The Ger's Contract Marriage [BL]
Chapter 138: New Plan

Chapter 138: New Plan

The Bai family of Yilin town retained its second class status out of convenience for the town. It was the only second class family based in Yilin. Bai Mo the only remaining member of the family, was considered a harbinger of death and a source of bad luck who killed his parents. His wealth and family lineage were still intact, but he lacked a firm support system in Yilin.

The only classmate who would occasionally talk to him in the last three years was Sun Ming, but it had always been apparent that his brother, Sun Ming Hua, didn’t like the older ger, and viewed Bai Mo as a rival rather than a friend of his older brother.

Under normal circumstances, the Sun family, a third rate family, should want to curry favor with Bai Mo, but things had changed dramatically in the last three years.

Bai Mo hoped the younger ger’s animosity toward him could be curbed and not redirected at Xu Feng. While Sun Ming Hua didn’t like him, his older brother, Sun Ming, was still considered an acquaintance. The Sun’s couldn’t afford to offend the Xuan family in earnest.

Even in disguise, Sun Ming Hua had managed to uncover and target Xu Feng, escalating the tensions in the exam courtyard. The more common clothing Xu Feng wore, the dyed brown hair, and the dulled red mole, seemed too simple of a cloak for Sun Ming Hua.

Xu Feng’s measured response reverberated through the room, challenging the baseless accusations with a firm stand. "I won’t admit to something I haven’t done. If you have evidence, present it. Accusations without proof are baseless."

The room hushed at Xu Feng’s direct words. Even Ming Hua, who expected a different reaction, was taken aback. Xu Feng was too direct.

Shouldn’t he try to curry favor with the proctors or at least be respectful? Only those from second rate families like Bai Mo’s or even third rate families like Sun Ming Hua’s should have the audacity.

How could a nameless ger find the courage to speak up to Senior Xiao Pei. Even older takers (repeat test takers, taking the primary exam past their teens) who were clearly several times Xiao Pei’s age still treated the lead proctor with the utmost respect.

Xiao Pei sighed inwardly. The weight of the decision rested on his shoulders, and the consequences could ripple through the town.

For now, he wanted to let the exam continue to keep pace with the men taking the same exam in the next building. The final transcription of the exam questions answered throughout the day, couldn’t be skipped. The accused ger and Sun Ming Hua, who were both staring at him with deep concentration, weren’t making this easy.

As if Xu Feng could read his mind, the tall ger stood up from his seat. All eyes that weren’t already on him quickly took in his figure in the natural lighting. At this time Xiao Pei was standing between both Sun Ming Hua and Xu Feng, a few feet away from either of the two standing gers.

The contrast between the two gers was unignorable. Petite to statuesque, and composed to agitated.

Xiao Pei looked up at the accused ger and felt a sense of discomfort again, like alarm bells going off in his head. Fighting the urge to physically shake his head to dispel the foreboding feeling, Xiao Pei fought to make eye contact with Xu Feng who was staring intently into Sun Ming Hua’s eyes.

The junior proctor from earlier came to Xiao Pei’s rescue unknowingly, "If you didn’t cheat, then how did you know that second young master Sun was referring to you earlier?" The junior proctor seemed a bit smug like he had come to the most logical conclusion with a world of proof.

Xu Feng looked at the man and barely kept from rolling his eyes. "I was only skipping a step and getting to the target." It was clear who Sun Ming Hua was pointing at after a few moments. And then to top it all off, he was called "ugly." If Xu Feng had a bar of gold for every time, he heard that word, he would be several bars of gold richer.

He was considered ugly because of his height; he’d already accepted this fact.

At this, the junior proctor’s face flushed a bit, but he wasn’t the only one. Several seated gers had flushed faces, not because they had seen some great beauty, but because of how calmly Xu Feng had admitted to being the "ugly" ger in question.

Even if one was ugly, shouldn’t they at least try to save face?

"But he is ugly" added a ger farther away with seemingly a subjective point of view. A few heads turned quickly locating the voice in the crowd. Xu Feng however was ready to be done with the farce.

Being ugly was better than being a cheater.

"Everyone knows you’re an admirer of second young master Sun," someone replied to the commenter and the boy flushed averting his eyes but not withdrawing his words.

The proctor seemed annoyed by the situation after realizing this could take longer than he thought.

"Why was I accused of cheating? I will prove my innocence so the exam can continue." Xu Feng then looked at the crowd slowly as if he empathized with them more than his own reputation, "My fellow gers have studied for so long for this exam, we can’t waste this chance to become scholars."

In one hit, Xu Feng had received approving nods from several test takers and proctors as well. Everyone wanted to get this day over with.

Several eyes looked over at Sun Ming Hua as if looking at an enemy. It was this ger who disrupted the exam, and no proof at all, only an accusation. They were losing precious time they could be writing with, because of such a ger.

He was from a good family, but wasn’t wearing so many golden ornaments to a scholar’s exam in poor taste?

Feeling all the eyes in the room on him, for once Sun Ming Hua wasn’t happy. It wasn’t just jealousy at his beauty, or even appreciation, these two looks he was used to and even enjoyed.

At that moment, it felt like too many eyes had turned into daggers aiming at his soft spots.
