Chapter 187: Stay For Dinner

Chapter 187: Stay For Dinner

Who were the Bai family of Jinghua?

One of the two most powerful fox families in the entirety of Dongzhou—the other was the Deng family. Yes, there were some small clans and lone fox beasts who were descended from the original fox immortal beast, that was still in existence.

It was even possible that these lone beasts and smaller families might have a descendant with strong blood. Stronger than anyone currently in the Bai or Deng families.

But even if this was true, that lucky person wouldn’t have much.

On the bright side, the future of the politics in the capital, those with strong bloodlines were sought after and had bright futures. But, on the dark side, if you weren’t a member of one of the original immortal beast families, or without one of the noble families to support and nurture a talent, one could only get so far.

Xu Feng understood this dynamic. It was common in dramas, novels, and even in real life. Having connections could get you farther than not.

But in Jinghua this "dynamic" took a different turn.

Yes, the bloodline carriers were getting stronger in recent years.

Yes, the bloodline families, and nobles with no bloodline descendants were looking to take in young immortal bloodline carriers with talent and strong blood.

Yes, it was a status symbol, but there was something more.

Even Bai Mo could feel there was something more that he wasn’t privy to because of his previous lack of immortal blood.

Why were powerful families and nobles obsessed with breeding strong children? Xu Feng hadn’t discussed this with Bai Mo, but the Xuan’s also seemed to be obsessed with having descendants with strong bloodlines.

These were strong families that could stand tall on their own even without some fox ears and silver hair to give them some extra clout.

It was an unspoken concern between Bai Mo and Xu Feng, and it was another reason Xu Feng was worried about sending Bai Mo to the main Bai family. Would they force him to marry someone with strong blood now that he was no longer a waste?

Xu Feng had a lot to worry about, and he was already good at finding new things to worry about each day. What he wasn’t expecting was for Bai Mo to not even be allowed to return to the main Bai residence in Jinghua.

"They refused?"

"They refused."

"They said, you’re not allowed to return to the Bai residence in Jinghua?"

"Not allowed."

...

"I think they’re afraid my bad luck will affect their chances of having a healthy strong blooded baby this year. Most people other than you, think I’m bad luck to be around."

Xu Feng was still a bit shocked, but Bai Mo continued. "The three remaining animal groups are each fighting to have a child like Xuan Yang. Even other snake clans want to beat out the Xuan family and have the strongest bloodline child."

Xu Feng nodded, "Even within the Xuan family, they should want to replace Xuan Yang with someone easier to control."

At that, Bai Mo glanced at Xu Feng’s belly before his frown deepened.

"I don’t want you to go to the Bai family. Something more than what we know is going on." Bai Mo nodded at Xu Feng, it was clear to him too, something was going on, and it didn’t just begin. It was going on even when his parents were alive.

"If I don’t go, we can’t get the fox inheritance."

"That doesn’t matter, Momo." Xu Feng wasn’t power hungry, at most, after his contract was complete, he would need to keep a low profile.

Even if the fox inheritance from the Bai or Deng families were enough to help them fill in the missing pieces, it wasn’t a strong enough reason for Xu Feng. It would only put them, or at least Bai Mo, on people’s radars.

Bai Mo probably wouldn’t have cared to go back if it weren’t for Xu Feng, but now he was convinced of his decision. For someone so sweet, he was so stubborn.

He sat with a troubled expression etched deeply on his face, his eyes clouded with worry instead of their usual mischief. His pout was no longer a playful expression but rather a sign of genuine concern.

The furrow in his brow seemed to deepen with each passing moment, and his usually cheerful demeanor had faded into a solemn demeanor. Xu Feng could sense the unease radiating from his friend, a stark departure from their usual banter.

The concern that lingered beneath the surface, causing a shadow to cast over his usual vibrancy. It was a heart clenching sight.

Without approving or denying the other’s decision, Xu Feng simply took a deep breath in, then out. Bai Mo was an adult, older than him in this life, and he couldn’t make decisions for the other ger. The only thing he could do, was be there to support his friend.

"So, what have you decided to do and how can I help you?"

As Xu Feng offered his support, Bai Mo’s expression shifted like a sudden breeze lifting the heaviness off his shoulders. The troubled furrow in his brow smoothed out, and a glimmer of relief danced in his eyes, replacing the prior worry.

His pout, softened into a faint smile, radiating gratitude. The atmosphere around them seemed to transform, shedding the weight of anxiety that had lingered moments before. The tension dissolved, and a renewed sense of ease settled between them, Bai Mo was visibly reassured by Xu Feng’s understanding and support.

"I came to pick up the Chrysanthemum tea and the preserved Dragon Chrysanthemums," Bai Mo said this cautiously as if looking for the other man’s backing, but fully convinced of his stance. He was committed to this course of action.

"You’re going to Jinghua? Even without an invitation?"

"Yes."

...

The silence between the two didn’t last for too long, but it made Bai Mo squirm the entire time, his ears constantly moving about.

"Okay. I have a request. Will you listen to it?"

Bai Mo nodded immediately. He nodded his head with such enthusiasm, it seemed as if his neck had turned into a floppy ragdoll. Each nod was enthusiastic and exaggerated, his fox ears bobbing in agreement, adding an extra touch of charm.

"Don’t show them your ears, only your eyes."

The thoughts easily played across Momo’s face, not because he was so open or innocent. The other man was a fox who was growing more and more cunning by the day. But even so, he clearly trusted Xu Feng, and let down his guard.

The twitching of the other’s fox ears while in thought was so cute, Xu Feng couldn’t keep a serious face any longer, his lips quirking upward.

"Deal, but I get to stay for a meal."

"Agreed, you can stay for two and sleep over tonight."
