Chapter 100: A Budding Scholar

Xu Feng hadn’t forgotten Xuan Yang’s question, and as soon as the auntie was gone, he answered the young master truthfully. He still had quite a few things he wanted to get while in town.

Si and San knew this would be a longer trip, and should have already prepared food for themselves and Bo. They were instructed to do the same for dinner.

Of course, Xu Feng hadn’t forgotten to promise the two little girls treats for their hard work in the mansion. San tried to act like snacks were above her, but the glee in her eyes couldn’t be hidden.

"There’s a few more places I’d like to go. I need a few more staple food items with longer shelf lives, I want to buy some ready made clothes and durable cloth for the new servants, and I want to visit some bookshops."

At this, Xuan Yang was fully interested in the topic again. "What type of books are you looking for?"

"Do you need more...," Xuan Jian paused, "educational materials?"

Xu Feng’s face reddened, before shooting a small glare at Xuan Jian. How was he considered a pervert when this man existed?

"I have a good number of educational materials, thank you, well..." Xu Feng tried to organize his words, "I would like to see if I can find more books on how men and women of immortal bloodlines react to gers of immortal bloodlines."

His last conversation with the two men wasn’t as insightful as he had hoped when it came to ABO information. Yes, those with strong immortal bloodlines had stronger libidos, but that didn’t explain the almost instant attraction to Xuan Jian or his sexual attraction to Xuan Yang.

Both reactions seemed more like reactions between Alphas and Omegas or even fated pairs in ABO stories. Not that he believed there was only one person for each person. There were many different "the ones" for everyone, but it seemed to be easier to be sure when you met a "the one" as an Alpha or Omega.

And it seemed like he was having strong unusual reactions to the two men.

Xuan Yang and Xuan Jian nodded, and with that, both men seemed to have a new respect for Xu Feng. They both enjoyed learning, one more than the other, and they excelled in different areas, but it was still a shared passion.

Xu Feng continued, not registering the new level he had reached. "I also want to take the imperial exams."

Xuan Yang and Xuan Jian both stayed silent, giving Xu Feng the chance to air out his thoughts.

"My dad spent a lot of time teaching me how to read and write and about the classics," this was true, and on top of the original owner’s teaching, he also had studied for years in the modern era, his adoptive parents would want him to finish his education.

"I don’t want a court position or anything like that, but..." Xu Feng seemed a little lost for words.

Gers were allowed to study in Donghua, and that wasn’t true throughout the entire continent. Even in web novels he’d read with gers and other third genders, they weren’t often allowed to study.

He didn’t want to miss this opportunity to stabilize himself. If he had the talent to become a scholar, it would be better for him when he pursued a household of his own after his divorce.

Seeing the slightly flustered ger, Xuan Yang uncharacteristically warmly replied with a smile. "If you have an interest, I can help you prepare for the spring exams."

"Spring exams?"

Xu Feng was aware of the three exams for Xuicai, Jinshi, and Juren. The imperial exams were a significant part of the civil service system in Donghua. The Xiucai was the entry-level exam, Jinshi the second level, and Juren the highest.

Passing the exams was considered prestigious and could lead to important government positions. However, Xu Feng didn’t want a court position, only a more respectable background in this new world. He would most likely farm the land and live scouring the mountains for new adventures.

"It’s not too late to apply for the Xiucai exam in the spring," Xuan Yang informed Xu Feng.

There were apparently separate accommodations for gers who chose to take the scholarly path. It was usually well to do gers from respectable families that would take the Xiucai exam and then prepare for marriage.

Anything further would usually be attempted by gers who chose to set up their own households to support their families with a respectable job.

Xu Feng was more than excited to take the Xiucai exams in the spring. Four months wasn’t a short time, but it wasn’t a long time. He might not be fully prepared to take such an important exam, but he would still try to get a feel for the exams.

Hearing about the separate testing site for gers and men was interesting. The site for gers was usually stricter than the men’s site, and the men’s site was notoriously strict. This was because there had been cases of sexual misconduct between gers during the examination.

So, maintaining the testing for gers was heavily debated. There were factions in court who opposed the chance for gers to become civil servants. It was in Xu Feng’s best interest to take the exams as soon as possible before the opportunity was gone.

Xuan Jian was also supportive of Xu Feng’s interest in becoming a scholar and quickly agreed to help in any way possible. He wasn’t a Juren like Xuan Yang, but he had achieved Xiucai easily. It was the Xuan family who didn’t want the servant to outshine the master.

Xuan Jian was okay with stopping his advance. He continued to study, but scholarly pursuits weren’t of much interest to him, and he knew Xuan Yang had no negative feelings about him.

Xu Feng was visibly excited at this turn of events. He didn’t know what he expected from the two men, but they constantly surprised him in the best way possible.

"You don’t need to help with my studies, just take me up the mountain with you."

If Xuan Yang could help him with his studies, and Xuan Jian would take him up the mountains, he would have an exciting enough winter and spring.
