Chapter 67: Leading through another dungeon

As if, with just those few words, Yoon Seoyul would turn, unfasten Cheon Areum’s jacket from his shoulders, and drape it around hers instead. And more than that, she was wearing at least three layers more than anyone here—how could she be colder than them?

"Do you want my jacket?"

Cheon Areum offered saintlily. Yoon Seoyul and he moved at an unhurried pace, their steps slightly awkward as they stayed close, arms still wrapped around each other in a loose embrace. Walking together like that wasn’t the most practical, but Lee Nari matched their pace with heels tapping the pavement as she walked just beside Cheon Areum, never more than a step away, like a shadow that refused to fall behind.

"That would be nice. But wouldn’t you be cold then?"

"I wasn’t planning on giving it to you anyway. I was just asking."

Cheon Areum replied, running in small steps to the black gate almost hidden in the trees, but it was taller than the trees too. It was quiet with only the wind blowing. Even though it was getting late, there had been a line of reporters waiting, but the airport security was pretty tight, and they couldn’t even get close to the entrance where the gate was on the grass surrounding the airport. So they just passed them in cars. But if he remembered right, after that high-class hunters meeting in the original plot, it had been Lee Nari and Yoon Seoyul who appeared together before a gate—standing side by side in the public eye.

Lee Nari used to tag along with her brother to every dungeon raid, press briefing, and guild event—anywhere there might be cameras pointed her way. It wasn’t subtle either. She had a habit of inserting herself just enough into the frame to be noticed but never enough to be questioned. It was all calculated, like everything else she did.

He remembered clearly the first time she had appeared alongside her brother and Yoon Seoyul. That one appearance had been enough to send the internet into a frenzy. Fans, netizens, and gossip channels all latched onto it immediately, shipping the two as if fate had personally delivered the pairing.

That was when he knew—Lee Nari had to be the female lead. There was no other reason to stir up a fandom like that if it wasn’t to push a central couple. All signs pointed to her.

Wait... could it be that Lee Nari became more ambitious—maybe even awakened—because of the dating rumors between him and Yoon Seoyul? That did make sense, since the three-member teams were also a new addition made up by her. Knowing Lee Nari, it wasn’t a stretch to say she awakened because she wasn’t the type to sit quietly while someone else got ahead. If anything, the rumors may have been the very thing that made her want to compete.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, huh?

The gate was within reach. Cheon Areum stood before it as he spoke.

"I’ll be leading, and the second in lead will be Yoon Seoyul. Lee Nari, is this your first S-Class gate?"

"I have cleared A-Class gates, but yes, this is my first S-Class gate."

Lee Nari said, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as the wind caught the rest, sending it fluttering behind her like a thin banner. Just as Cheon Areum opened his mouth to reply, the face on his shoulder turned. Yoon Seoyul, his face nuzzled close, began pressing peckish kisses to his lips. Cheon Areum stretched his arm out between them to create some breathing space, barely managing to keep Yoon Seoyul’s wandering lips at bay. Only then did he resume speaking, his voice the same as before.

"Stay close to either one of us if you don’t want to get hurt."

Across from them, Lee Nari stood frozen, gawking at Yoon Seoyul with wide, incredulous eyes. Not waiting for a reply, Cheon Areum stepped into the gate, seeking refuge from the cold wind. As he’d hoped, the air beyond the threshold was noticeably warmer, like stepping into a heated room from a snowstorm. But Cheon Areum and Yoon Seoyul, who had entered almost at the same time, were separated instantly.

Like characters dropped into a simulation game, they were hauled into a scenario. Cheon Areum sat in the passenger seat of the car, his hands resting quietly on his lap, while Yoon Seoyul sat in the back seat beside Lee Nari. The view outside the windshield was unfamiliar, and the sun hung high in the middle of the sky, blazing down at them.

At the wheel was a middle-aged man, humming a tune under his breath, driving with excitement. His hands gripped the steering wheel confidently, navigating through the unfamiliar terrain like he had done this a hundred times.

"This is normal for S-Class gates? I don’t like being moved without my knowing."

"Scenarios aren’t my favorite either, but—"

"It’s best to follow through the scenarios."

Cheon Areum began to answer Lee Nari’s question when Yoon Seoyul cut in between and finished for him.

"Right."

Cheon Areum confirmed.

"Imagine if monsters started pouring in from the car doors. We would be instantly cornered into the car..."

Lee Nari spoke in an unsettlingly and sweet tone, inching closer to the middle of the backseat—or closer to Yoon Seoyul—as if Yoon Seoyul couldn’t just tear apart the car with his bare hands if he wanted to.

"You don’t have any offensive skills that would work on the car, but you can always use degenerate on the monsters to keep yourself safe."

Surprised by the genuine advice, which she definitely had thought of herself, Lee Nari smiled with her eyes at him in the rearview mirror.

"Or if you think it is really that dangerous to stay inside the car, you can always jump out."

Cheon Areum opened the car door as he spoke informally and threw his body outside when he was done speaking.
