Chapter 129: 3.01.1 Look at your enemy.

Much smaller in size and weaker than the nations that occupy the land of the Continent of Brihma, Pulgasari was the home of Dwarves occupied by multiple mountain ranges that provided it with cover from the war of the outside world.

It was what had helped them maintain their independence while sitting on multitudes of rich mineral deposits that made many countries in the ancient past come and buy materials from them, or dwarven-made weapons that were considered top-notch.

But that was the limit. To them, the dwarves have always been a rash bunch, only good at two things and nothing more.

However, all of it changed in the last few centuries when the dwarves started to innovate the material resources they held and came out of their caves.

Slowly building cities made out of metal and stones which rivaled some of the ancient cities propped up with the help of mages. And all of it brought to them by the books from the other side.

The world of mortals where magic doesn’t exist and hence the humans on that side had found something better, something smarter and that was the technology and science that was missing from this world or some might even say, suppressed by the magic.

And if these pieces of books and knowledge were found in some other country, they would have obviously been burned by the mages just like how it has happened multiple times in the past. But the Dwarves didn’t.

To them, the books were gospel and the man who brought them seemed more like a messiah. And hence he was deemed as such.

The first human to live among these Dwarves was from the other side. He spread his knowledge to them and the Dwarves absorbed it like a sponge, slowly building on the knowledge he gave them and creating a truly advanced society.

And due to the mountains that shielded them from the outside world, the Dwarves were able to develop in silence for fifty years before they entered the world just like that man had desired them to.

For his only request from the dwarves was one.

"Please, make the lives of people easier with this knowledge." Was the request of the man known as Venkatraman, and his statue in the middle of the city of Bothal was a sign of respect to him by the dwarves.

Which brings us to the present time.

"My father, he is not here. But I promise, we will pay you back the debt."

Like all stories, there is a beginning. And most of the time, it’s not good.

"Why, so you can run away?... Hah, take her in. We will these bastards have turned too sullen. Letting him live here was kind enough, but they won’t even pay back the money they owe us?"

A debt that was forced on these people who came here to pursue their dreams. Study in the schools and become one of the top researchers. And the girl was like that as well.

"Please don’t... my father... He will be back." She cried and attracted the eyes of some men. But after being beaten and threatened with more increase in their "debt" they were pulled back. But that sole action planted a seed of anger in the hearts of all the poor people who came to look for a bright future.

No, to them, if they don’t stop these leeches who prey on the weak, their dreams will end up in the streets or worse, they might just die.

So the riot started.

But none of that concerned the father, who had found his daughter dead in the compound. What happened to her was inhumane and the anger it caused the father was even worse.

Though, that is the kind of anger that attracted me, who was still weak at that time, barely controlling any rats. But still strong enough to do one thing.

"What do you wish for? Revenge or letting your daughter live again?" I had asked him in his dream. And the answer he gave was not the least bit surprising.

"Both, I wish for both."

That started my journey with him and turning him into one of my first new recruits was easy as well. But this time, there was not an imposing master-servant relationship I built with Kairut. No, there was no need for such a thing at all.

"Clown, where are you leading me, name the place?"

"Well, the place keeps changing. They seem to be in a bit of a hurry." I say while smiling eye to eye, none of which would be visible to my new friend who chose the name Max Parker for himself when he came to this city with his estranged daughter.

A city where he planned to start anew after abandoning his old life which ended with his wife’s death. A new life with his daughter as he slowly integrated into the most secured nation in the world, what was better than this?

Or so he had thought, but when he was out while searching for work, his daughter was taken advantage of and then killed. Bringing him a man with no family anymore.

"Turn right on the next intersection, you will see someone familiar," I say, but he didn’t do as I told him, Instead of following my words, using the night as a cover, he silently crawled on the wall and reached the rooftop, before turning his eye in the direction where I had mentioned before.

"A group of random people... " He said before turning silent, as he noticed how each of these random people was following a pattern. All of them kept an eye on a woman after one turned their head away.

As for the woman, she was not as random as he had wanted. "Why is she here?" He knew the woman very well, although others might not notice it easily. But he who was born in the druid bloodline had his own way of sensing other’s vitality, it is what helped him find his target among a group of people and in rare cases with special individuals like the one on the front, he can remember the vitality in their body, its nature.

And he had only seen this level of heat one time in his life.

"She has grown up." He spoke with a smile, sitting on the roof, and wondered how this old friend of his would deal with her followers. Because he was not as arrogant to believe she wouldn’t have noticed it at this point.

Nor would he like to look down on a woman whom he had taught firsthand. And the very same woman who had helped him leave the world of assassinations behind.

Though, all of it was for not and he didn’t wish to show his face to her after what happened to him. He felt ashamed over his own incompetence more than any other thing.

However, all of that worry was truly for nothing. "They are not trying to harm her. They are her bodyguards, protecting someone very important."

"Important?...." Max turned silent for a while. Before asking. "What is her real identity?" It was easy to come to a conclusion. With the past he had with her, he had seen some habits that were common among the rich and affluent people, habits and nature that were hard to hide. And being an assassin, he had to learn to pinpoint these details long ago. Making it much easier for him to find her background to some extent.

But the most he came up with was that she was some fallen noble or rich girl who ran away.

And even though the chances of it being the latter still sound high. But with how the clown next to him spoke of her. It seems, her identity was something unexpected.

And the clown did know it for I was the clown who she was after.

"Her true name is Fahna Maisel, daughter of the late Marshall Varkus Maisel. And high chance, she will be your future enemy!"

"Varkus, the man that was at the center of the Durum sleep disaster?" Max found it hard to believe it at first, but knowing that I had no reason to lie currently, he continued. "But why would she turn to a life like that?"

"I thought you would ask why she is here. But to answer your question, it’s simple. She wanted first-hand experience with killing and this job provided her with that experience and that’s it. She is not as kind as you would assume for someone in her position to be. No, in some ways, she is way worse. A villain even."

The hitmen kill for money without any morality or emotions in the process. They would kill good and bad, deserving and undeserving. As long as there was money, they would be there to provide their services.

It was who they were and Fahna used that to build up her repertoire of skills and iron out her will, just for a single purpose.

Which was to replace his father when the time came.

"But she helped me escape with my daughter. So don’t lie Clown, I know she isn’t like that."

"Believe what you want to believe. For now, just know this. You and her are enemies." I calmly explain to Max. "For she has come here for me."

My words were a bit heavy for Max, but considering his nature and skills, he knew how to hide well and that’s what he made up his mind to do. But he still asked one thing. "Why is she after you?"

"... Well, I did kill her little brother and father... but it’s a long story. I will tell you later."
