Chapter 443: Someone in the Distance
There wasn’t anyone at the edge of the forest where the carriage had come to a stop. Well, there was no one other than the three adults and two eggs, but that wasn’t always the case.
It was clear that the animals in the area had cleared out. Why had they cleared out? There was a human or an apex predator there sometime earlier.
The scent was still fresh, and for someone with a stronger nose, they might be able to track the person who was keeping tabs on their leisurely moving carriage.
For Xu Zeng that was a skill he didn’t currently have. He had a strong scenting ability thanks to being a demon beast, but he had his limits. Not all demon beasts were created equal. His skills were skewed toward... toward... something else.
He couldn’t help but roll his eyes again, what exactly was he good at? He wasn’t a warrior like Xuan Jian, and he wasn’t nearly as talented with plants as Xu Feng.
He was a hard worker... but he wasn’t as dedicated as Xu Hu Zhe... If he was, maybe life in Sun Village would have been easier.
"I can smell someone." Bai Mo added from the open carriage door, "It’s definitely a man."
Xu Zeng wasn’t sure when the carriage door had opened, but Bai Mo had found a way to listen to his words and rebel all at the same time. He couldn’t help but grin at the clever fox.
Bai Mo was staying close to his nephews, and at the same time making sure Xu Zeng and Xu Hu Zhe were okay. Bai Mo was very caring and nurturing, and also sweet and tasty.
Xu Hu Zhe called out before moving into the forest stealthily. "Stay close to the carriage."
Someone was tracking them, but who knew for how long. It was also possible the man just happened to be in the area.
"Don’t be afraid," Xu Zeng wanted to reassure the other ger. Bai Mo had clearly lived a sheltered life from his perspective. Even this journey to his village was way off the beaten track.
"I’m not." Bai Mo played with the doorway, "But it doesn’t seem like anyone who was following us before. The smell is different. Less fresh, more stale."
Stale? What was that supposed to mean?
No more than half of an incense stick, and Xu Hu Zhe was back. No one was found in the area closest to them, although he didn’t go far.
There were tracks in the forest, but nothing along the pathway (alongside the forest) they were using. The person should be someone who knows the area well, not someone from the Xuan family.
It was likely just a hunter or someone who preferred to live closer to the wilderness.
As the small conversation between Bai Mo and Xu Hu Zhe continued, Xu Zeng felt like he was too paranoid. Maybe his time in the other world had affected him?
This world was in peacetime, although it was a precarious one, war wasn’t imminent. There were several bandits and large more well known bandit groups, but what were the chances of being targeted in their unassuming carriage?
They hadn’t even been traveling for a day yet, their luck wasn’t that bad.
"We’ve lost some time with this stop." Xu Hu Zhe said aloud and Xu Zeng continued in his head, ’And with the unsteady pacing.’
He could complain about the bumpy ride during his make out session with Bai Mo, but he couldn’t help with leading the horses. This wasn’t a skill he had, and honestly, animals didn’t like him very much.
Other than the silly puppy at home. That thought put a small smile on his face. But still, it was best not to pretend he was capable of leading the horses when he couldn’t.
They needed to rely on Xu Hu Zhe for this task. If he’d gone on his own, Xu Zeng planned to hire a carriage and coachman for the entire trip. With his nephews in tow, it was better to make the first leg of the trip with only people they trusted.
They had plans to hire another carriage with a coachman from Aran Town and leave this carriage in the care of the rental company until the last leg of their return journey home.
All this planning and plotting was very troublesome in Xu Zeng’s opinion.
He was glad to have Xuan Jian and his men’s support in the planning of the trip and accounting for their safety. He wasn’t above admitting he was a simple man for the most part.
The only thing that had interested him in his short life was the technology of the other world, hunting—mostly to protect himself in the other world, and kissing—this was a relatively new interest.
It was like he was content with being ordinary, and staying away from others until his bloodline was awakened and he and his brother switched worlds.
Now everything had changed, and they couldn’t go back in time. He found things that excited him to no end, and this body with its strange desires was also unleashed to its fullest.
Xu Zeng was content with letting the two take charge. Bai Mo was clearly a good leader, and Xu Hu Zhe was trustworthy and dedicated—his driving skills earlier were likely just a fluke.
"We’ve lost time. If we go directly to Aran Town and skip the other planned stops, will we be able to leave before sunset?" Bai Mo asked. Xu Zeng wasn’t sure what else they’d discussed while he thought, but he was tuned in now.
"We should be able to reach Aran Town tonight if we skip Han and Ahan. We’ll make do with the prepackaged snacks we have and stay in Aran Town tonight."
The names of the towns were all foreign to Xu Zeng. He saw the same map, Xuan Jian shared with all of them, but nothing had really registered.
Whatever they agreed to, he didn’t care so long as they made it to and from Sun Village in one piece.
