The General's Wife Wants to Leave -
Chapter 84: A warm-hearted person
Chapter 84: A warm-hearted person
His wife was actually a warm-hearted person, as from his perspective, if she were a cold-hearted person, like how she had acted in front of him so far, the kids, who had no blood relationship with her, would not act this way toward her.
It was not a surprise to find that cold-characterized mothers were adored by their biological children. But for them to be adored by non-biological ones was a different case.
Thus, in Canillas’ eyes, no matter how hard the young woman sitting across from him tried to show him that she was a bad person, the way she treated the orphans had given him the most accurate answer.
This realization, although he had known that what she had shown him was only an act, made his heart unknowingly feel squeezed.
Why did she still act this way toward him?
The same questions always appeared in his mind every time he saw her push herself to be someone who was not the real her in front of him.
If only she accepted him as her husband and was willing to have children with him, there was no doubt that she would be a good and loving mother for their children. Although she was still young, he had witnessed how gentle and patient she looked after the kids.
It then made him wonder what their children would look like if she were willing to be the mother of his children. But he wished that if one day a miracle was bestowed upon him, with her willingness to accept him as her husband, it would be enough, regardless of boys or girls, if their children would take after her traits.
Beautiful dark hair. Beautiful, rare hazel eyes. Beautiful porcelain skin. Beautiful person.
And one more thing that he wanted his children to inherit from her. Her dimples.
He first realized that she had beautiful dimples when she stood among the wildflowers in the meadow when she talked and smiled to her maid, as it was the first time he saw her true figure more clearly.
A small smile of mixed feelings appeared on his face at the realization, and it was still there when he had his focus back on the beautiful young lady who was surrounded by the weeping kids.
Canillas watched his wife, who was busy coaxing the children, hugging the little girl who was crying in one arm and patting the back of another crying little girl with her other hand, while her lips were busy delivering a repeated ’It’s fine. Don’t cry’ in a hushed tone to a few kids around her.
And now he blamed himself for being childish, showing his possessiveness over his wife, which made her end up in a problematic situation.
The situation had made Mrs. Powel come to the rescue. She calmed the children and said, "Don’t cry. Archess Kingdom is not far from here. Lady Joanna will come to visit us like before."
"Can Lady Joanna not leave Terra?" asked Emma in her sobbing voice, tears drenching her chubby cheeks.
"Sorry, kid, but she can’t." Canillas tried to speak softer now, as if trying to subdue the cry of the little girl, helping to lighten the burden on his wife, who was surely unable to answer her. But it was definitely a failure, as Emma sobbed even more.
Finding the little girl weeping more, Canillas badmouthed himself for failing to lighten the burden on his wife.
"Then, Lady Joanna, can you not be his wife?" It was Denny who was questioning, throwing a glare through his eyes, whose rims were red, and pointing at the man who was sitting leisurely across from him.
Joanna’s lips opened and closed a few times, as she did not know what to say. She actually knew her answer, but again, what was the need to give her useless response?
"No, boy. She can’t. She will be my wife for the rest of her life," Canillas once again answered on behalf of his perplexed wife, smirking at the boy who was glaring at him with his nostrils flaring. His voice was less gentle compared to when he tried to soothe the little girl.
Now he admitted that he was not such a help for his wife regarding handling kids.
Canillas thought if one day he would have children with his wife, would they fight to get her affection? Canillas found the thought amusing, although it would make his wife get a headache.
When the room became more noisy as the children were crying and grumpy endlessly, Joanna finally said in a loud voice, "Everyone stop crying now, please!" Soon the dining room turned quiet, and only small sniffling sounds that could not be held down were heard.
"I will come to visit you all again, even if I happen to leave Terra. Because my home is here, Terra. So, no matter what happens to me, no matter how far I go, Terra will always be my home, so I will always return here. Do you understand?" And the kids offered a nod in unison after a few moments of silence, as if trying to digest what was said by the young lady to them.
"Good. So, now, finish your meal, and we will go play in the playground afterward. What do you say?" Joanna asked, and the kids once again answered in unison, "Yes, Lady Joanna." Their hoarse voice was a mixture of the aftermath of crying over a dramatic events.
With that, the kids were hurried back to their seats and finished their meals so that they could play with Lady Joanna, who would leave Terra with her husband.
Finding the room now calm, Joanna finally let out a sigh of relief.
Fixing her seat on the chair, she glared at the man in front of her, who seemed to be unaffected by the chaos he had caused.
At the glare that was offered by his wife, Canillas smiled and raised both of his hands as if telling her that he was the culprit and had surrendered.
After the dramatic breakfast, Joanna made her way to Liam’s room to examine his condition. She would leave the mountain the next day, and she still found her heart feeling heavy to leave the little boy no matter how much she tried to ease her mind.
Before an interruption appeared to disturb her last night when she was alone in her room, she was in deep thought about adopting Liam. But she knew that she could not do that, especially when she had not solved her problem with the General. Besides, she also doubted if the General would agree to her idea to adopt Liam.
Aside from that, she avoided making children in the orphanage feel sad and dejected if she took Liam as her child, not them. Therefore, she pushed aside the attempt to make Liam her child.
She had also made up her mind that it was the best decision to leave the mountain as soon as possible for the safety of the inhabitants of Powel Orphanage as well.
It had just appeared in her mind that the longer she stayed in the orphanage, those people might think that she had a close relationship with the people in the orphanage, which would then make those people use them as hostages to threaten her. Therefore, it was better to return to the duchy soon and asked her father to send a few Barasca knights to guard the orphanage and secure the forest.
