Chapter 260: Beyond the Walls
Chapter 260: Beyond the Walls
The entrance to the agricultural research facility loomed large, designed to accommodate the easy passage of several large lorries side by side.
Even if Xu Feng had entertained the idea of leaving through the main gate, multiple layers of chains, coupled with winding vines that served as a potential warning, would have deterred him. These additional security measures were unmistakably Xu Zeng’s handiwork.
f the vines hadn’t given it away for Xu Feng, the brand new chains against a well taken care of, but still aged industrial gate, would have clued him in. The security measures were new, and likely Xu Zeng’s additions.
After a cautious inspection of the compound, it became evident that the entire area had undergone a thorough cleanup. While not every corner was put to use, the sheer size of the space made it impossible for one person to fully utilize. Still, it appeared secure.
Three smaller exits, designed for foot traffic, each secured in the same manner as the main gates, offered alternative paths out of the compound. Two pedestrian entrances flanked the main gate—one positioned adjacent to it and the other at the back of the compound. The third exit, adjacent to the greenhouse and storage building, remained inconspicuous and appeared seldom used, if ever.
Instead of opting for the pedestrian entrances, Xu Feng gravitated toward the smaller gate. He hovered there momentarily, shifting his weight between his feet, contemplating whether he truly wanted to venture into this unsafe world.
He didn’t need to do so, but he felt a sense of obligation. This was a world he and his brother were tied to because of him. His newfound sibling had volunteered to hold down the fort in this zombie infested realm while he enjoyed the company of his lovers and played his role in the backyard intrigues of another world.
He shouldn’t allow his younger brother to shoulder the burden alone. He shouldn’t hide behind his little brother completely.
"Haaah," With a deep breath, Xu Feng readjusted the mostly empty bag on his back. It held a half filled water bottle, a few biscuits, a small medical kit, and additional seeds as a contingency.
His abilities were not primarily offensive, making him better suited for a support role, especially within a team. Still, he was prepared to defend himself with a sturdy metal baseball bat.
Lucky for him, he didn’t need to use a plain stick, in one corner of Xu Zeng’s closet, there were a few simple weapons to choose from—metal and wood baseball bats, lead pipes, and a machete—the machete was the coolest, but Xu Feng felt most assured with the metal baseball bat.
Xu Feng had grown stronger over time, thanks to his cultivation. While he might not have started with the same physical prowess as Xuan Jian and Xuan Yang, his strength rivaled that of a physically fit human man. As a ger, he had the physical power to match, and with continued cultivation, his strength had only grown.
His uneasiness was not about his ability to handle zombies or other humans; rather, it stemmed from concerns about germs and infections.
He was too much of a clean freak for this kind of life.
As he exited the research facility, he maintained vigilance, ensuring that no one observed him and that there were no lurking zombies nearby.
He had deliberately left the gate unlocked from the outside, making it appear secure yet easy to enter. Undoing the tangle of chains he’d set up would take considerable time, which worked to his advantage.
As an extra precaution, Xu Feng germinated a few seeds in front of the gate. While it wouldn’t deter a determined intruder, it would provide an early warning if Xu Zeng’s base was compromised.
Standing just a foot away from the gate, his heart pounded within his chest. He may not have been an avid gamer, but in this moment, he couldn’t help but think that more gaming experience might have come in handy.
The research facility was situated in an isolated location, surrounded by other buildings that appeared to be related to the complex but lacked the security of the compound’s walls. Even though Xu Zeng had tidied up these supplementary structures, there was no guarantee they were devoid of people, animals, or the undead.
There were four buildings in total, the tallest being only two stories high. Xu Feng’s destination was the nearest of these structures, still a quarter of a mile away. Initially, the distance didn’t seem too daunting, but in the eerie silence of the afternoon, punctuated by bursts of noise, it took on an ominous quality.
Despite the unsettling feeling, Xu Feng pressed on, quick but cautious with his target firmly in mind.
Just before reaching the building’s entrance, he spotted a couple of zombies giving chase to a speeding car in the distance.
Xu Feng watched in astonishment as the man’s angry shouts filled the air, echoing and breaking the eerie silence of the desolate landscape. The betrayal and desperation in the man’s voice were intense, a ruthless reminder of the cruel survival instincts that had taken hold in this world.
The zombies, drawn by the commotion, turned their attention toward the discarded man. Their relentless pursuit was persistent, and it was clear that the odds were stacked against him. Xu Feng clenched his metal baseball bat, torn between the desire to help and the instinct for self preservation.
As he continued to observe the unfolding drama, Xu Feng couldn’t shake the feeling that he was an outsider in this world, a newcomer who had stumbled into a realm where every action carried life or death consequences. His heart ached for the man facing the horde of zombies, but he couldn’t ignore the risks involved in intervening.
The man’s curses grew louder, each word filled with anger and betrayal. Even with the distance, Xu Feng could hear the deep voice as it spewed curses at the "mother fu**ers" who had backstabbed him.
Xu Feng finally got his wits back, after shaking his head.
