The Enhanced Doctor -
Chapter 57 - 057 Special Patient
Chapter 57: 057 Special Patient
The patients were quite cooperative during last night’s shift; I only treated two who had drunk too much and needed their stomachs pumped. Even for the Second Hospital, it was a rare quiet night on duty.
Even Liu Banxia, who was usually eager for surgeries, found such a shift to be a welcome rarity.
After a shower, he still had to be sharp for the day shift.
"Someone’s looking for you. Specifically for you," Liang Xiaolin said as soon as he returned to the emergency department.
Looking towards the waiting hall, he saw Qiaoqiao holding her phone, her face etched with anxiety.
"What’s wrong this time? Is the patient registered?" Liu Banxia asked.
"Not registered. It might have a fractured bone," Qiaoqiao replied.
"Then hurry. Where’s the patient? I’ll call someone from orthopedics," Liu Banxia said quickly.
"Um... the patient is in the car. Can you come out and help me?" Qiaoqiao asked.
Without a second thought, Liu Banxia followed Qiaoqiao outside. When they reached the parking lot and he saw the "patient," Liu Banxia felt like banging his head against the car door.
The car was a fine one, a Porsche Panamera; it was just that the "patient" was rather unconventional. A large dog’s head poked out of the car window, its tongue lolling as it curiously regarded Liu Banxia.
"Seriously, are you kidding me? What’s going on?" Liu Banxia asked, exasperated.
"It’s Baobao. This morning, while I was walking it, its left front paw went into a hole. Then it started yelping as if it was fractured, and it can’t really move," Qiaoqiao explained.
"Then take it to a vet. An X-ray would confirm it," Liu Banxia said, taking a slight step back.
The dog was considerably oversized, its body filling the entire back seat. Its huge head looked rather intimidating. Based on his rudimentary knowledge, it had to be an Alaskan Malamute—the largest of the so-called ’Three Foolish Sled Dogs.’
"It was too early; all the veterinary clinics I went to were closed. I thought I’d try my luck and see if you could help. Please, just take a look at it. Tang Dou is really obedient," Qiaoqiao pleaded.
"I’m curious... do you walk it, or does it walk you?" Liu Banxia asked.
"Why are you so nosy? Why else would I bring it out so early? If it got excited, there’s no way I could hold it back. Just look at its leg, please. I think it’s really fractured," Qiaoqiao said anxiously.
Liu Banxia was at a loss for words. "I’m not a vet, so I can’t take it into the hospital for an X-ray. Besides, animals often become aggressive when injured. With a mouth that big, if it really bit me, it’d be as crunchy as a carrot, wouldn’t it?"
"Oh... Tang Dou is very gentle, you’ll see." As soon as Qiaoqiao finished speaking, she opened the car door and carefully lifted Tang Dou’s left foreleg.
Surprisingly, Tang Dou was indeed very obedient. It must have been in pain, yet it only let out soft whimpers, rubbing its head against Qiaoqiao. Liu Banxia also noticed that its left foreleg looked abnormal, seemingly twisted to the left. It was likely fractured.
However, he was genuinely troubled. He could attempt to realign Tang Dou’s fractured bone and then splint it. That would at least make Tang Dou more comfortable and prevent disruption to the leg’s blood circulation.
But he was also worried. Qiaoqiao had raised Tang Dou for so long, treating it like family, so she could handle it easily. He, however, was a stranger. He feared that in the moment of excruciating pain from setting the bone, Tang Dou might actually bite him.
"Look how much pain Tang Dou is in. The pet hospitals don’t open until nine, so it’ll have to suffer for over two more hours," Qiaoqiao said pitifully.
"Alright, here’s the plan. You sit in the car and hold its head, make it look away. Then I’ll try," Liu Banxia said reluctantly. "Normally, it should be given an anesthetic, but it’s not a regular patient, and I can’t get any. Are you sure it’s really well-behaved and won’t bite? It’s definitely going to hurt a lot."
Qiaoqiao nodded vigorously. "It won’t. Even when I pulled its leg out of the hole, it didn’t bite me. It has never bitten anyone."
Liu Banxia sighed inwardly. If it were anyone else, he definitely wouldn’t bother with this. This was ridiculous. However, Qiaoqiao had helped him deal with Old Qin, and now she was begging so pitifully. Plus, she was a beauty. He just couldn’t bring himself to refuse.
He hurried back to the emergency department, found a splint and bandages, and then hurried out again.
Liang Xiaolin furrowed her brow. What was he up to now? If there was a real patient, they should be brought in for treatment. How dare he so blatantly try to earn extra money right at the hospital entrance?
This thought annoyed her. After a moment’s hesitation—since there were no patients at the moment anyway—she decided to go out and see what was happening.
She tiptoed outside and scanned the area, but couldn’t find Liu Banxia. Then, she noticed a Porsche Panamera shaking.
Could he be in that car? That would fit my theory; he must be trying to do this discreetly, she thought. Since I’m already out here, I might as well go take a look. If he really dares to make extra money right at the hospital entrance, I’ll have to give him a warning. Even if his character isn’t great, he is a proper surgeon, after all.
Before she could get closer, she heard a woman’s voice from inside, "Are you a man or not? I’m not scared, so what are you afraid of?" This made Liang Xiaolin stop in her tracks. This seems a bit different from what I guessed?
"I’m afraid I’ll hurt you. It will be extremely painful later. What if I hurt you?" Liu Banxia’s voice then came from the car.
Upon hearing this, Liang Xiaolin’s face turned red instantly. She bit her lip and silently cursed, Disgusting couple!
Even though she had a good upbringing, had been well-protected by her family, and had spent her limited life focused on studying medicine, it didn’t mean she was completely naive about the ways of the world.
With just those words and the shaking car, anyone could imagine what was happening! I can’t watch this; I’ll get a sty! With a turn, she ran back to the emergency department.
Liu Banxia had no idea he’d acquired a little tail. Even though he had steeled his resolve to help Tang Dou, looking at its large head still made him apprehensive.
He tentatively touched Tang Dou, and the dog obligingly licked his hand.
Taking the plunge, Liu Banxia gently began to feel Tang Dou’s left leg. This was also a rare opportunity for some hands-on practice.
The feedback was much less clear than when he had touched Liang Xiaolin’s wound. Now, he could only roughly feel that the bones in Tang Dou’s fractured leg were somewhat misaligned.
Moreover, the fracture had indeed compressed blood vessels; Tang Dou’s paw felt cool to the touch. If blood flow wasn’t restored quickly, the leg might truly become permanently damaged.
Calming himself again, he tried to visualize the structures around the leg bone in his mind, took a few deep breaths, and then applied force with both hands.
"HOWL! HOWL! HOWL!"
That was truly agonizingly painful; Tang Dou yelped violently.
Ding! You have gained 30 experience points, 100 orthopedic skill proficiency points, and 20 diagnostic skill proficiency points.
The host has mastered 10 skills, unlocking skill options. You can select 3-5 frequently used skills to display on the attribute panel; others can be viewed in the skill tree tab.
Liu Banxia’s eyebrows twitched. I can gain skill points by treating a dog? That’s truly unexpected!
"It should be reset now. I’ll stabilize it first, then you can take it for an X-ray."
Feeling some warmth return to Tang Dou’s injured leg, Liu Banxia carefully splinted and bandaged its left foreleg. He let out a long sigh of relief. He then ruffled the fur on Tang Dou’s large head a few times; it felt surprisingly good.
