The room was dimly lit by the pale moonlight filtering through the dusty windows. The closet light was now off, and a small piece of the window was left un-shuttered.

Xu Feng lay on the bed, his body aching from the day’s labor, and his mind grappling with the uncertainty of his situation. He’d spent around three hours cleaning up the greenhouse the first time, over an hour resting and circulating his energy, then more than six hours cleaning up the greenhouse, the second time.

He was so tired that he almost expected to sleep through the night undisturbed, although a small glimmer of hope lingered in the back of his mind that he might find his way back to Donghua.

However, that hope was frail, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that he wouldn’t return until he had completed the greenhouse. Perhaps it was his sheer determination or an unyielding stubbornness that anchored him to this world.

As he drifted into the realm of dreams, he was unprepared for what awaited him there. The several hours, he had spent time cleaning the greenhouse and then attempting to return to the vitality of the once barren space wasn’t a waste to him. However, the fatigue had weighed heavily on him, and his sleep was like the dead that ran rampant in Dongmen.

In the dream, the transition was seamless. He wasn’t teleported back to Nanshan or anywhere in Donghua, as he had come to expect. Instead, he found himself in that mysterious space where he could occasionally see Xu Zeng.

It was a place that defied the boundaries of reality, a fertile land reminiscent of an immortal’s paradise, similar to the Xuan ancestor’s space but more ethereal and abundant. Majestic mountains soared into the azure sky, while vast seas stretched out to the horizon. Lush greenery painted the landscape, and the air was imbued with an indescribable serenity and overpowering yet subtle energy.

To Xu Feng’s astonishment, he was not alone in this otherworldly space. Standing there in the flesh—although flesh might not have been the best description—was none other than Xu Zeng himself. It should have been an awkward reunion, given their shared experiences and the undeniable strangeness of their connection.

Yet, it felt entirely normal and right. There was no tension or unease between them, only a great sense of calm that washed over Xu Feng.

It was a different kind of peace from what he experienced with Xuan Jian and Xuan Yang, but equally weighty and liberating. In Xu Zeng’s presence, the weight of the world seemed to lift, and for a moment, all of the uncertainties and hardships that had pursued Xu Feng faded into the background.

He felt safe.

The weird nature of their appearances did not escape Xu Feng’s notice. He reached up to touch his own hair, finding it had returned to the long silver strands he was accustomed to in Donghua.

This unexpected transformation should have signaled a return to his usual appearance, but there was something profoundly strange about the situation.

As for Xu Zeng, he bore an exact resemblance to the man Xu Feng had glimpsed in the reflection in the Dongmen dormitory building. Xu Zeng gave off an aura of calmness, and the two of them stood there in silence, observing each other with an almost substantial serenity.

The silence lingered, broken only by the sound of Xu Feng’s sigh, which seemed to emerge unexpectedly loud and clear. His annoyance was unignorable as he questioned, "This again..." It was a complaint that slipped from his lips without warning.

The realization hit him like a thunderbolt—there was sound. His own voice had echoed in the space between them. Panic and confusion gripped his mind as he struggled with this newfound revelation. Could Xu Zeng hear him? The mere thought sent a shiver of excitement down Xu Feng’s spine.

For all their previous encounters in this ethereal realm, they had been silent observers, unable to communicate or interact. But today was different. Something had changed, something big, and it left Xu Feng with millions and millions of questions swirling in his mind.

Was it because they had returned to their original worlds, or was there some other mysterious force at play?

As fear and confusion gripped Xu Feng, he contemplated the possibility of being isolated in the zombie infested world, separated from his loved ones in Donghua. What would he do without Xuan Jian and Xuan Yang?

Even if he found a friend with benefits relationship in Dongmen, it couldn’t be the same. There were feelings involved now...

The weight of his emotions pressed down on him, and he felt a rush of helplessness and anxiety flood his senses. The realization of what he could lose was overwhelming.

In response, Xu Zeng, the taller and calmer figure in this surreal space, offered comfort in the simplest yet most profound way. He moved closer to Xu Feng, wrapping his arms around him in a tender embrace.

It was an act of reassurance that transcended words, a silent promise that everything would be alright.

Xu Feng, tears now streaming down his cheeks, melted into the warmth and comfort of Xu Zeng’s hug. The smell of the other man, the sense of familiarity, felt like home, a sanctuary from the chaos and uncertainty that had surrounded them.

It had surrounded them from the beginning.

To Xu Zeng, Xu Feng had said two words, seemed scared, then scared, then tears began to well up in his eyes over a 10 second period at most. It happened fast, but he immediately stepped up

Their time together passed in a blur, with Xu Zeng offering soothing words of comfort as they lay on the grass, gazing up at the cloudless sky. The world around them seemed to fade away as they basked in each other’s company.

Breaking the peaceful silence, Xu Feng’s voice quivered as he asked the question that weighed heavily on his mind. "So, are we switching back for good this time?" His eyes were red, and his voice betrayed his emotions, making it difficult to meet Xu Zeng’s gaze.

He still needed to know if this strange journey was coming to an end.
