Chapter 408: Kidnapping is Pretty Common
In the stillness of the room, Xuan Jian’s words pierced the silence like a sharp knife cutting through butter. The children love my brother-in-law. Thank you for your care."
It was a simple statement, yet the emotions it conveyed were deep.
For a fleeting moment, the icy exterior that had encased Xuan Jian’s heart seemed to thaw, revealing glimpses of the warmth and vulnerability hidden beneath.
It was only temporary. Just as soon as the words were released, his walls were back in place—the walls he built kept him from falling apart.
Xu Zeng replied curtly, but the ’my’ didn’t escape his notice. For someone who seemed to block out social cues unintentionally, the emotions the dragon, no, his brother in law, gave him a glimpse at, touched his heart.
"It’s my duty to my brother."
Another lull settled over the room, but this time, it was tinged with a faint undercurrent of warmth.
The table was full of men who spoke few words, with the exception of Bai Mo. He wasn’t talkative—well, maybe when Xu Feng riled him up—but he wasn’t quiet either.
The fragrant aroma of Xu Feng’s carefully curated blend of tea serving as a bittersweet reminder of the absent master of Nanshan Estate.
Now was as good a time as any. Xu Zeng took a small breath before reaching up to take off his mask. He hadn’t planned on showing this face to Jie and Bo, but it wasn’t a risk.
The two men were clearly loyal.
With his fingers gripping the edge of the white mask, like the tolling of a distant bell, another inevitable announcement shattered the calm.
Xu Zeng’s declaration hung in the air like a heavy cloud, casting a shadow over the gathered company.
...And he didn’t even wait his turn!
"I need to return to the Xuan main residence," he stated, his words weighted with a sense of finality. "I’m not sure how long I’ll be gone."
Xuan Jian’s gaze flickered to his lover’s brother, searching for any hint of emotion behind the impassive mask that obscured his features.
The absence of Xu Zeng’s usual expressions—which were pretty expressionless to begin with—only heightened the dramatic moment!
Because, drama...
For all present—even Bai Mo who was more in the dark than the rest of the group—they caught the meaning of the unspoken words.
Both Xuan Jian and Xuan Yang would need to be away from the Eggs. Eggs that didn’t have a dad, would now have no parent to nurture them.
With no parents, they would need to rely on Xu Zeng to watch over and nurture Da Long and Xiao Long.
It wasn’t a necessity.
Many eggs were abandoned by their parents and could still hatch with minimal care. Children were even known to hatch after being thrown away in alleyways or even in the wilderness.
Some children’s will to live—and likely their bloodline potential—was too strong to be extinguished because of a lack of extra care.
Besides, Da Long and Xiao Long were abnormal little eggs. Exhibit A, they weren’t little eggs!
Exhibit B, they were clever enough at only two months old to outsmart several adults!
Exhibit C, they clearly understood human speech... while still in their shells! What type of two month old was that clever?
They were practically overdeveloped at this point. Still, how would Xuan Jian bear to leave them alone with no one to send them energy and nurture them?
In his heart, Xu Feng’s children, their children deserved all the love. They deserved as much opportunity as could be provided for them.
He didn’t want to slack on the duties of a father—papa!—but he couldn’t leave his lover in Jinghua any longer.
As for Bai Mo, he wasn’t sure exactly what was wrong with the Xuan family, but Xu Feng had no love for them, and that was all he needed to know.
If Xuan Yang chose not to tell them about his children with his legal spouse—not even his own mother knew—then the Bai Master would support this decision as best as he could.
It wasn’t what was done in their society. This wasn’t being filial in the least, and something about it bothered the ger, but it wasn’t his decision to make.
Bai Mo wouldn’t keep anything from his dad or his father. They loved him with all their hearts, but he wasn’t Da Long or Xiao Long’s parent or even their guardian.
His main duty as a friend of their dad was to spoil them and make sure they weren’t hurt. That was doable without him meddling in Xuan Jian and Xuan Yang’s affairs.
Plus, there was clearly more to the story that a relative outsider like Bai Mo, wouldn’t know. That in itself was more than enough reason not to inform the Xuan clan of the two obviously talented descendants.
The newly awakened immortal bloodline descendant had only left Yilin town for over two months before Xu Feng gave birth.
Even if he got pregnant early in his marriage, Xu Feng should’ve still had a few months—one or two—before he was due. The numbers weren’t fully adding up.
It was possible, but more impossible than possible.
Bai Mo had finally been taken semi seriously in Jinghua by some elders of the Deng and Bai families, but that was likely because they wanted to keep a line open in case he had other treasures to offer them. Still, he knew that his distant family were all snakes.
Well, they were foxes, but you get it, they were cunning!
’It seems like the big families of Jinghua like to kidnap their descendants.’ This thought made Bai Mo smile a bit, but it was a sad smile.
The Bai family tried to keep him in the capital after he showed some potential, and now Xuan Yang’s family had him on some sort of house arrest.
The fox eared ger couldn’t help but shake his head, before catching himself. ’Can’t ruin the moment!’
He took a quick glance around the room before he let out the held breath. No one noticed his little inner monologue! Good!
