The God of Jesters -
Chapter 122 - 2.31.5 Sweet little lies.
Chapter 122: 2.31.5 Sweet little lies.
Lies or an act, Adam didn’t know what was the truth. But from the simple fact that his head was going to be skewered not too long ago. It proved that his opponent was not a Jester. A guy who focused more on style than efficiency.
Unlike the young man now, who had attacked him like a well-oiled machine.
"Then Farhad, Son of Varkus Maisel. I am going to go." With one eye and an arm that was forsaken by the god. Adam knew that even with the little mana he had collected. The opponent was not someone he could face on his own.
Not to mention the fact that he was facing an undead with regenerative powers. Facing him now would be too much. So, Adam was smart where it mattered. But before he went away, he did say. "But before that, what happened to Jester?"
In return for the question, Adam faced an offensive from Farhad. Movement is too wild to be considered human. But with his transmutation powers, like dancing on the ground, Adam erected a wall of rubble to shield himself from each attack while backing down more.
"Guess, he fell in your hands." The very fact that Farhad had not responded to that question showed that to Farhad, Jester was not a threat anymore. He was free, hence able to attack so freely. "Do you feel bad for your friend?" Farhad asked, as if mocking Adam.
Though all he got in response was ."Why should I? And besides, the reason I asked this question was to see where he is. And from your response, I am sure that you think he is gone."
"What do you mean I think? I crushed the bastard with my hands."
"Of Course you did, did you do it in reality or one of those dreams?" These words weakened the offensive suddenly, giving Adam a chance to breathe.
"Speak, what do you know of?" Asked Farhad, but Adam didn’t speak anymore and then before Farhad could ask more, he disappeared into smoke. Leaving the words. "He is still watching you." Echoing in Farhad’s ears. But that was it, with the danger gone from the vicinity of his father. Farhad came back to him but was stopped as a small fireball floated above his Father’s hand.
And its target was none other than Farhad.
"Tell me, who are you?" He asked again, finding it truly hard to believe this was his son. "I don’t want excuses or any lies, just say it now. Who are you?"
"I am your son."
"No, my son has many things. But he was nothing like you. He was kind, foolish, and weak. He would never hurt a fly nor even show his true emotions to his father that he hated so much."
"As for you... I can see it in your movements. The bloodthirst you exuded not too long ago. You can’t be him."
"Bu... But... just like that man said. You are not that demon. Then... then who are you?"
Hearing such words, Farhad went silent. He knew how odd it was for him to act so cold, how weird it was for his body to move like this. How unbecoming of him was to have bloodthirst.
"I am me, father... I can’t explain it. But while he had my body, I experienced a different life."
"A life, I would love to talk to you about. But for that to happen, I need to take you out of here."
"So Father, please... let me help you."
The war between the mages, knights and the beast didn’t matter now. Even the thing that floated above their head turned into mere background.
The only thing that did matter was his father. A father he had hated not too long ago. But with time and some understanding, he had come to understand how wrong it was to do that.
Even though he didn’t know the whole story, he knew one thing. His father cared for him and the reason he created distance from him was out of fear of that demon.
But it would seem the Demon still came for him, bringing him misery as well as dragging his father along with him.
Though, those stories and his reasons can come later. For now, he had saved him. It’s the only way to ensure that they can listen to each other’s stories.
"You, are you really him?" Varkus’ eyes turned hopeful for a bit before a single drop of tear fell on his cheek. "Good... Good!" The fireball in his hand disappeared and then he coughed for a bit, prompting Farhad to go ahead and hold his father up.
"Father, we have to leave here now!!" A panicked face, a face filled with emotion that Varkus had looked down on before. He had derided his son for being too weak and emotional. But this worried face had now turned into confirmation.
This was still his youngest son. Just changed after the harrowing experience.
"I am glad, this assures me," Varkus said, ignoring the worried voice of his son that had started to drag his body. "Son, stop now. I have to tell you something."
"We can talk after I take you away from that thing."
"I am a goner son, taking me away won’t change my fate, nor the fate of most of the people here." This was not the first time for Varkus, he had experienced the same thing before. And as if history was repeating itself. He was experiencing it again.
But this time, the positions had changed.
He now played someone else.
’It’s ironic.’
He recalls the promise he made with that man, but now considering the circumstances, he won’t be able to fulfill it.
And this decision was also not something he came to without any thought. He had recalled the way to cure his son’s possession before. The way that Adam had told him.
’Just transfer the ownership of the Flames of Samadhi, then it won’t hurt your son while the flames will protect your son from any outside influence, just like they have done until now with you.’
With suffering from a curse so detestable that he wished for death. Varkus knew that this was the best-case scenario that could happen.
Not to mention, he had been a dead man walking, living on borrowed time for the last twenty years after becoming the new owner of that flame.
Otherwise, the corruption of that god’s vestige might have made him mad or killed him by this time.
Maxim only survived due to the blood of Radiance, while he survived the influence due to the flames he carried.
The very flames, he was going to give to his son now.
As for why?
"No, you are just injured. I bet they have some healing potions around here." Farhad spoke while looking around.
But his father just shook his head. "This is not the kind of injury that potions will heal. And besides, I have to heal you first?"
"Are you healing me? Father... I am fine, this regenerative body is way better than my old one."
"Not that, but the demon that is hiding inside your body."
"I killed him... I crushed his body."
"No, he is nothing, something that gets crushed easily. You don’t know how many have tried and failed to do so.... But this... this is our chance. This is the chance to end him."
"This..." Even with the boost of mentality he gained after his triumph against Jester, it didn’t mean he was completely changed as a person. He was still scared and confused as he had always been. But now, he was able to suppress those emotions if it was required.
But one shouldn’t forget that Farhad was still young. He was not as experienced as his father.
"Can’t we do it after getting away from here?"
Varkus shook his head, saying. "No, we don’t have time."
Looking at the face of his father, Farhad asked. "Then you promise to come with me after this?"
"Yes, we will move away from this place. So just come and accept this gift." Saying the lies, Varkus smiled kindly.
A smile that seemed similar to that of the Jester’s when he was looking at Farhad the rat. But unlike the hate and disgust, Farhad felt at that moment, he found the smile of his father peaceful. It was a smile that suppressed all kinds of fear and confusion he was experiencing now.
"Then come in front of me, I will force my flames into your body and you have to accept them. It’s the only way my flames will clean your body." A lie again, but Varkus knew that this was the only way.
Once he gives the flames to his son, he will die.
Making him unable to ever say the many things he wished to say to his son. The words of love he had suppressed in his heart for his wife, as well as the hugs he could never give his daughter, who had also turned distant to him.
As for his son, he wished to say sorry, he wished to hug him, he wished to tell him how much he had loved him.
But none of that mattered now. Any slip would obviously make his son deny the flames. The very flames that had been keeping him alive till this point.
"Remember son, I have always loved you, your mother, and your older sister. Sorry, I was not able to make time for them. And I promise, after this. I will do my best to be there for you." One last lie to ensure his son would do as he was told.
And with that, he closed his eyes, while the flames left his body and then slowly floated inside Farhad. Who still remained confused over what was happening. But did as his father had told, believing his lies.
As for Adam.
"Jester, my lovely Jester... Those fools finally did it."
He laughed, not believing what he was seeing at all.
Such a timing, such a positioning.
It was just perfect.
