Chapter 58: 058 Jiang Tao’s Inside Information
As expected, Tang Dou was a good child. After his pain subsided, he became well-behaved once again and played amicably with Liu Banxia. As Qiaoqiao was leaving with him, Tang Dou popped his head out of the car window to catch a final glimpse of Liu Banxia.
Liu Banxia was in high spirits. While it was true that Tang Dou was not the most conventional patient, his bone-setting technique had proven successful. This reaffirmed his faith in his chosen path; his agility and spirit had allowed him to navigate the world of orthopedics without issue.
One can never have too many skills. After all, in past times, surgeons would oversee all aspects of care, without the level of specialization seen today.
Upon returning to the Emergency Department, he was taken aback by the odd look in Liang Xiaolin’s eyes.
Just yesterday we made amends, and she was eager for my advice. Why then does her gaze today betray disdain, contempt, and defiance? he wondered.
Little did he know that his special patient, Tang Dou, had led to a misunderstanding. His clothes were now disheveled from their playful encounter. In Liang Xiaolin’s view, his rush had left him no time to tidy himself up.
"Charge the splint and bandages to my account, please. Given the unique nature of the patient, consider it on me," Liu Banxia told the nurse, Zhang Ping.
Liang Xiaolin pursed her lips. He says it like it’s true, but everyone knows what he was really doing, she thought.
Having issued his instructions, Liu Banxia went to change his clothes in the dressing room. Tang Dou might have been fun to play with, but I still need to be responsible towards patients, he thought. However, his actions only further confirmed Liang Xiaolin’s suspicions. He really is a terrible person, she thought, her opinion of him plummeting.
At half-past eight, he handed over his duties to Shi Lei, had a hasty breakfast, then slowly made his way to the Department of Colorectal Surgery.
Even though he was no longer earning experience points, he still had to complete the daily tasks for skill points and Glory Points. Besides, he couldn’t risk neglecting Director Jiang’s task after the lesson learned from Shi Lei’s experience.
"You sure made a splash yesterday," Guan Wei said with a grin.
"Word got around that quickly?" Liu Banxia asked in surprise.
"What did you expect? The whole hospital was abuzz last night. Some staff even heard the news from patients. Word tends to get around in a hospital," Guan Wei explained.
"So, I’ve become infamous again. Well, the more lice, the less they itch. Brother Guan, were you also on duty last night?" Liu Banxia asked.
Guan Wei nodded. "A patient I operated on yesterday afternoon had some intraoperative bleeding. I was worried, so I decided to stay overnight at the hospital."
Liu Banxia gave him a thumbs-up. Guan Wei could have easily delegated the patient’s care, but his decision to stay personally was truly admirable.
Having spent multiple days changing dressings here, he was now more familiar with the patients in this department than those in the General Surgery Department. Although several patients had been discharged, many still came for dressing changes.
Given the prevailing living standards, people suffering from colorectal diseases were not uncommon.
This dressing change session had earned him 5 Glory Points, 407 dressing technique proficiency points, and 48 anal fistula ligation proficiency points.
"Director Jiang, when did you get here?" Liu Banxia asked, seeing Jiang Tao waving at him after he had taken off his gloves.
"Sometimes I don’t understand you, kid. Determined to stay in General Surgery, yet always crossing swords with Old Qin," Jiang Tao said with a laugh.
Liu Banxia looked slightly embarrassed. "It’s not that I’m trying to make excuses, Director, but it’s really not my doing. Director Qin seems to have singled me out, almost as if he’s waiting for me to make a mistake."
"I don’t care about that. Have you considered my offer?" Jiang Tao asked.
"Director Jiang, you’re not upset, are you?" Liu Banxia asked with a sheepish smile. "I performed an appendectomy yesterday, and it has only reaffirmed my desire to stay in the General Surgery Department."
"Sigh... I knew you were ambitious, kid. But it’s good to have such determination," Jiang Tao remarked, nodding.
DING! Mission to earn Jiang Tao’s favor: Progress 50%.
Experience points gained: 400.
Liu Banxia breathed a sigh of relief. I should be able to avoid any punishment, right? he thought. He recalled the completion threshold being 50%. Although the system had swallowed the 400 experience points, he had no choice but to endure it.
"However, even if you do end up staying in General Surgery, you should occasionally stop by here to share your dressing techniques and experiences," Jiang Tao added.
"I’ve been trying these past few days, but I have to admit I’m getting old. Compared to you, I’m still a long way off. The resident doctors will be arriving next month, so you’ll need to share your knowledge with them properly."
"If they develop bad habits, it will be hard to correct them later. Instilling the correct methods in them during their residency will be beneficial for their future," Jiang Tao continued.
"Rest assured, Director Jiang. As long as I’m at the Second Hospital, I’ll come right away whenever you call," Liu Banxia promised.
Jiang Tao nodded in satisfaction. "You might be a little eccentric, kid, but you’ve earned the admiration of many. Even Director Cui spoke up for you in yesterday’s meeting. Continue to perform well. You still stand a great chance of staying."
"Uh... Director Jiang, are you serious?" Liu Banxia said, stunned.
"I don’t have time for idle talk. I still have two surgeries this morning. You can go now," Jiang Tao said, waving him off.
Jiang Tao’s insider information had truly stunned Liu Banxia. He now recalled Liang Xiaolin’s comments from yesterday, which had made him incredibly curious.
Those who have backing really do have an edge; their sources are so well-informed, Liu Banxia thought. So that’s why she said what she did; she must have already known the details.
"Doctor Liang, is there something you want to tell me?" he asked, approaching Liang Xiaolin with a grin.
"Oh, I didn’t see anything, I didn’t hear anything, I really don’t know!" Liang Xiaolin blurted out nervously.
Liang Xiaolin had misunderstood, thinking Liu Banxia was referring to the events of that morning. Liu Banxia, in turn, misunderstood her reaction, believing she genuinely knew what had been discussed during yesterday’s high-level meeting.
"You think I don’t know? Come on, just tell me. What was discussed about me at such a high-level meeting? Do I have a chance of staying?" Liu Banxia queried.
Liang Xiaolin paused, then took a breath. "I really don’t know. Chief Director Li only mentioned that there was a discussion about you. Oh dear, I need to go study with Dr. Chen."
With these words, Liang Xiaolin hurried away. It’s always so awkward around Liu Banxia, she thought. Honestly, after doing... that sort of thing so often, the least he could do is take a shower!
Liu Banxia stroked his chin, mulling over Liang Xiaolin’s words. The discussions about me must have been intense, he mused.
If the system had given him a ray of hope for staying at the hospital, then today’s insider news was the true glimmer of dawn, heralding his impending victory, he thought.
With the system’s help, I can continue to improve and better demonstrate my capabilities within the limited time I have, he considered. What once seemed impossible is now becoming increasingly possible.
