The Ger's Contract Marriage [BL] -
Chapter 137: Admit You’re Wrong
Chapter 137: Admit You’re Wrong
"Ahem," the lead proctor cleared his throat trying to give himself some time to think things through.
Ming Hua who had transformed from a teary eyed innocent was still glaring at Bai Mo with unrestrained distaste. It was clear there was something between them, and Xiao Pei, the lead proctor, would need to tread carefully.
After taking in the scene of the two gers from well known families he couldn’t afford to offend, Xiao Pei glanced over at the taller ger.
The ger looked nondescript during the exam, with fine but appropriate clothing and 3D features, but nothing too exceptional if you weren’t staring at him for too long. Now that Xiao Pei was really examining the other ger, there was nothing average about him.
From his relaxed confidence to the sharp, intelligent glint in his eyes, the ger just seemed a little out of place. Even in a situation as terrifying as this, he seemed worried, but not panicked with his reputation on the line.
For a student who didn’t come from a major family, the difference in having a title like Xuicai could completely change one’s life. And one’s reputation was always of the greatest importance for a ger, especially a married ger who had to answer to their husband’s family.
This tall ger looked like someone who couldn’t or maybe shouldn’t be ignored. Xiao Pei felt the situation had already spiraled out of control. He was hoping the exam would be a quick and easy appointment, and he would gain a bit of status after the test but he had somehow found himself in the crossfire between two wealthy families and a wild card.
The Sun family was much smaller when it came to power and influence than the Bai family and previously couldn’t compare. But Xiao Pei knew that the Sun family could no longer be dismissed.
The oldest son of the family, Sun Ming, Ming Hua’s older brother was a dark horse who recently got betrothed and was constantly achieving scholarly merit for his family one step at a time. He was the top scorer in the exam for Xuicai only two years ago, and would be testing for the title of Juren in the fall, the same title Xiao Pei currently held.
The Bai family had more weight and resources but was declining, with only Bai Mo as the last of kin with no marriage prospects in sight. The Sun family had better future prospects and their future descendants might be entering the realm of immortal blood carriers in the near future.
Xiao Pei wished he could do more than clear his throat in the charged silence. He initially wanted to end things quickly and curry favor with Sun Ming Hua, but things had escalated too far. Many gers of good standing were in the courtyard, and their words today would travel far.
As the lead proctor, Xiao Pei had sworn to uphold the justice of the king and ensure a fair test for all test takers. He should aim to make things fair.
After looking back and forth between the three Gers, Sun Ming Hua, Bai Mo, and Xu Feng—the unknown brown haired ger who was trying to be inconspicuous—ignoring the shaken expressions of the bystanders, Xiao Pei had come to a decision.
Xu Feng maintained his outwardly calm attitude despite the seriousness of the situation. He met Xiao Pei’s gaze with a steady one. The accusation weighed heavy on him, but he refused to let it ruffle him.
A guilty person would be nervous, but even those who weren’t guilty would still have a strong reaction to such an accusation. Yet Xu Feng sat calmly with slightly raised brows.
Xiao Pei couldn’t help but wonder what this gers relationship with Bai Mo was?
"Admit your wrong doing, and this one will not take this matter further, you’ll only be asked to leave and if you can get another senior to recommend you, you may take the exam next spring."
The room wasn’t too packed. Combining all the participants from the surrounding villages and the town, the total gers taking the exam was less than 100, closer to 60 or 70.
Xu Feng didn’t care too much for face initially but even in disguise, he was still the Xuan family’s young mistress in name, and his real name was used to register for the exam.
Even if he could sully the Xuan family, he didn’t want to embarrass Xuan Yang after all his efforts to get him the needed recommendations for the exam.
As Xiao Pei issued the ultimatum, Xu Feng felt a flicker of annoyance. Admitting wrongdoing would save face for the Sun family, but that would be a lie and hold no benefit for him, the Xuan family or Bai Mo.
He looked from the serious lead proctor to the angry Bai Mo. The young ger with a love for justice, had completely disregarded his social standing and put his reputation on the line without knowing if Xu Feng was in the wrong or not.
Xu Feng’s gaze attracted Bai Mo’s eyes from the proctor. With a reassuring nod from, Xu Feng, he found himself relaxing, the two fists at his side unclenching as he released the building tension.
Bai Mo was still annoyed by this outburst from Sun Ming Hua, and Senior Xiao Pei’s slight bias, people tended to curry favor with those who had standing but it was too much...
Wait! Bai Mo knew exactly what Xu Feng’s standing was, and he was married to a prominent family from the capital, the Xuan family. But Senior Xiao Pei might not know that....
With this realization, it was Bai Mo who had a pitiful face for both Sun Ming Hua and Xiao Pei. There was no way Xu Feng would cheat, he was confident in this. And if Xu Feng wanted to make trouble for both men, not even a single proctor in this courtyard could get away unscathed.
The Xuan family wasn’t a small family, while it was also in decline like most immortal bloodline families, it was still considered a first class family.
Sun Ming Hua was bent on making enemies with the wrong person this time. If Xiao Pei was lucky, he would choose to be fair and bypass this storm.
