The God of Jesters

Chapter 171: 3.10.4 Cellar time.

Death was on every step of the path I had chosen to walk. And it turned out to hold some truth, as according to Captain, my head was crushed not too long ago.

"It’s recovering," I said, looking at my bulbous face, which started to look human as time went by. With the only exception being the lack of hair. "Can’t say the same for my hair though." I made a comment before putting on the mask as well as the cap on my head.

It was time to head out as the Captain had asked me to, too much time had been wasted due to the attack of those assassins, which included my head as well.

As for the hair, it hadn’t grown since I became like this. A sentient ghoul who was capable of thought. The previous jungle on my head was something that got carried over from my old life. As the current me was incapable of growth of that nature.

At least on the head. Because my nails still grow as normal, even a bit faster than before.

Mutations that I have tried my hardest to hide using some nail clippers and makeup that give color to my skin. But in the last few days of my recovery, my head also let my nails grow bigger than before.

"Captain, did you really not find my nail clippers there?"

"As I have said before, just use a blade," Captain said while pointing towards a dagger that was right next to her pistol. But I shook my head. I was not dextrous enough to use a blade.

Nor did I have an option to buy a normal one, which wouldn’t work on my hardened nails at all and would end up broken.

"Ignore my words, Captain," I replied while looking out of the carriage. The children who saw me with the mask gave me a curious look, while the adults went on with their merry way and worked.

A peaceful life they lived, making me envious a bit.

But I know, a life like that was not within my reach anymore. That kind of life was never in my reach. The curse of being born a Maisel.

Being born in a family, haunted by that bastard.

There were a total of four kinds of solutions that Max mostly used.

The Armor-melting acid, the Blazing oil, the Neurotic poisonous oil, and a Hallucinogen, that turned into fumes the moment it touched air.

All of which were used on the so-called Driver of Krugal before. Making the current Max a bit poor.

"It’s impossible to move this night, too many eyes," Max said, looking around the packed streets with officers. But that was not the main problem. Most of the police were just common mortals, incapable of ever matching his pace and strength.

But it’s the badge on their chest that became the problem. The moment he attacks, the police will be able to call in big guns and he won’t have much time to act after it.

And considering he had to enter the house of Ivankov Letzer, one of the Premier Surgeons of Bothal. There was some security.

Calling it some would be an understatement though. The whole mansion was covered with security guards, with many among them being adepts and a few masters hiding in the foray as well. But I can’t speak about the Master level existence to Max. In general, I don’t know of it.

But the normal adept level guards were headache enough, As one shouldn’t forget, at the end of the day. He was still an adept.

"Didn’t expect the security to be this tight... guess we have to abandon this mission." I made a suggestion, but Max shook his head. Thinking in his head. ’They have something to hide, the man is probably involved as well.’

The only reason one would keep such a strong security would be when they have something important to hide from the world. Something they wish to protect. Making the eyes of Max burned with anger.

In his mind, the simple "Surgeon" and the human trafficking that was running in the dark of this country came together and he came to a simple conclusion.

A wrong one, but still a conclusion.

"I can sense some anger in your heart, but let me say this now... I don’t wish for you to harm Letzer, he is important in our plans. Your only job is to bring us his son’s finger." I reminded Max, in fear he might take some inappropriate actions in a bid for revenge.

In his mind, he probably thought Letzer was one of the main culprits in the crimes. Which again, is wrong. But again, I can’t say any of the details to Max.

"A finger, that’s it right?"

"Yes... and let me tell you. I also know a place where you can find some money" At my words, Max started to take off his clothes and then took out his tagger in his hand. "No money, only small precious things." He made a suggestion.

"Not up to me, I don’t even know if you can steal it. But going for it from the start will be best for you, you can try for the finger later." When the child’s finger is cut. The issue will be found eventually. So it was best for him to look for the treasures first and then go for the finger later.

With the goals established, Max’s bare naked body turned invisible, disappearing from the eyesight of common people, as he used the darkness and nimble movements to weave between the guards and then look for an opening.

"... Cellar, not any window, go through the cellar."

"It’s closed.’

"Wait for a bit, you will see an opening.’ With my words, Max waited naked sitting atop a tree, while overlooking the cellar which was the path I had suggested to him.

As for the reason?

This whole house truly was a fortress, unless opened from the outside, all the windows would start blasting with sirens. The outer walls on the first floor and above were even worse. There was a thin wire going through the whole outer wall, living with electricity.

A wrong touch and even if someone like Max won’t die, it would still expose his location and give him some severe burns.

A fact that I learned after a few days of experimenting and trying to enter the mansion. Ultimately forcing me to use the servers as usual to dig my way into the house.

"Four minutes left till the head guardsman opens the door. And from what I have learned, he is a Master level Knight."

Of course, there were a few more hidden around the house, specifically next to Ivankov, when he was at home. Currently in this home, there was no one besides his young son, his older sister, his wife, and her respective family.

As for Ivankov Letzer, he married into the Letzer family, he had no family of his own. An orphan in a true sense who ended up gaining everything an orphan in his position would have ever dreamed of.

"A master level guard? Isn’t he just a doctor?"

"A surgeon my friend. A good one at that. He operated on people who can be considered Bothal Royalty. And these Royal’s have ensured his safety and prosperity. So don’t be surprised by this knowledge.’

With my words, the cellar moved a bit. Which was the cue for Max to move.

Which was nothing close to gambling at this point. Depending on the path of Knight the guardsman walked, as well as his senses, the chance of Max being caught was much higher than one might think.

But this was a gamble that Max needed to take, this was his only path into the house, this fortress.

And he had to time it correctly. As the Guardsman would always keep his eyes on the cellar door until it closed. Giving normal people no chance to ever enter it.

But Max was not normal, he danced along the eyesight of the guard, and moved in such a way that none of his movements created any wind. It was as if he never existed, while he danced in a bizarre way, entering the cellar as it was closed by the maids inside.

Maids with some disheveled clothes and redness on their cheeks.

"We are in," I said to Max, who had already started to look for an exit. But I stopped him before he could move.

"A total of three exits from this cellar, you had just entered from one of them. The other one exits in the kitchen, while the last one goes into the living room. Choose."

"The one closest to the treasure."

"Living room and then turn right to climb the stairs. The old Letzer couple still is a bit old-fashioned. Ole Mrs Letzer likes to keep her treasures under her bed, even now."

Max moved like a puppet, and followed my words like a perfect puppet at this moment. There was no debate or questions at this moment. He was focused on his job, on his revenge. While I was happily waiting for it.

Waiting for the moment when this perfect mission goes to shit.
