Chapter 285: Chapter 285 These Unscrupulous Merchants!_1
"Off work, let’s go, time to grab some food."After shift handover, Carson called out to Augustus, ready for dinner.
Augustus laughed, "Carson, you treat us every day. How could I let you do that? Let me take care of it today."
Carson laughed. "Sure."
The two headed to the Sanwa Food Stall, taking their usual corner seats, ordering food, pulling out a case of beer, and started drinking.
"Carson, don’t you have a girlfriend? Why don’t you go see her after work instead of always eating with us?"
Carson laughed. "Being together all day is so boring, man. Drinking with the guys is much more relaxing. Wait until you’re married, and you’ll understand. Marriage is like a siege; those outside want to break in, and those inside want to break out."
Augustus laughed, "I’m not as capable as you, Carson. Just a regular security guard. Who would look up to me?"
Carson popped a peanut into his mouth and said with a chuckle, "Didn’t you mention your family’s old house is up for demolition? You’re probably getting a nice compensation, right? With a new house and the compensation money, you’ll be in a better position. Besides, you’re a decent guy. Are you worried no girls will like you?"
Augustus gave a simple smile, his eyes revealing a hint of hope, "I hope so. I’m not that capable; I just want to find a suitable woman to live with. As long as she’s decent-looking, diligent, and good at managing everyday life, that’s enough."
After his wishful thinking, Augustus’s face turned worried again, "Although the demolition is planned, the compensation hasn’t been finalized. The developers are offering a very low sum; we’re still negotiating with them."
"Are there many people involved?"
Carson casually inquired. Demolition matters were always complex; some were willing, some were not, and people in the same area might receive different compensations. The more resourceful could get more, the less so could get less.
Augustus said with a wry smile, "There were quite a few people initially, but a bunch changed their minds two days ago and signed the agreement. I’m not sure if they settled privately. Now there are only about a dozen households, including us, yet to agree."
Carson wasn’t surprised and replied with a smile, "They probably got what they wanted and pulled out. What’s your situation now?"
With a helpless tone, Augustus said, "We just want them to follow the official standards, but they refuse and want to undercut us. Some people were harassed and intimidated a few days ago. It’s troubling. Ah, let’s not talk about this, let’s drink!"
The two chatted and drank until halfway through, Augustus received a call and his expression changed dramatically.
"Okay, I’ll be right there."
Augustus hung up, "Carson, there’s an emergency at home. I have to go back now. I can’t finish drinking with you today."
Carson, noticing Augustus’s grim face, asked with concern, "What happened?"
Augustus said angrily, "The developers have already brought bulldozers to the site. If we don’t sign, they’re going to forcefully demolish our houses. These crooks completely ignore the official compensation standards, skimming at least half of it!"
Carson stood up, "I’ve got nothing else going on. I’ll come take a look with you."
Demolition sites often led to violence, and it was easy for someone to get hurt. Augustus’s interests were at stake, and the youngster had a stubborn streak; Carson worried he might get into trouble.
Grateful for Carson’s skills, Augustus thanked him, "Thanks, Carson!"
"Let’s go!"
Riding on Augustus’s motorcycle, the two returned to Augustus’s home.
Augustus’s home was in an old residential area, devoid of tall buildings. Each family had an old house with its own plot of land. As the city expanded, such neighborhoods were being bought up, demolished, rebuilt, and eventually turned into neat and tidy apartment complexes.
A big group of people was gathered there, split into two apparent sides, arguing vociferously.
Augustus quickly joined the arguing group, brandishing an official notice, debating vigorously with the negotiators from the real estate company.
Carson did not join in but focused on the group at the back. There, about a dozen men huddled together smoking, each with a tough and fierce look, obviously not the sort to be trifled with.
Trouble seemed imminent that day.
After about ten minutes, the argument escalated into pushing and shoving, and before long, one of the real estate negotiators was cleanly knocked to the ground, clutching his face and screaming, "Assault! Help, help!"
The group of men in the distance flicked their cigarette butts to the ground and surged forward.
Carson sighed, stepped forward, and placed himself in front of the gang.
The leader scanned Carson with a cold snort and, without saying a word, swung a steel pipe downward fiercely toward Carson’s head.
