Chapter 172: Treasure Talk
In the vastness beyond the towering wall, the mountains seemed to unfurl like a secret map beckoning Xu Feng. A treasure trove crafted solely for him, an added benefit given to him on his arrival in this new world.
It held secrets, some small, some grand, a piece of hidden riches yet to be uncovered. The Dragon Chrysanthemum flowers brought back by Xuan Jian, while a prized possession to the people of Donghua, paled in comparison to the other concealed wonders nestled in Xu Feng’s own backyard.
The mountains called to him, their attraction magnified as spring’s vibrant pulse coursed through the air. What was once a faint murmur during the winter months had blossomed into a booming melody, a captivating invitation that pulled at his very soul, like an infectious tune that refused to be silenced.
It was like a viral song playing on repeat in his head. Annoying but addictive.
Before the burning sensation during the Xuicai exam, the ring hanging from his neck and grazing his chest had been silent through the winter, but for the second time in a handful of days, the ring warmed.
It glowed with a foreboding warmth. The sensation, though uncomfortable, spoke volumes, sparking questions that lingered in Xu Feng’s mind like uninvited guests. ’Why was the ring burning now? Why had it reacted during the exam?’
These were questions he couldn’t and maybe didn’t want answers to. Still, he stayed staring off into the mountains. The ring did what he didn’t, it returned the call to the things calling to Xu Feng from the depths of the Nanshan mountains.
The ring continued to warm, at first it was comforting. Xu Feng hadn’t taken an overcoat when going to see Doctor Ping, it was spring, but he was still underdressed.
The warmth penetrated his bones with a deep warmth, chasing the bone chilling winds away. The cold that had slowly and unknowingly settled in his frame, ran from his body like they were being chased by a devil.
It wasn’t until the warmth turned from welcoming to painful that Xu Feng turned away from the mountains. The searing pain lasted until he made his way from the back of the estate back to the front.
During his escape, the master of the estate continued to survey his home, passing by the servants’ quarter, main reception halls, kitchen and even the small artificial body of water at the head of the estate.
It wasn’t until he found himself at the areas set aside for the estate’s animals that he came to a stop. Xu Feng had met and asked Si and San not to follow him while still in Blooming Courtyard, but he only now came across Erlang.
The boy stood with the horses in the enclosure built just for the horses. The estate had three horses. The two beautiful stallions with similar shiny black coats were Xuan Yang’s and Xuan Jian’s personal horses. There was also a third less remarkable horse.
It was still beautiful in Xu Feng’s unexpert opinion, with a beautiful brown coat and a health frame that showed it was well cared for. This horse was mainly used for the carriage, as it was much faster than the old ox that used to pull the ox cart.
The old ox was still used to pull the ox cart when the servants went into town or to Nanshan village for any reason.
The horses were oddly still as if in the presence of a general or some respected superior, standing at attention as they received pampering pets from Erlang. It was obvious he was here just to dote on the horses as he had an absent minded look on his face.
It was weird, this was not a normal sight, and Xu Feng knew this, but it wasn’t the first time he’d seen this scene. The horses, in fact, all animals seemed to react to Erlang in this way. It was something Xu Feng saw too often.
It still puzzled him, but the reaction of the animals to Erlang wasn’t as disturbing or annoying as the animals’ reaction to Xu Feng himself. They were still respectful, obedient, and relatively docile since they hadn’t noticed Xu Feng’s presence yet, but as soon as they did they would react differently.
Xu Feng loved animals, they were so cute and loveable, but since his transmigration, in his presence, they always tried to get away, as if he was the scourge of the earth. It was ok if he was in a carriage or ox cart, the animals would ignore him, but stay on their best behavior as if he was some kind of devil.
It wasn’t like this in his original world...Although he didn’t really remember getting close to any animals back then. Even on his grandma’s farm, he never remembered chasing a chicken or duck or even petting a cat or dog.
...
Xuan Yang and Xuan Jian’s horses were more tolerant of his presence, but it was obvious they preferred it when he wasn’t around. They would act normally if their masters, Xuan Yang and Xuan Jian, were present, but when Xu Feng came to love on the stallions on his own, they would retreat from him.
Thinking about his unfortunate predicament with animals, Xu Feng sighed, it must have something to do with his strong immortal blood. Maybe normal animals felt threatened by him?
"Master Feng." Erlang greeted him after being alerted by the pain filled sigh.
On cue, the brown mare moved back, its legs shaking as if the devil had arrived, too scared to neigh, it only retreated into its stall at a break neck pace. The two stallions, looked to Xu Feng as if showing acknowledgment, but still distanced themselves from him, moving deeper into their stalls as well.
"Sigh," Xu Feng sighed again, even in his last life he wasn’t cruel to animals. Why did they need to treat him like some animal abuser?
It wasn’t his fault he had strong immortal blood flowing through his veins. It wasn’t like he was physically overpowered like Xuan Yang and Xuan Jian, he was only good at getting horny, and occasionally suppressing other humans around him.
