Chapter 230: Red Tape

As Xu Feng and his entourage approached the grand government building of Yilin Town, the majesty of the structure couldn’t be denied. It stood tall and imposing, its intricate architecture showcasing the craftsmanship of ancient times.

The imposing edifice was adorned with intricate carvings and intricate designs that seemed to tell stories of the ages. Xu Feng hadn’t been back to this building since the Xuicai exam two weeks prior.

In fact, he hadn’t been back to Yilin Town at all in the last two weeks. Despite the disagreements with Xuan Yang and Xuan Jian, Xu Feng still listened to them in this. Xuan Yang had handled his ’striping’ incident, and he could at least do this.

In the bustling courtyard outside the building, Yamen officials moved with a leisurely grace, their long robes flowing as they went about their duties. The atmosphere was calm, and most of the government workers appeared relaxed and reserved in their familiar surroundings.

However, the tranquility of the scene shifted abruptly as the group led by Xu Feng made their entrance. The moment they stepped into the courtyard, the gazes of officials and passersby turned towards them. It was as if a ripple of curiosity and intrigue had spread through the crowd.

Xu Feng was the center of attention, a striking androgynous beauty with shimmering silver hair that cascaded like a waterfall down his back. His ethereal appearance was a clear indicator of his rare and coveted immortal bloodline lineage.

His height, taller than most gers who typically displayed a more effeminate appearance, only added to his imposing presence. There, at the center of his forehead, was an extremely deep red mole, a symbol of fertility, and a mark of distinction that drew further admiration.

Despite his impressive beauty, Xu Feng’s tall and commanding stature gave him a distinctly masculine aura. Yet, the allure of his beauty was undeniable, and many onlookers couldn’t help but gaze at him longingly as he moved with grace and poise.

Dressed in finely woven silk robes adorned with neutral yet intricate designs, Xu Feng exuded an air of elegance that stood out even by Yilin City’s standards. His delicate, pierced ears served as a reminder of his marital status, yet, admirers couldn’t help but be captivated by his allure.

Walking just behind Xu Feng, Xu Si and Xu San were moving with pride at their young mistress turned young master. Xu Feng had transformed in only one winter, and so had his family—the three other Xu family members from the Nanshan estate.

Xu Hu Zhe, in particular, stood out due to his height, which rivaled that of Xuan Yang and Xuan Jian. His towering presence demanded attention, and his impressive stature turned heads as they passed.

Trailing along the back of the collection, Xuan Jian, the iceberg of the group, exuded an aura of handsome coldness and intimidation. His martial arts background was evident in his attire—fine robes that highlighted his clean and composed appearance.

Though his muscles were not overtly visible, his aura alone was enough to deter Xu Feng’s admirers and draw the gaze of both women and gers along the street. He was the heartthrob Xu Feng had fallen in lust with nearly five months prior.

In contrast, Xuan Yang possessed the aura of a scholarly figure, his pure and gentle appearance seemingly at odds with his icy demeanor. Handsome and refined, he gave off an air of calmness that deterred any who were hooked by his looks.

Together, they were an unforgettable sight, a group of confident people whose presence demanded attention and respect as they made their way into the government building, turning heads and leaving an unforgettable impression on those who crossed their path.

Xu Feng felt the power of pretty privilege in full effect, the group of handsome men behind him, and well taken care of young ladies had benefits. As soon as they spoke to someone, they were taken seriously.

This treatment was as different as night and day to Xu Feng. When he had gone to the bookstore with Xu Hu Zhe in tow, the bookstore assistant hadn’t taken him seriously at all.

With a change in attire—a more clean and refined look—and perhaps a more confident outlook, the process was relatively smooth from start to finish.

Inside the government building’s grand reception hall, Xu Feng and his entourage faced a slight holdup in the processing of their documents. A government official, adorned in a robe of rich colors and embroidered patterns, was addressing Xu Feng with the utmost respect.

Xu Si, Xu San, and Xu Hu Zhe stood silently behind their master, their expressions a mix of curiosity and hesitation.

However, as time passed, Xu Feng began to feel increasingly uncomfortable under the intense glares of two lurking figures in the hall. Xuan Jian and Xuan Yang, detached from the main group, watched like vigilant guardians.

Their presence, though unspoken, was enough to deter those who dared to approach Xu Feng with anything less than honorable intentions.

Xu Feng felt like some damsel in distress, but he could be flexible with his partners. They had all taken a step back to compromise. Although the lurking felt too much, he could admit he had a knack for attracting unwanted trouble.

Sensing the tension building around him, Xu Feng decided to employ his tried and true method—acting cute. Well, it wasn’t actually tried and true, but it had worked well enough.

With a subtle pout and a batting of his long, light lashes, the two men had agreed to stay a distance behind his group. This level of lurking he would need to deal with.

Without much effort, Xu Feng caught the government official’s attention and offered a charming smile, his silver hair cascading like a waterfall.

"Ah, sir, my brother, Xu Zeng is currently ill, but I still want to make sure he is added to my family register fully," Xu Feng began in his most endearing tone, his voice a bit softer than usual. "Xu Zeng, isn’t here at the moment, and our three loyal companions here—Xu Si, Xu San, and Xu Hu Zhe—were formerly slaves, but now they are family."

The government official blinked, somewhat taken aback by Xu Feng’s charisma and persuasive manner. However, bureaucratic red tape was not easily undone, even by the charms of a beauty.

"Master Xu Feng, we must adhere to the established procedures," the official replied, his tone apologetic but firm. "Without the presence of your ’brother’ and a certain duration of time between slave status and free status, it may not be possible to expedite their status as your official inheritors."
