Chapter 106: Broken cord
Chapter 106: Broken cord
Calmness and peacefulness washed over Joanna this night. It was completely different from the three nights she had spent at the Powel Orphanage, where she was faced with dreadfulness before she went to sleep.
She was alone and did not need to feel restless due to the presence of the man in her room. There was no man who teased her for his amusement or burdened her with his stubborn gaze at the moment.
Under the blanket of the warm glow emitted from the candles and oil lamps in her room, the sound of flipped paper when Joanna turned over the page was the only sound filling the stillness in the room. It was a really serene atmosphere.
She had read nonstop for about two hours since she read the first page of a hundred-page novel. Eventually, she leaned over the drawer next to her bed. As she found the handkerchief that she sought after, Joanna closed her eyes and wiped away the tears from there and her wet cheeks before blowing out the clear snot that kept running in channels from her nose.
"Why did they have to separate like that? Why didn’t they try to be open about their true feelings and confess to each other without separating?" Joanna murmured while taking a new handkerchief and pressing it on her closed, wet eyes, as the tears refused to stop.
The book was indeed beautifully written. The poetic language that was inserted by the author added beauty to the story she wrote. The methapors used also enhanced the uniqueness of the writing style of the author.
There was no doubt that the author was gifted with writing skills, although this was her first book. No wonder the book was also best-selling, and almost all the ladies fell in love with the story.
Dear Mister Camel was a heartbreaking romance novel that told the story of childhood friends who fell for each other but denied and hid their feelings as they were afraid of losing each other if each knew about their feelings.
The male lead was a disabled man who lost both of his arms because of an incident when he was a kid. The female lead had always helped him, becoming his hands when they were situated outside his home.
As they grew and became adults, everything, of course, changed. So many gentlemen courted the female lead, but she had never laid her eyes on them. Her eyes and heart were only for the male lead.
The male lead did not want to be her burden. He actually sensed that they fell for each other, but he chose to leave without saying goodbye to the female lead, not wanting to have her future bleak when they were together. Aside from that, there were no blessings for them from the female lead’s parents.
Unbeknownst to the male lead, the female lead suffered from a chronic illness. When he decided to come back to his home because he realized that he could not be away from her, everything was late. She had gone far away—too far away to be with the shining stars in the dark sky.
Only one letter was left for him.
’Dear Mister Camel,
In the next life, I will never forgive you if you leave me, like you did in this lifetime.
In the next life, let’s grow old together and let me be your hands forever.
In the next life, I will let you know that I love you.
And I love you.
Your Mrs. Camel’
It was their fate in that lifetime to be separated heart-wrenchingly.
"They are supposed to be together," Joanna murmured under her breath again, blowing the snot out of her nose with the handkerchief.
She actually hated reading romance books with sad endings. She had avoided it so far, but the ladies that she met in one social gathering before she moved to Archess said that it was a highly demanded book as the story written was beautiful. Hence, she was curious about that.
It was indeed a beautiful story, but she did not like it if it made her cry like this. She had expected that the author would make them live happily together, but she did not find it until the end of the story.
What she earned was that she could not stop the tears from streaming down her cheeks and the snot from her nose even after the book was closed.
As Joanna was drowning in sorrow over a best-selling book, a sudden soft knock on the other side of the door made her emerge from the depths of the heart-wrenching story.
No. She did not want to receive any guests right now, especially when she was messed up like this. Therefore, she did not answer whoever was knocking on her door. Instead, Joanna just sat on the bed, leaning her forehead on her bent knees with her hands squeezing her nose as clear snot kept flowing out together with tears.
It really was not normal for her to cry like this, making her reconsider reading the book by the same author again if it had a sad ending. Joanna decided in her mind.
The soft knocking sound was coming again, and Joanna still refused to give a response. She thought that if she did not respond to it, then whoever was outside the door would think that she was already asleep and would not keep knocking on the door.
"I know you are still awake, Joanna." A voice came from outside the door, as if able to read what was on her mind.
Joanna lifted her head to look at the door in a dash when the deep voice that she recognized very well softly echoed in her room.
Why was he not sleeping yet? What was he doing wandering around at midnight? Joanna let out a sigh. It made her more certain not to give any response.
There was no way he knew she was not asleep yet. He just tried to disturb her, testing if he could find amusement from her. If he did not receive any response from her, he would leave immediately, as he might believe that she was not awake like he guessed. That was what Joanna thought.
Hence, Joanna just sat still while pinching her nose to stop the snot from flowing down. She really wanted to blow her nose, but if she did that, the man would hear the noise coming from her room.
"If you don’t open the door, I will knock even harder, Joanna. And if you still don’t open the door after I do so, I will use force to open the door," said the man outside the door, threatening her.
Why could he be so annoying? When would he stop threatening her? Joanna gritted her teeth. But she really could not open the door and let him see her like this, as he would for sure laugh at her, just like when she fell on her bottom this afternoon.
It was then that she was jolted by the three louder sounds of knocking on the door.
Without wasting any more seconds, Joanna reacted, jumping off her bed and storming toward the door. Otherwise, this annoying man would make all people awake and then rush to her room and find out she was crying.
Although her home was too big to make the range of the sounds that just resonated be heard, there was a high possibility the annoying man would knock even harder and break the door.
Opening the door, Joanna snapped. "What are you doing at this hour? Don’t say that you want to sleep in my room. I will not allow that to happen. And if you insist on doing that, I will scream as loud as I can until my vocal cord breaks later. I don’t care if people would..." And Joanna, who spoke at a quick pace in a low voice without a break like an unleashed bull, suddenly stopped.
A cold sensation on her cheek broke her vocal cord.
