Chapter 539: Golden Coins
At first, Xu Feng placed the two children in a new area that was shaded by boxes, but not in danger of toppling over on the two kids.
Again, he was thankful the two weren’t able to or at least hadn’t tried to crawl anywhere. All the boxes were a hazard to curious children.
Looking at the pile of mess he was responsible for, and the corner he knew he wasn’t responsible for—that corner was drawing his eye a little too much, but now wasn’t the time. What if the two babies woke up? He needed to get a few things organized before then.
First Xu Feng brought the display crib he’d picked—from one of the stores he’d raided—closer to place the children in after he’d changed them. The shaded area seemed like a good idea, but what if the boxes did topple over?
Being an overthinker wasn’t a good mix when children were involved.
If he had the talent, Xu Feng would have thought about building one from the boxed goods so each boy would have his own crib, but he knew he didn’t have the skill, even with the instructions written in plain language. He was never good at that kind of thing, now wasn’t the time to try his luck.
He dressed the two boys in outfits similar to their dads after wiping them both clean—one needed to be rid of the strong pee smell.
Xiao Long’s outfit was a pair of grey sweatpants and a black sweatshirt with cute little penguin detailing along the hemlines. Little socks and a small knit hat were added both with little animals trailing across them.
Who knew if demon-beast babies would catch colds easily? It was better to be safe than sorry. And it was even better to be cutter than just cute.
Xu Feng was pleased with his clothing choices, all the little animal patterns looked particularly cute on his children! He wanted to show Feng Yujie, how cute his own buns were!
After putting the first dragon in the crib, he crouched back down on the grass to change the second cub. Da Long hadn’t peed, but he was still a bit damp from the remnants of the eggshell residue.
When he had a chance, both boys would need to take a warm bath. He wasn’t going to chance anyone getting ill.
With the first experience, Xu Feng wiped down Da Long with a little more skill putting on the 9-month-old diaper. It was the clothing that was a bit trickier. The 9-month-old set to match Xiao Long’s was a bit tight on this cub.
It looked like the two boys would be wearing a different set of clothing in the future.
For now, he dressed Da Long similarly, with black sweatpants and a grey sweatshirt that was the opposite of his brothers. The grey sweatshirt was detailed with elephants across the hemline.
Soon socks and a small knit hat followed. The two cubs looked so sweet in the crib especially when no one was peeing on Xu Feng. If no one was peeing on him, they were especially adorable.
Xu Feng wanted to stay and watch them forever, but his leg was still damp, and he didn’t want to stay in this pile of treasure until they woke up. He couldn’t feed them apple sauce forever...
He could go back to Dongmen with Yujie and her sons, but he couldn’t control his son’s cries. What if they attracted zombies every time they were hungry? That wouldn’t end well.
Raising his sons in Dongmen became even more unattractive instantly.
Walking over to the stream, Xu Feng wasn’t sure if the space had been this big when he had his wine and jam incident, or if it had happened in the last week. It was hard to tell.
That was a thought for a later time. He would need to explore when he was more prepared, and he would also have to get some unpacking done.
Now that he was dressed again, and the boys were still sleeping he had to move fast even though all he wanted to do was lounge around and watch their sleeping faces. He had been moving around nonstop for nearly two weeks. His lazy bones were tired but now was not the time.
Xu Feng found a convenient baby bag before changing his mind. This one was a backpack, but how would he wear the backpack and carry both children? If his guess was right and Dong Yang’s space led him to the forest at the back of Nanshan Estate, it would be a long walk before he could get home.
It was better to be practical. A sling-style baby bag made much more sense.
Then it was time to fill the bag.
There were a few sets of disposable diapers in the right size, two baby bottles he wasn’t sure he could use, a change of clothes, shoes, blankets, a can of baby formula he also wasn’t sure could use, a bottle of purified water, baby wipes, two cloth toys, a changing mat and after thinking of Da Long’s teeth, he added in a baby teether and two pacifiers.
Being a parent was hard. Just finding those items took a long time, and Xu Feng wasn’t sure if he’d left anything out.
He sat down for a break after rushing around like a chicken who’d lost its head. The seat in the grass was good enough for watching the two babies. He sat with a silly smile on his face when his eyes grew rounder. He forgot the apple sauce! What if they woke up and were ravenous again?
Xu Feng added six cups of apple sauce to the overfilled bag, and two cleaned-up baby spoons. Just as he was about to crumple back to the floor, he thought better of it. What if something else were to happen that he couldn’t handle by himself?
What if one of the boys had diarrhea or started bleeding or the apple sauce wasn’t enough anymore, what would he do? Would he run through the Nanshan forest with them at the very last minute?
Xu Feng began rummaging around once more, this time he was looking for the cloth baby carriers. After finding what he was looking for, he took the time to learn how to tie it securely. First, he tried it with the lighter Xiao Long, and it took him some time to tie the baby to his back.
Next, tying Da Long to his front with the second baby carrier was much easier. He looked at the already put-together stroller and sighed. It would be nice, but not practical for a trip down a mountain.
With his babies strapped to his body, Xu Feng felt strange, but giddy. He was about to try to enter Dong Yang’s space, maybe he would try saying abracadabra, but then he remembered he wanted to give the old snake some wine.
The old snake was technically his snake, but it felt strange. The two lifetimes overlapped in his mind, but was it the same for Dong Yang? Had he always known who Xu Feng was?
Whether it was Dong Yang or Xuan Yang, both were always hard for him to get a pulse on. Their thoughts seemed to be 100 steps ahead of his own. And they were both petty...
But Dong Yang had taught him how to cultivate in this life. He wouldn’t—probably—have done that with some stranger.
As Xu Feng walked back over to the area where the wine jars were stacked, the pile of treasure that kept catching his eye finally hooked him over. This was a substantial amount of treasure, and it wasn’t here before.
It should be something Xu Zeng brought in... so it should also be Xu Zeng who popped the children into the space. This seemed like a no-brainer conclusion, but the treasure was still a nice clue that his brother left them.
Did Xu Zeng know something? If he did, he would have told Xuan Jian and Xuan Yang... there was no use speculating. It was better to get home and put everyone’s mind to rest, including his own.
Xu Feng couldn’t help but pick up two gold coins and pop them in the baby bag to his side. Then when he thought he was going home, he remembered he should have some gifts to give...
He went over to the only gifts he’d prepared and suddenly felt that it was shabby. His thoughts hadn’t been on shopping for anyone other than the children, and now he felt like he was a bad husband, brother, and friend.
He took the keychains into the baby bag, and by the way added a few more handfuls of baby toys, until the bag was bulging.
He really had a serious problem that needed to be addressed. Were there therapists for hoarders in Donghua? What about all of Dongzhou?
Who would help him with this hoarding problem?
