The Enhanced Doctor -
Chapter 50 - 050 Digging Pit Together
Chapter 50: 050 Digging Pit Together
Tormented by the task of job transition, Liu Banxia didn’t even enjoy his lunch. When he returned, he eagerly watched the Emergency Department’s entrance, ready to rush out to receive patients at any moment.
"Doctor, the film is out! I told you I was fine, but you didn’t believe me," the taxi driver said, rushing over just as Liu Banxia was watching.
Liu Banxia took the film and examined it carefully. According to the results, everything was indeed normal. But he also trusted the symptoms he had observed.
"Uncle, although the CT scan didn’t show anything, I’d like to order a contrast-enhanced head magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, for you," Liu Banxia proposed after some thought.
"What? An MRI? I’m telling you, Doctor, we can’t keep doing this!" the taxi driver exclaimed anxiously.
"Earlier, I said I didn’t want a CT scan, but you made me get one. Even though the film showed no problems, I had to spend the money. I accepted it because I knew you meant well."
"Now you’re suggesting an MRI? And what’s this about ’enhanced’? You doctors can’t just try to make money unethically! If the CT scan didn’t show anything, how can an MRI be different? I’m not a doctor, but I know CT scans and MRIs are pretty much the same."
"Tang Hongbing, you genuinely have a problem! Based on the symptoms you’re displaying, it’s highly likely you have a cerebral lesion or a cerebrovascular obstruction!" Liu Banxia also lost his temper, blurting out the man’s name.
Liang Xiaolin gently tugged Liu Banxia’s arm, frightened by the unfolding confrontation. She also noticed Qin Hai emerging from his office. Liu Banxia could be in trouble.
"Is this how doctors serve their patients these days?" Tang Hongbing raised his voice.
"Sir, I am the director of the Emergency Department. If you have any issues, you can speak with me," Qin Hai said as he approached.
"You’re the director? Good! You can be the judge. Why are doctors so unscrupulous? A CT scan wasn’t enough; now he wants me to get an MRI!" Tang Hongbing waved the CT film in his hand.
Qin Hai accepted the film, his face calm, but inwardly he was ecstatic. Because of Liu Banxia, he had lost all face this morning. Now, this opportunity had fallen right into his lap. If he didn’t make Liu Banxia pay, he wouldn’t be Qin Hai.
However, remembering Wang Mingxing’s case, he knew he had to play this carefully. This time, he had the CT film; he would review it meticulously.
He didn’t just hold it up to the ceiling light; he needed to be thorough, so he inserted the film into the light viewer.
After studying the film, Qin Hai felt a surge of confidence and composure. Still, he felt it wasn’t quite enough, so he took out his phone and called the radiology department.
"Director Li, hello. This is Old Qin from Emergency. I need a favor. I want to inquire about a patient’s situation. His name is Tang Hongbing; he had a CT scan. Who’s on duty today? Can I speak with them directly?" Qin Hai said as soon as the call connected.
"Alright, Old Qin, hold on a moment. Wang Jianwei, come over here, Director Qin from Emergency is looking for you," Li Weifeng, the director of the radiology department, called out.
Seeing Shi Lei approach, Qin Hai put his phone on speaker. Even if he wanted to deal with Liu Banxia, procedure was important. This was for the hospital, not personal revenge, of course.
"Hello, Director Qin, this is Wang Jianwei," Wang Jianwei’s voice came through the phone.
"Jianwei, I need to ask you about Tang Hongbing—the patient with the sutured head wound who had a CT scan this morning. The results just came out. Do you recall him?" Qin Hai asked hurriedly.
"I remember him. Liu Banxia’s patient. Liu Banxia was worried about a possible cerebral obstruction from the car accident. I examined the films carefully; there’s no problem," Wang Jianwei stated.
"Alright, thank you, Jianwei," Qin Hai said and hung up.
"Director Qin, that’s not right! It’s not—" Liang Xiaolin began, but Liu Banxia caught her hand.
"Linlin, I know you’re worried about me. I’ll take full responsibility for any issues."
Liu Banxia knew, of course, what she was about to say. He also knew Qin Hai’s real goal was to get at him, but he couldn’t let Liang Xiaolin reveal that.
The reason he had insisted Tang Hongbing get the scan wasn’t just what he’d said earlier; the main indicators were the patient’s facial twitching and eyeball trembling. If Liang Xiaolin blurted that out, Old Qin, being quick-witted, might just drop the matter and not go after him.
Liang Xiaolin was flustered, her face reddening. No man who wasn’t family had ever called her ’Linlin’ so intimately, nor grabbed her hand like this. In her confusion, she completely forgot what she had been about to say.
Qin Hai merely glanced at their clasped hands. "Dr. Liu, I’ve reviewed the film myself and also confirmed with the radiology department. The CT scan shows absolutely no problems."
"Guessing right once is luck. Guessing right twice is good fortune. Have your previous successes made you so complacent you’ve forgotten who you are?"
"We cannot impose numerous unnecessary tests on patients based merely on your speculation. I’ve said it before: to be a good doctor, one must first have good ethics. Without ethics, no matter how skilled you are medically, you are not fit to be a doctor."
"Mr. Tang Hongbing, I apologize to you on his behalf. Rest assured, the hospital will handle this matter with utmost seriousness. We will inform you once a decision is reached."
"Ah... well... Director, there’s no need, really. Doctor Liu was just trying to do what’s best for me. I was a bit agitated earlier," Tang Hongbing said, flustered.
He’d gotten carried away in the heat of the moment, but he had calmed down now. From the Director’s tone, it sounded like he intended to punish Doctor Liu severely. That would blow things way out of proportion.
"Rest assured, our hospital has its regulations. Over-treatment, recklessness, and lack of discipline must be addressed. The current tension in doctor-patient relationships is precisely because of such bad apples spoiling the whole barrel for our otherwise excellent medical staff," Qin Hai said righteously.
"Director Qin, I offer a self-criticism," Liu Banxia said, his expression serious.
"However, I still maintain that Tang Hongbing should undergo a contrast-enhanced head MRI. It’s possible the lesion is too small for a standard CT scan to detect."
"You...! Shi Lei, is this the kind of person you brought in?" Qin Hai was furious.
"Director Qin, I strongly support his opinion. I also believe an enhanced head MRI should be performed," Shi Lei said calmly.
He, too, had realized that the radiology department probably hadn’t paid close enough attention because the patient’s description of his symptoms was unclear. But Qin Hai was clearly trying to make trouble today, and Shi Lei couldn’t just stand by and watch.
He understood perfectly why Liu Banxia had stopped Liang Xiaolin. Now Qin Hai was trying to drag him into it as well. Well, even a clay figure has a temper; he might as well add some fuel to this fire and make it burn brighter.
"The Emergency Department is certainly lively today."
Just then, another voice came from behind the crowd. Shi Lei looked over and was startled to see Chief Director Chen Zhenxing and Deputy Director Li Mingwu standing at the back of the crowd.
