Chapter 125: The Gers Happy Place Pt.2

Xu Feng felt completely at home in this ancient greenhouse, even though it was currently lacking greenery. The space had an undeniable charm and beauty, despite its somewhat questionable functionality.

Built with sturdy lumber and mostly situated underground, only the top portion was visible above the ground, made of ancient style window paper, acting as a rustic substitute for modern greenhouse glass.

As he stood in the dimly lit space, the potential and possibilities seemed to stretch out before him. The worries and uncertainties that had clouded his mind over the past few weeks faded into obscurity, as though the events of the recent past were nothing more than distant memories.

The lantern at Xu Feng’s feet provided the only source of light in the greenhouse. He meticulously examined each plot, located in every corner of the space, with a smaller central plot at the heart of the structure.

Currently, this central plot remained empty, as Xu Feng focused his attention on the larger plots situated at each cardinal direction.

The well-tilled and meticulously prepared soil in each of these four plots already had seeds sown in them.

The empty spaces around the plots held heating equipment, ensuring the temperature remained stable in the underground greenhouse. A small body of water completed the picture, contributing to the harmonious environment and temperature stability, despite the lack of greenery for the moment.

Thermodynamics.

The thermodynamics at play in the greenhouse would become a vital part of Xu Feng’s efforts to cultivate his seeds successfully after his trial period. It would also be his cover if needed.

The ancient greenhouse, with its clever design and the use of traditional materials like wooden beams and window paper, allows Xu Feng to create a microenvironment that supports plant growth during the harsh winter months.

In the daytime, sunlight filters through the window paper, warming the interior of the greenhouse. The plants and the soil within absorb this heat, storing it as thermal energy. The greenhouse acts like a giant solar collector, harnessing the sun’s energy to create a more temperate climate within its walls.

This solar heating not only provides warmth but also helps maintain a stable temperature that is ideal for seed germination and growth.

To control overheating in warmer months, Xu Feng would use some of the age-old methods of ventilation and shading. He has installed vents and shades to regulate the internal temperature, ensuring that it doesn’t become too hot.

These mechanisms are key to balancing the greenhouse’s thermodynamics, preventing any extremes that could harm the plants.

Additionally, Xu Feng makes use of water features within the greenhouse. He has a small body of water that acts as a heat reservoir. During the day, this water absorbs excess heat, and at night, it releases it slowly, preventing drastic temperature drops that could harm the plants.

Moreover, regular watering of the plants increases the humidity in the greenhouse, helping to further moderate temperature fluctuations.

The greenhouse’s thermodynamics represent a blend of ancient wisdom and modern knowledge, a fusion of the old and the new.

Xu Feng couldn’t help but appreciate the advantages of his new reality.

Even if he hadn’t met his premature end during the apocalypse, his basic knowledge of planting and agriculture, including principles like using water to stabilize greenhouse temperatures, made him prepared (enough) to survive in this ancient world.

In this time, he was more focused on cultivating a life for himself rather than becoming a business mogul. While he lacked the skills for big business, he still had an edge that many others in this era couldn’t boast: his future knowledge and experience.

With a sense of purpose, Xu Feng carefully examined each section of the greenhouse. The plots were well-prepared and filled with potential, even though they currently lay barren.

He could feel the energy just below the surface as the seeds readied themselves to become seedlings. Some could already be considered seedlings!

In the first section, they had planted a variety of seeds from the bean, squash, and eggplant categories from the seeds Xu Feng had presoaked.

The second contained seeds from the tomato and cucumber group which were also treated.

The third section featured seeds for lettuce, spinach, and peppers. The peppers would take longer to grow without Xu Feng’s assistance, but they paired well with lettuce and spinach and would help each other grow.

The final section held the promise of cabbage, bok choy, and radishes. All the seeds Xu Feng had chosen were quick growers in modern times, with the exception of the peppers, and all had been carefully treated before they were moved to the cellar.

As he moved from plot to plot, a sense of anticipation filled the air. Xu Feng was about to breathe life into this underground world and, in turn, nurture the world within him.

The greenhouse was a place of transformation and growth, both for the seeds that would soon sprout and for Xu Feng himself as he continued on this new Chapter of his life.

Xu Feng felt a sense of satisfaction as he examined the onions, garlic, and scallions already sown on the periphery of each of the four sections.

The work might have seemed a bit crude compared to modern methods, but he couldn’t deny the care that had gone into the planting. The damp soil showed signs of recent attention, and Xu Feng was grateful for the effort put in by Erlang, Jie, and Bo.

He knew that many of the seeds were different from the modern versions he was familiar with, but that didn’t discourage him. The memories of his grandmother’s farming methods and the taste of fresh, nutrient dense produce fueled his determination.

His grandmother had always stressed the importance of using what nature provided to nurture the soil and create healthy, vigorous crops. While the locals might not appreciate these methods as much, Xu Feng was committed to bringing the best to his household.

She would prepare the soil with fertilizer or animal waste that had been mixed with composted leaves and other composted material from the neighboring forests and allowed to decompose for months in advance.

This was a good way to use what was available to them in nature and nurture healthy and nutrient dense foods. He had tasted foods cultivated on his grandmother’s farm, and food bought in their local grocery store in the city.

He could always taste the difference, and he would always want the best for his household.

The idea of being a "local tyrant" held a different meaning for him, it was about using his knowledge to improve the lives of those around him.
