Chapter 124: The Ger’s Happy Place Pt.1

Xu Feng, with a lantern in hand, made his way from the bustling kitchen to the back side of the tranquil courtyard. The walk wasn’t too far, but even with one of his padded jackets to protect against the cold, the chill of the early morning air would have still sent shivers down his spine.

In his haste to prepare breakfast after spending time searching for his precious 50 tael seeds, Xu Feng had settled for a simple yet good looking cloak that was included in his dowry.

It wasn’t as fancy as the fur coats he had received, so it was a better option to wear around the estate.

The cloak wasn’t as warm as his padded jacket, but it was much more exquisite. As he moved through the courtyard with grace, his form was adorned with the ethereal glow of what seemed to be luminescent pearls or tiny fairies guiding his path.

It was an otherworldly sight, a picture of unhuman beauty against the backdrop of the charming Blooming courtyard, which retained its enchanting allure even in the middle of winter. The beautiful courtyard had a timeless charm that made every season feel like a fairy tale.

Xu Feng moved gracefully, his silver hair shimmering in the soft lantern light, cascading down his back like a waterfall of moonlight. The gentle glow of the lantern bathed his features in an ethereal radiance, making him appear as if he were a celestial being descending from the heavens.

Xu Feng’s silver hair, unburdened and free, caught the lantern’s shimmering glow, creating an enchanting halo around his head. The cascading locks were an unconventional decision in Donghua.

In this era, updos were the norm for gers who married into families and women alike, who sought to display their social status. Yet for a modern man like Xu Feng, it was an unnecessary complication.

While Si had been an angel, assisting him with the difficulties of hairstyling during the Xuan family’s stay and his occasional outings to town, he much preferred the comfort of his hair flowing freely.

The lengthy strands didn’t bother him as much as the relentless headaches he’d suffered from having his hair tightly bound at the crown of his head.

As he stood there, peering down at the entrance to the semi underground greenhouse, Xu Feng felt a strange rush of excitement.

It was as if he were beginning on a secret adventure, a quest exclusively designed for him. The prospect of stepping into this hidden haven filled him with the same kind of joy he’d experienced as a child when all his dreams seemed within reach.

The anticipation in the air was intense, and even though he had a practical goal in mind—to check on his pre sectioned plots—the act of visiting his greenhouse felt like a magical journey into a world of endless possibilities.

Walking through the concealed below ground passage, Xu Feng was aware that the greenhouse was more of an aesthetic display than a practical garden.

The "windows," covered by traditional methods (rice paper) that let in limited natural light, weren’t sufficient for nurturing plants during the cold winter months.

He considered alternative materials to enhance light intake but realized that options like glass or plastic, so commonplace in his era, were beyond the technological reach of ancient Donghua. These resources hadn’t been invented yet, making them a scarce resource in this time and place.

As he stepped into the greenhouse, something amazing happened—his mind became a blank canvas, empty of the worries and worries that had troubled him. It was a welcome break, a mental pardon that allowed him to relax in the beauty and serenity of the space.

Xu Feng had always cherished the time he spent visiting his grandmother in the countryside, where he could freely roam around the family farm.

Unlike most children who played together, he preferred finding solitary spots within the sea of green and yellow fields to read or nap. Even after being shooed away from the farm, he’d locate a peaceful haven near the babbling creek or on the outskirts of the nearby forest.

Even in the bustling city, he opted for markets over department stores, just to immerse himself in the live plant sections. And in his leisure hours, he found any excuse to visit a park or be enveloped by the embrace of nature.

The greenhouse held the power to transport him back to those cherished moments of tranquility and connection with the natural world.

The quirk that had been Xu Feng’s childhood and early adulthood—a deep rooted love for nature and the outdoors—suddenly fell into place with his newfound wood ability. It became evident that he was, in essence, a nature enthusiast to the extreme.

And nature accepted him back in return.

To his pleasant surprise, when Xu Feng entered the greenhouse, he found it neither empty nor only freshly tilled, as he had instructed Erlang to do.

It was apparent that Erlang couldn’t read, so someone else must have assisted him in the task.

A memory from the day following his wedding rang a bell. On that day, Xu Feng had been busy rushing to prepare a meal with the help of Si, San, and they even had Xuan Yang and Xuan Jian as spectators.

In the middle the commotion, he’d heard noises coming from his greenhouse. In his hurry, he hadn’t investigated but had assumed it was Erlang working alone.

With the current revelation, it became evident who had aided in seeding the greenhouse. The only three people unaccounted for were Jie, Bo, and Erlang. The conclusion was clear; they must have worked together.

Xu Feng observed that the greenhouse was still divided into four separate corners like he had planned, and each was planted with different seeds.

He had taken care to label each section, corresponding to the seed bags stored in the adjacent cellar.

The structure itself was a marvel of wooden beams, its upper section covered with window paper to allow some natural light to seep into the space.

In the winter, small stoves provided the necessary warmth to maintain a suitable environment for the plants to thrive. Nearby water sources ensured that the plants were properly hydrated in the artificial heat in this underground oasis.
