Chapter 114: The most beautiful lady
Her voice was as melodious and soft as the gentle breeze in a warm spring. A warm smile that had charmed so many eyes that landed on her flawless face was formed on her supple, round lips.
A few blonde strands that were freed from the loose bun danced on her blushed cheeks, following where the soft breeze brushed her face.
No wonder she was labeled the most beautiful lady, who had caused a rift among gentlemen in Barasca who had competed to have the enchanting blue eyes solely aimed at them.
Wherever Lady Clara appeared before one’s eyes, she would definitely get any attention from them. It was how Joanna depicted the beautiful young lady before her eyes who could captivate most of the gentlemen with her beauty.
Bringing her gaze to where the beautiful lady had her blue eyes laid, Joanna was taken aback when the green eyes that she had thought to meet the blue eyes sharply stared down at her.
Staring back at the green eyes that seemed to be piercing deeply into her soul, Joanna blinked her eyes and darted them away while trying hard to calm her palpitating heart.
As if not wanting to be caught off guard by what was surprisingly caught in her eyes, Joanna quickly regained her composure. With a smile on her face, Joanna braced herself to look back at the man, who still stood with such a facial expression that she could somehow grasp the meaning behind it.
Joanna then said, "This is Lady Clara de Lorn, the only daughter of the Marquess Marthin de Lorn." Moving her gaze from the cold, stony-faced man toward the lady who had just taken her seat, as if tired of waiting for her inquiry not to be ignored as before, Joanna continued to say,
"And I believe I don’t need to introduce General von Rodega to Lady Clara, as you said that you noticed that it was me just by looking at General von Rodega." And Joanna noticed the lady’s cheeks flushed even more at her words, while a sort of shy smile cracked on her lips as she cast her eyes downward.
Lady Clara then slowly nodded her head and said, "It is not hard to notice General von Rodega, even from afar." After stating that, she lifted her head to look at Joanna and hurriedly added,
"Please don’t be mistaken by what I said before, Lady Joanna. We all know how we, the Terran people, will always remember General von Rodega, who has contributed a lot to saving our land."
Upon seeing the flustered look before her, Joanna simply smiled and replied, "We all do, Lady Clara. There is nothing to be mistaken about that." Joanna reassured her.
For Joanna, what was shown by Lady Clara de Lorn was not something new that needed to be taken by surprise. Having bumped into her in every social gathering she attended, Joanna remembered very well how the expression of the young lady in maroon dress always appeared on her face every time she and all the ladies in her circle brought up the topic that was related to the young General of Archess.
Even if the news about the General that circulated at that time was nothing great in Joanna’s opinion, Lady Clara would talk about it as if it were the greatest news of centuries.
Hence, Joanna was not surprised to hear that she was noticed because of the General.
A compliment full of admiration would always be voiced loudly by Clara de Lorn if that was in regard to him. It had made Joanna wonder, over time, what made that beautiful lady so smitten by the young General.
Was it because he had contributed to saving their kingdom, as she had declared before? If so, Joanna could not help but feel astonished at how that occasion made the beautiful lady turn into his loyal admirer.
"Lady Clara de Lorn is the most beautiful lady in Barasca, and some said that her beauty had surpassed any lady in Terra." Joanna shifted her focus to the General, who still refused to sit on either bench. "She is not only a righteous lady but also a very talented one. Good at embroidery and playing piano, and even her painting skill has been recognized by His Majesty the King." Joanna continued to speak, holding the opponent’s gaze that was still directed straight at her.
As if not noticing the unusual expression that was depicted in front of her, Joanna kept maintaining her smile. She calmly said, "There are numerous gentlemen who have courted Lady Clara because of how much they want to have a beautiful, righteous, and talented lady as a wife. To have Lady Clara as a wife will definitely bring pride and fortune to whoever becomes her husband."
Turning her head to see the blushing lady, who still had her eyes downcast, she continued uttering, "I apologize if it sounds presumptuous. But would Lady Clara mind telling me why you haven’t chosen one of the proposals that I believe have been sent to the de Lorn mansion continuously up until now?"
Finding the beautiful lady’s blue eyes widening as the first response to her question, Joanna added calmly, "But it is fine if Lady Clara doesn’t want to answer. I apologize for my ignorance and impertinence."
At the sudden question that poked her private matter, Lady Clara was obviously taken aback. But there was no need for more than ten seconds for her to collect her composure and give her response.
"Oh, please don’t worry about that, Lady Joanna." Lady Clara shook her head. "I am fine with that question, as you are not the first person asking me about that matter." Letting out a heavy sigh, she lowered her eyes. "Well, my answer will always be the same." She began to narrate the reason in a low voice laced with sorrow.
"There is someone precious in my heart, and it is still hard for me to open my heart for someone else, no matter how prestigious the proposal of marriage offered to me." A sad look hovered on her face, adding to the sense of a broken-hearted lady as she opened up about the reason behind her status as an unmarried lady while she was of marriageable age.
"Oh my... How lucky is the person who has held a special place in Lady Clara’s heart?" Joanna exclaimed. "If I may know, who is that lucky person? Do I know him?" Joanna asked, and a genuine puzzled look was apparent on her face.
This time, it took longer for Lady de Lorn to answer Joanna’s subsequent questions as she stared at Joanna with her brows slightly furrowed. But again, finding the lady before her to have a calm demeanor, Clara was also regaining her composure, and she was ready to answer.
