days, his life had been boring, so boring in fact that he started to miss his old life.

And if not for the old mechanic to hold him down whenever he tried to escape. Krotal believes he would have long left this boring city.

"What job? Is it again one of those, fetch stuff?" He asked before the old mechanic shook his head for a bit, before shaking up and down in agreement. "Seems like the little bastard has become a prophet." The old man said before throwing a bag to Krotal. "Here it is, bring it to the Ribert Station seven, it’s on the green line."

"I know where stations are old man, no need to tell me." Krotal picked up the package and was going to leave, before coming to a stop and turning to the dwarf. "Well... who is the receiver?"

"Dunno, the guy said about some huge woman. He claimed that she might stand out."

At these words, the mouth of Krotal shut up for a bit. "That bastard finally remembers me?" Krotal said with a sigh of relief, his face turning bright, as he already knew who gave this job to the old man.

But hearing his words, the old man misunderstood and shouted. "You little shit, who you calling bastard. "

"I.. I didn’t mean you, Boss."

Seems like there will be a bit of a delay on Krotal’s side. Well no worries, I had enough time. So does Salveraz who was slowly turning small after the mutation of his cells started to drop down.

Meaning, the time of his death was coming close.
