The Ger's Contract Marriage [BL] -
Chapter 398: Lee Hua
Chapter 398: Lee Hua
Grace be damned! Bai Mo was now suddenly on high alert.
He wasn’t expecting this turn of events. From scared to sully Xu Zeng’s honor to trying to defend his honor in a heartbeat. It was a change like night and day.
Bai Mo couldn’t believe he hadn’t noticed it before. He had been visiting Nanshan estate almost every day since his return to Yilin, yet somehow he had failed to see what was right in front of him: Midwife Lee’s blatant attempts at flirting with Xu Zeng.
The realization hit him like a ton of bricks, leaving him feeling foolish and more than a little annoyed. How could he have been so blind to the midwife’s intentions? It was clear as day now—Midwife Lee wasn’t interested in Bai Mo at all; he was fully interested in Xu Zeng.
As he observed the scene unfolding before him, Bai Mo couldn’t help but feel a surge of irritation towards Midwife Lee.
The man seemed completely oblivious to the fact that Xu Zeng was now a bit shorter as he sat down, his attention focused solely on the silver haired ger’s covered profile.
And even if Midwife Lee had noticed the height difference, who would believe that a man could transform into a ger in the span of a day? Well, apparently Bai Mo had, and now he was left to deal with the consequences of this new situation.
But why was Bai Mo so certain that Midwife Lee was flirting with Xu Zeng?
Even after catching them holding hands in a compromising position, the midwife hadn’t excused himself from the room.
Instead, he had simply picked up the basket he had dropped and launched into conversation with Xu Zeng, completely ignoring Bai Mo’s presence other than a respectful nod.
It was clear to Bai Mo that Midwife Lee had ulterior motives for being here. Why else would he have come to the small reception room without his children, leaving them to wait by the entrance to the hall?
Lee Hua had simply placated Xiao An after she called out to her dad, and asked to stay with her brother as he delivered his goods.
"Sorry for the disruption Master Zeng," The Midwife began, completely ignoring Bai Mo once again.
"I went to the back fields behind the estate with the children and Gou San," Midwife Lee seemed to emphasize the dog that Xu Zeng liked the most, as if trying to get an in with the dog!
"I picked some flowers to brighten up the master’s quarters. The one’s Master Zeng liked the most when we went for a walk with the children."
As Midwife Lee spoke, Bai Mo couldn’t shake the feeling that he was trying to impress Xu Zeng. And then there was the way Midwife Lee’s eyes lingered on Xu Zeng, his gaze openly prying and intrusive.
It was clear that he was trying to establish a connection with the silver haired man (ger), using any means necessary—even Gou San wasn’t spared, in an attempt to curry favor.
Bai Mo was shocked silly. Were people always this bold? Was he the only one who behaved restrainedly?
Well, he wasn’t exactly being restrained at the moment. He was still holding one of Xu Zeng’s hands and actively blocking his sight from the ger in front of them.
It was only after Xu Zeng started moving his free hand to wipe at his face that the rusty robot that was Bai Mo began to creak back to life and his fox instincts began to whirl into motion.
If he had a tail it would no doubt be swaying rhythmically to the same beat his fox ears were now following.
Bai Mo realized that he couldn’t just stand by and let Midwife Lee’s advances go unchallenged. It was clear that Xu Zeng was dismissive of the midwife’s attention—he was generally dismissive unless it involved his favorite people.
"Midwife Lee can leave the flowers over there," Bai Mo said firmly, freeing one hand to point to a corner far from them. "It is nearly dinner time; Xu Zeng will take a look at them later. Thank you for bringing my Xu Zeng such a thoughtful gift."
Midwife Lee froze in place, his expression unreadable, before his lips tightened and his fingers gripped the basket tightly in return. The sudden silence in the room was deafening, the only sound being the subtle tension between them.
"Please make good use of the flowers, Master Zeng," Midwife Lee finally spoke, his voice strained. "Your brother also liked flowers, so I hope they will bring a smile to your face in his honor."
Bai Mo observed the exchange with a mixture of concern and suspicion. It seemed Midwife Lee knew how to manipulate Xu Zeng’s emotions, even using the memory of his late brother to his advantage.
Bai Mo could see Xu Zeng’s face clearly, and a small wistful smile graced it. This Midwife Lee was skilled. "I will, thank you."
Xu Zeng’s response was brief but polite, and Midwife Lee seemed satisfied as he quickly left the basket aside and made his way back to his children.
As Bai Mo watched Midwife Lee’s departure, he couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that settled in the pit of his stomach.
He had done some research on Midwife Lee and had talked with Xuan Jian about the new additions to Nanshan Estate, but this encounter was still unsettling.
Midwife Lee was a village ger with some experience working with large families, but there was something about his behavior that didn’t sit right with Bai Mo. It wasn’t uncommon for servants to try to gain favor with their masters, but Bai Mo couldn’t help but feel that Midwife Lee’s intentions were encroaching on his territory.
It wasn’t abnormal for servants to try to enter a master’s bed. It made more sense for a widow without a solid form of employment to try to solidify their standing in the estate.
Xu Feng had hired him, but now the ger had passed away. The other two masters of the estate, Xuan Jian and Xuan Yang, were completely off limits, but Xu Zeng was fair game. There were no rules in place for this master.
