The Ger's Contract Marriage [BL] -
Chapter 519: Kindred
Chapter 519: Kindred
The line moved much faster than Xu Feng had expected. Either that or the flood of new information had put him in a strange mental space, distracting him from what was happening around him.
The tears that had started flowing so unexpectedly had stopped just as quickly.
Maybe it was the pregnancy hormones still lingering in his system. After all, he had been pregnant. He had given birth. Seeing these two children—twins, no less—brought back memories he didn’t have of his own.
Though Mingjun and Mingyue weren’t quite dragons like him, they were the closest thing this world had to dragons. The sight of them stirred something deep inside him and the tears had flowed in response.
He wasn’t a crybaby. Promise.
The tears wouldn’t get him back to his children any faster. And these two boys weren’t his sons. Xu Feng dried his eyes, allowing Yujie to continue talking about her children. There seemed to be less and less walls between these strangers.
One benefit of his emotional outburst was that it had flustered Yujie, a woman who otherwise seemed unshakeable. Xu Feng found that kind of cute.
As Yujie spoke, Xu Feng learned that Mingjun and Mingyue were, in many ways, too pure for this dimension. Not a saintly kind of pure—well maybe, but that wasn’t his place to judge—more like they were too pure of bloodline.
They were Dragonborn, descendants of dragons, though unlike Xu Feng, they couldn’t fully transform into dragons—even in a higher plane with all necessary conditions met. At least, not yet.
They would need to awaken their bloodline further, as would all the Dragonborn in this world, in order to fully embrace their heritage. Still, they enjoyed many benefits from their lineage, similar to the immortal bloodline carriers in Dongzhou.
This heritage made the Feng family especially "lucky" when the apocalypse came. Mingjun had awakened fire abilities, while Mingyue wielded thunder. Their mother,Yujie, was a wind ability user. All three with way above-average skill levels.
Together, they were a family of three ability users, and from the way they moved about outside the safety of the bases, it was clear they knew how to handle themselves. They were well-versed in using their abilities against both zombies and humans, a necessity in the current world.
If they weren’t, there was no way they would be here today. With their eye-catching visuals, there was no in-between, if they weren’t strong they would be weak—easy targets for others to either cherish or abuse.
Xu Feng had always thought of himself as a protector, but now he wondered if he had been wrong all along. Yujie’s family didn’t need protection. In fact, compared to them, maybe he was the one in need of help. After all, he was the one who had burst into tears out of nowhere.
To top it all off, Yujie and her sons weren’t traveling aimlessly. Yujie was actively gathering items of power—artifacts from a time when this world was rich in energy, or perhaps from higher dimensions—so that she could strengthen her sons.
She was preparing them to ascend, to leave this world behind and live in a higher dimension. This world wasn’t enough to raise healthy dragon cubs and she was doing what was needed to raise her children to reach their fullest potential.
"I don’t want to leave Mom," Mingyue said, his small voice filled with worry. Mingjun, just serious as always, nodded in agreement.
"Mom doesn’t want to leave you either," Yujie replied with a sad smile. "That’s why we have to work hard, so we can grow together."
Xu Feng sighed deeply. It really was fate.
He had crossed paths with Dragonborn, not just any Dragonborn, but a family with the same goal as him—to leave this world. The only difference was that he planned to leave as soon as possible, while they were working to get strong enough to survive in another world.
His last bit of defensiveness had crumbled long ago, and he found himself pouring his heart out to Yujie. Well, maybe not his whole heart. Old habits die hard—once a paranoid dragon, always a paranoid dragon.
There was no point in hiding the fact that he was Dragonborn himself, though he was more than just a bloodline carrier—he was a full dragon. The children had sensed that he had offspring of his own, so no use hiding that either.
Yujie had been so open about her knowledge of other worlds and her desire to leave, so why shouldn’t he share that he was just passing through from one of those worlds?
Xu Feng shared much, though not everything, and to his surprise, Yujie and her sons didn’t seem frightened by his secrets. If anything, they seemed excited.
Before they reached the wall of Aran Base, Xu Feng laid out his immediate goals. He had come to Aran Base for a reason—just like Yujie and her family were searching for objects of power, he was hunting for crystal nuclei and supplies for his own family.
"I want to play with the babies!" Mingyue exclaimed, his face lighting up with joy.
"I can help change diapers," Mingjun added, clearly eager to show that he wouldn’t just play with the babies. "I help with the babies at home."
Yujie chuckled, her dimples deepening as she laughed at her boys’ enthusiasm. "They really do help with the younger children back at our base," she said.
But her expression soon shifted back to seriousness as they wrapped up their conversation. "Crystal nuclei are important to us too," Yujie explained. "If we can get our hands on wind, fire, thunder, water, and metal nuclei, maybe we could work together? I can help you locate what you need for your children."
Xu Feng could see that Yujie was offering to go out of her way to help him. While working together would certainly help them gather more nuclei, her family of three clearly didn’t need his help—they were more than capable of gathering what they needed on their own.
"Wait," Xu Feng said, a thought occurring to him. "Can you only absorb the nuclei that match your abilities?"
Yujie nodded, not noticing the puzzled expression on Xu Feng’s face. Xu Feng, however, could absorb any type of nucleus like it was candy. This was not normal, and it was finally starting to dawn on him.
"We’re next in line," Yujie said, her voice lowering. "You’ve never been inside a base before, have you?" She didn’t wait for an answer, already knowing the truth. Xu Feng was too soft, too trusting to have survived long in this world.
"Try not to say too much when we reach the gate. I’ll give the guards some chocolate and cigarettes as a bribe, and we should get in quickly."
True to her word, it was finally their turn, and it wasn’t even noon yet. The line to enter Aran Base had been long, but it was because a zombie wave was expected to hit the area in the coming week.
Feng Yujie planned to be in and out of the base before that happened, returning to her home base with her sons. Xu Feng had the same goal.
He had no intention of lingering in Aran Base, or anywhere else for that matter. Lingering needlessly wasn’t something he had ever done, and he wasn’t about to start now.
