Chapter 82: Chapter 82 Can You Walk with Me?_1
"What’s your backup plan?"
Carson Flores asked directly, "Martin Baker has set a trap for you, and it’s impossible that you didn’t notice it. Since you’ve agreed to his challenge and made a military order, you must have something to rely on in your heart."
Shirley Miller’s gaze was slightly surprised; she realized that although Carson Flores didn’t even qualify to attend board meetings or senior company meetings, he was incredibly knowledgeable about everything happening within the company.
Since their late-night chat, Shirley Miller’s impression of Carson Flores had improved a lot. She was willing to confide in Carson the worries she couldn’t share with anyone else. Even if Carson couldn’t help, having someone listen to her concerns was good enough.
"Yes, but it’s useless now."
Carson Flores frowned: "How so?"
Shirley Miller sighed, "I know Martin Baker’s plan, but I didn’t think he had the influence to make so many banks refuse us a loan. Moreover, the deputy governor of Polgel Commercial Bank is my father’s close brother, and the Miller Group’s debt ratio is not high; it’s a prime candidate for corporate lending..."
By this point, Carson Flores had already guessed the outcome, "So you found out that not only did the banks that promised to lend you money go back on their word, but even your last-resort deputy governor refused you, right?"
Shirley Miller’s expression was distressed: "Yes, I can’t understand it. The Baker Family may have some connections and power, but it can’t possibly reach this extent, to interfere with so many banks’ decisions—even my supportive uncle refused me."
Carson Flores asked, "How did he refuse you? Did he give you any advice?"
Shirley Miller stared at Carson Flores in astonishment, "How did you know he gave me advice?"
Carson Flores explained, "From your tone, it’s clear that the deputy governor has a very good relationship with your father. Now, under pressure, he refuses to help you. He must be feeling somewhat guilty and would likely give you some hints or advice."
Shirley Miller pursed her lips, "Yes, he said he was in a difficult position, unable to help me. He also advised me to give up, saying I couldn’t win against the Baker Family. He suggested selling my shares at a good price, to get out of River Miller and leave Polgel."
Carson Flores nodded, then suddenly asked, "Supreme Sky Corporation, do you know it?"
Shirley Miller looked at Carson Flores, puzzled, "Of course, the financial giant that started in Polgel City. While its headquarters are in Polgel, its business has long since spread throughout the province."
Carson Flores smiled, "The Baker Family’s backing is Supreme Sky Corporation."
Shirley Miller’s expression was shocked, "Supreme Sky Corporation?"
Carson Flores nodded, "As you said, the Baker Family couldn’t possibly have that much power, but Supreme Sky Corporation, as a tycoon in the financial world, naturally has enough influence in the banking sector."
Shirley Miller’s beautiful eyes widened, "The banks going back on their word, refusing to lend to me, was Supreme Sky Corporation’s doing? How do you know about this?"
Carson Flores smiled, "Just a fortunate coincidence."
Shirley Miller felt complicated. Carson had just arrived and had been at the company for only a few days, yet he had already figured out the power behind the Baker Family. Meanwhile, she had been in the company for so long, and despite her dealings with Martin Baker, she was completely unaware.
A sense of defeat rose in Shirley Miller’s heart. Was she really incapable of managing the entire company?
"Thank you for the reminder. I’ll think of another way. You should go to sleep now."
Carson Flores hummed, "You should rest early too. You need to be in good spirits to fight."
After Carson Flores left, Shirley Miller looked at the empty doorway, her eyes filled with complexity.
...
Days at work are days for slacking off.
Although Carson Flores was a team leader, he hardly managed anything. He just let Jax Gross handle everything, which made his days easy and joyful.
Shirley Miller was busy every day trying to secure loans, but it didn’t seem to be going well.
Friday arrived in the blink of an eye, and just when it was about to be time to leave work, Carson Flores unexpectedly received a call from Shirley Miller.
Carson Flores was somewhat surprised. This was the first time Shirley Miller had taken the initiative to call him.
"Do you have time after work?"
Carson Flores replied, "I have time, what’s up?"
Shirley Miller sounded hesitant, "I have a dinner engagement I can’t avoid, but I’m a bit uneasy about going alone. Could you accompany me?"
Carson Flores laughed, "A dinner related to the loan?"
Shirley Miller hummed, "Yes."
Carson Flores frowned, "The other party won’t discuss with you during office hours but wants to have dinner with you to talk?"
Shirley Miller’s voice was two notches weaker, "Yes."
Carson Flores understood and chuckled, "Alright, I’ll accompany you."
"Thank you!"
Shirley Miller clearly relaxed. She had worked up the courage to call Carson; after all, despite living under the same roof, she and Carson Flores had no real relationship.
"Where’s the dinner?"
"Upper Lin Hotel."
A hotel?
Carson Flores raised an eyebrow but made no comment, "Are we meeting at the hotel, or shall we go together?"
Shirley Miller replied, "You can ride with me in my car."
Carson Flores agreed readily, "Alright."
Shirley Miller instructed, "After work, don’t rush off. We’ll meet in the parking lot later and head out together."
"Okay."
After work, Carson Flores went to the parking garage and sat in his car playing with his phone. About twenty minutes later, Shirley Miller came down and called him.
Carson Flores went to the front of Shirley Miller’s BMW X7, pulled open the rear car door, and sat inside.
Carson Flores looked at Shirley Miller in the rearview mirror and smiled, "I’m not sitting in the back to act like a boss; it’s to avoid being seen with you, which could create unnecessary trouble. Of course, if you mind, I don’t mind sitting in the passenger seat or driving."
