Chapter 316: Chapter 320: A Tampered Life (Part 2)

Several brothers who came back from work in the afternoon reacted just like Granny Su, afraid that Su Li hadn’t eaten enough, pushing around, none of them willing to eat more.

"Eat the cut melon quickly, it’s going to spoil."

After Su Li said this, her brothers finally wiped the sweat from their faces and ate happily with silly smiles.

But Qiao Xiaohong seemed a bit unhappy.

Su Li just smiled and didn’t move.

She didn’t try to please Qiao Xiaohong eagerly like the original owner.

Qiao Xiaohong was waiting for Su Li to notice the displeasure on her face as usual and then to hand over the watermelon voluntarily.

But when Su Li didn’t move after a long wait, Qiao Xiaohong glared with even greater displeasure.

Yan Nizi, the outspoken eldest sister-in-law, saw this and retorted right away, "Why the long face? Don’t you have hands? Can’t you take it yourself if you want to eat, or are you waiting for your little sister to feed you?"

Granny Su was busy chasing chickens back into their cages in the courtyard outside when Yan Nizi, unable to restrain her loud mouth, spoke so loudly that Granny Su heard everything clearly.

The agile old woman, hands on hips, rushed into the hall.

"Damn it, your sister cares about you all so much; her father especially brought this watermelon back for her. She herself has barely eaten any, saving most of it for you, and still you are not satisfied? Always restless and jealous as if you have pink eye, unable to see others’ happiness. If you were as sensible and caring as Li Bao, I would cherish you too..."

Though she did not name names, everyone present knew who she was scolding.

Yan Nizi, not minding at all, smiled cheerfully, quickly finished the watermelon in her hand, and picked up another piece to hand to her husband, Su Jun.

Youngest brother Su Gen and his wife Xu Xiaomiao just glanced up and remained silent, neither of them intending to speak up.

Were they crazy? Granny Su’s fierce temper was well known far and wide. She was only loving and gentle towards Su Li in their family...

It’s baffling how Qiao Xiaohong never learns, always unable to stand seeing her younger sister doing well.

The family doted solely on her, as she was the only pampered daughter.

It wasn’t just the elders in the family but all of them who cherished her.

Moreover, even if the elders were biased towards Li Bao, they never treated the others unfairly.

Su Jun held the sweet watermelon in his hand and didn’t eat, instead frowning and looking towards his younger brother, Su Mo.

Qiao Xiaohong looked resentfully towards her husband too, hoping he would speak up for her.

Her being upset and unhappy was normal, wasn’t it?

Why should Su Li, just because she was a girl, be treated better than them brothers?

They toiled hard in the fields to earn work points, while she, on the other hand, just lay around at home all day.

Safe from the sun and the wind, comfortable, and even getting to eat rare treats.

Granny Su, growing even angrier, pointed directly at Qiao Xiaohong’s nose and scolded loudly, "Qiao Xiaohong, don’t bring your Qiao family’s ways to our Su family."

"Your Qiao family may degrade their daughters, but we don’t have such rules here in the Su family."

"If you can’t stand it, then get out early."

These words were somewhat harsh, and Qiao Xiaohong’s eyes instantly reddened, tears flowing uncontrollably.

Granny Su still felt it wasn’t enough and continued relentlessly, "I don’t know what got into the head of my eldest, marrying such a troublemaker back home."

"Granny, please stop talking. Xiao Hong is just having a hard time adjusting; I’ll go talk to her properly in the room."

Su Mo, who had been silent like a wooden club this whole time, finally spoke up.

But his words were not the protective ones Qiao Xiaohong had hoped for.

She felt very disappointed, bit her lip, and suddenly ran outside.

Su Mo was startled and prepared to chase after her.

"Don’t you go," Granny Su yelled with full authority, "Let her run. She always runs back to her mother’s house at the slightest provocation, spoiling her rotten."

Hearing this, Su Mo hesitated for a moment and then silently sat back down, followed by an apologetic glance at Su Li.

Those present all sneered and cursed Qiao Xiaohong for being foolish.

Frankly speaking, within miles around, it was hard to find another family like the Su Family that didn’t mistreat their daughters-in-law and actually treated them well.

It was just about being nice to their own daughter, which, for Yan Nizi and Xu Xiaomiao, was the best case scenario.

Otherwise, getting married into another family, one would worry about bearing a girl child and upsetting the in-laws.

Now it was perfect. If she bore a girl, she would be as blessed as her aunt, and if it was a boy, that wasn’t bad either.

Qiao Xiaohong might seem clever, but she was actually just foolish.

Little did she know how many families in the village wanted to marry their daughters into the Su Family. She didn’t cherish her fortune and always tried to compete with Su Li. Was that necessary?

Without Qiao Xiaohong’s sarcasm, the atmosphere became much more harmonious all at once.

Su Li smiled, took a piece of watermelon, and held it up to Granny Su’s mouth, letting her take a bite from his hand.

"Granny, don’t be angry anymore; I’d be heartbroken if you got upset."

Granny Su’s stern face instantly relaxed and broke into a smile. "I’m not angry, not angry."

Yan Nizi clicked her tongue silently, thinking to herself that Li Bao was really useful; just a word from her and Granny’s anger dissipated entirely.

But Xu Xiaomiao looked at Su Li curiously several times.

Today, the young nun was a bit smarter, not letting Qiao Xiaohong lead her by the nose anymore.

Su Li, of course, noticed the evaluative gaze of the third sister-in-law but paid it no mind.

Despite Xu Xiaomiao being reserved and quiet, Su Li regarded her as the smartest among them.

Yan Nizi, the eldest sister-in-law, was hot-headed, loud, yet lacking cunning.

The other three brothers were not eloquent, but they loved Su Li, the daughter of the second uncle, dearly from her childhood.

Had it been before, the original owner would have definitely tried to mediate, urging her brother Su Mo to coax Qiao Xiaohong back, but with Su Li here, that was absolutely impossible.

Su Mo himself didn’t have such thoughts.

Later in the evening, when Su Li’s uncle, aunt, and her own parents also returned, Granny Su scolded the aunt fiercely, letting them know about the earlier incident.

Su Li’s parents were livid, and the aunt even more so.

Who would have thought that from the start when looking at marriages, seeing how capable and industrious Qiao Xiaohong was as the big sister in her family, they had recommended her to their second son, but they hadn’t expected her temperament to be like this.

It was a misjudgment, a regret...

There was no tradition of divorce in the countryside, so they had to accept it, however reluctantly.

The aunt treated Su Li as her own daughter; and now, with the real culprit absent, she scolded Su Mo and reprimanded him for failing to manage his wife.

Now, Su Mo was even less inclined to bring Qiao Xiaohong back.

During dinner, Su Li experienced once again her elevated status within this family.

The dinner, already scant, surprisingly had a poached egg at the bottom of her bowl.

The way the others accepted this as normal, apparently, such treatment in the Su Family was quite common.

No wonder Qiao Xiaohong was jealous.

While everyone else might still be hungry, she got extra treats.
