Chapter 447: All Three Together?
Chapter 447: All Three Together?
Xu Zeng felt a twinge—a teeny tiny bit— of confusion at the news that there were no available rooms in the entire town. An entire town?
It seemed improbable, yet his weariness overshadowed any further interest in the matter. They just needed somewhere to lay their heads, that was easy enough.
"How many rooms do we need?" His inquiry slipped out almost automatically, though he felt incredulous even as drowsiness simmered over him and his senses seemed far away.
Three fingers raised by the fox beside him prompted a raise of Xu Zeng’s brows. ’Three rooms?’ He thought. ’Why would they need three separate rooms?’
The notion seemed excessive to him. He didn’t even get a room growing up— well, that wasn’t completely true.
He recalled his humble upbringing, where even a corner in the pig house had been enough after his dad’s passing.
It was only recently in the other world and then now in Nanshan that Xu Zeng had a room and a bed, and they were all for him. Still, he wasn’t above sleeping on the floor.
"Do they have two rooms?" he inquired further, feeling the need to stretch his stiffened limbs after the long journey. He’d been in one position for too long and was sore.
Beside him, Bai Mo’s tense expression was hard to ignore and didn’t go unnoticed. His pout was evident, his grip on the bench white-knuckled with strain.
Xu Zeng paused, observing the subtle cues with a mixture of curiosity and confusion. What could be troubling the fox?
"You don’t agree with Xu Hu Zhe do you?" Bai Mo asked clearly unhappy with something. "I can’t agree, I know I have no official status in your heart, but if you must share a room with someone, I think— I believe it should be me!"
"That’s inappropriate. " A voice came from the carriage door a second before the door was opened.
Xu Hu Zhe’s constipated expression as he opened the carriage door caught Xu Zeng off guard. The urge to laugh bubbled within him, but it quickly dissipated as both men fixed him with strange stares.
What had he done now to earn their trouble? He’d been sleeping just a moment ago, and if it was because of the rooms, he didn’t mind sleeping on the floor. That was an easy fix, no?
Xu Zeng remained clueless, his thoughts drifting in a detached haze.
As Bai Mo voiced his concerns about the impropriety of a man and a ger sharing a room, Xu Zeng struggled to comprehend the gravity of the situation.
He was a man too. Well he wasn’t one at the moment, but he would be one again eventually, that body was much more comfortable and had fewer restrictions.
The argument between Bai Mo and Xu Hu Zhe unfolded like a two way barrage, each citing reasons why they believed it inappropriate for the other to bunk with Xu Zeng.
All between the red fox, now sitting at the edge of his seat and the masked snake standing in the doorway with his hair covering some of what peaked through the mask.
But Xu Zeng remained a bit lost, unable to grasp the nuances of their debate— none of it seemed important. Especially not enough to have a disagreement over.
If they were upset because he was no longer in his male body, he could come to terms with their reasoning. He was now his ger form, so he would abide by social norms.
When he finally spoke up, his words were laden with innocence. "Bai Mo and I are both gers—" he began, only to be interrupted by Xu Hu Zhe’s sharp retort.
"Gers who share kisses shouldn’t be sharing a bed," Xu Hu Zhe interjected, his words cutting through the air with accusation. Bai Mo’s face flushed crimson, his embarrassment was obvious.
Okay, they had shared a kiss, what of it? He could sleep on the floor if that made both parties feel better. It wasn’t a big deal for Xu Zeng in the least.
"How did you know?" Bai Mo’s confusion echoed in the small space, yet it was Xu Zeng who took the reins of the conversation, oblivious to the tension mounting around him.
"Why can’t we share a room after kissing? I’ve tasted your kisses too," Xu Zeng remarked casually, oblivious to the bombshell he had just dropped.
Bai Mo’s shock was evident as he shifted his gaze between Xu Hu Zhe and Xu Zeng. Xu Hu Zhe’s face had a small flush that could be seen even around his mask, but the small smile growing on his face was also unmistakable.
Did he enjoy others knowing about what they did behind closed doors? Xu Zeng had always believed the other was a simple and discreet man. There were always those who like to show off their partners, even in the village, but it was never anything so big.
It would be by giving their partners gifts, or letting them make decisions in the family, or even allowing their wives to sit with them when entertaining guests instead of hiding in the back rooms.
Did Xu Hu Zhe have this disposition? Was showing off kisses a thing townspeople did? Xu Zeng was taking note. This was what Xu Hu Zhe liked, but Bai Mo didn’t like it at all.
He would remember for the future.
"If that’s the case, why don’t we share one room? I am willing to sleep on the floor," Xu Zeng suggested, his logic simplistic and earnest. In his mind, accommodating both Bai Mo and Xu Hu Zhe in a single room seemed like the most sensible solution.
Xu Hu Zhe and Bai Mo were of different genders, but they could sleep on different beds. He was a man and a ger, so he would be the glue to keep them together, and he would sleep on the floor so no one’s honor was compromised.
As for his nephews, they took up little space and came with their own sleeping quarters. They could go wherever he went.
This was a fair arrangement. Very fair for all involved. After all, safety and practicality were his primary concerns.
The solution was clear cut— find a place to rest their heads and move forward. Time waited for no man, and the dusk was fast approaching.
"Agreed."
"O..Okay." Bai Mo seemed hesitant, but he wouldn’t back down now. Xu Hu Zhe agreed so easily and Xu Zeng was the one who proposed the idea.
"I’ll book a room in the last inn. Prepare to depart, but leave your things, I’ll carry them into our room."
That was it. It was such a simple solution, yet the two were arguing over a non issue. Xu Zeng smirked at the cuteness of the two.
They were both town dwellers their entire lives, while they were of vastly different backgrounds, they should have known he would take care of them. It was such a small thing to sleep on the floor for him. He wouldn’t let either be met with such discomfort while he was around.
Xu Zeng smiled at the ger whose face was still red, how cute, before he began to gather what he would need for a night.
Xu Hu Zhe took one more glance into the carriage before shutting the door and heading back to the Inn, he had a room to book. For some reason even after such an embarrassing conversation, there was a little pep in his step.
"The person you wanted to be mates with," Bai Mo was obviously choosing his words very carefully, his hands running through his hair haphazardly. "No." He stopped himself for the second time instead of going back to gathering his belongings for the night.
"Okay, Xu Zeng," He called out more confidently this time, demanding the silver haired ger’s attentions. "I need to know. How did Xu Hu Zhe know...know that...know we..."
Xu Zeng simply paused his task and took a seat across from the clearly frustrated ger. He wasn’t in a rush, he was a bit hungry, but it was nothing he couldn’t withstand.
With the extra attention Xu Zeng gave him, Bai Mo seemed to find the confidence to continue. "How did Xu Hu Zhe know that we kissed?" It had only been one time. Bai Mo’s second kiss in his entire 19 years of life and the best one by far.
How had Xu Hu Zhe known there was a kiss in the first place. Wasn’t he driving the carriage at the time? What he didn’t expect was the answer was so straight forward.
"He could hear us."
"Hear us?"
Xu Zeng just nodded. It was the truth, what else did he need to add to that statement?
Bai Mo seemed to be in a bit of shock, his face hadn’t changed, only confusion was painted across the lines etched between his brows.
"Is he the one you want to be mates with? The one that wouldn’t agree to be with you?"
Xu Zeng nodded simply. It was true, Xu Hu Zhe had changed his mind, but that was a new development.
