The Enhanced Doctor
Chapter 46: Did the critique meeting turn into a poaching meeting?

Chapter 46: Did the critique meeting turn into a poaching meeting?

Not many people were aware of the grudge between Qin Hai and Liu Banxia. After all, they were all people of status and truly didn’t have time for idle gossip.

Today, Qin Hai once again targeting Liu Banxia was somewhat beyond Zhou Zhiyong’s expectations. Hadn’t things been smoothed over last time? Why bring it up again?

However, just because few people knew didn’t mean no one did. Jiang Tao was one such person.

"Chief Director, since Liu Banxia has been mentioned, I do have some recollection of him. May I say a few words?" Jiang Tao asked with a smile.

Chen Zhenxing nodded.

"Honestly, I had no idea our Second Hospital had such a talented resident doctor. He performed a surgery in our proctology department, and it was flawless. He didn’t seem like a novice at all; he’s a promising prospect," Jiang Tao stated.

"Later, when he was changing dressings for patients in our proctology department, he became someone they eagerly awaited—more so than me, the department director. I invited him to join our proctology department, but he declined. He has high aspirations."

Listening to Jiang Tao, Qin Hai’s face darkened. Though Jiang Tao’s latter words sounded dismissive, he was actually supporting Liu Banxia. Could it be that Jiang Tao had gotten close to Banxia just because Banxia used to change dressings for his patients? Had Banxia given him some benefit?

"Liu Banxia? Let me think... isn’t he the one with somewhat messy hair and a dimple?" Cui Dongshan, Director of Pediatrics, also spoke up.

"Oh, Director Cui, you know him too?" Chen Zhenxing asked, surprised.

"I’m not afraid of you all laughing, but that young fellow caused quite a stir in our pediatrics department yesterday. You might find this amusing. I suppose most of you have heard about it, right?" f.r(e)e\webn.ovel.co\m

"Director Cui, I really don’t know. What did he do?" Zhou Shuwen asked with a wry smile.

"He got into an argument with Chen Dongyang from our department. It was due to his insistence during the argument that we re-examined the pediatric patient and diagnosed Tetralogy of Fallot," Cui Dongshan explained.

"He was the one who identified that child’s condition yesterday?" Li Mingwu interjected.

"Chief Director Li, you don’t mean to say... ah... no, he wouldn’t have the guts," Zhou Shuwen said, his words trailing off, but his supportive stance was clear.

Qin Hai felt his head buzzing. What on earth was going on? How did so many people know Liu Banxia?

"I know about the bare-handed hemostasis Director Qin mentioned. I happened to be on my way to my next surgery and saw him mopping the corridor," Li Mingwu added.

"I know about that incident. He showed up at my office door the very next morning, hoping I could help him stay in the Department of General Surgery. But I genuinely had no idea he’d also caused a stir in Pediatrics. The young man certainly has courage," Zhou Shuwen said.

"I also have a case related to him," Xiao Zhaoqiu chimed in.

Hearing this, Zhou Shuwen was at a loss for words. He had only been away for a conference and a few surgeries. How had Liu Banxia managed to stir up so much talk?

Qin Hai glanced at Xiao Zhaoqiu with a hint of desperation. He truly did not want to hear any more good news praising Liu Banxia.

"After his shift, he encountered a three-month-old baby laughing abnormally. He suspected gelastic seizures, brought the baby back for an MRI, and it turned out to be a hypothalamic hamartoma," Xiao Zhaoqiu continued.

This statement caused quite a stir.

How many was that now? An emergency C-section saving a baby, bare-handed hemostasis on another patient, and then identifying potential illnesses in two more infants through mere observation. Was this truly a resident doctor? Even some attending physicians might not possess such keen insight.

Qin Hai’s face turned ashen. He felt he had fired his shot too early. Now, with so many people refuting him, it felt as if his own cannonballs were being fired back, hitting him instead.

"This Liu Banxia seems quite interesting. He wouldn’t happen to have connections with other departments too, would he?" Chen Zhenxing asked with a smile.

"In a way, yes. I only figured out who it was from Director Cui’s description," Xu Peichen from the Orthopedics Department added.

"Yesterday afternoon, I treated a patient in the emergency department. After I performed a closed reduction, the patient unexpectedly developed rhabdomyolysis. Zhang Yun and this Liu Banxia performed the fasciotomy for decompression."

"I handled the subsequent treatment in the operating room; it was done very well. His performance was excellent, especially for a resident doctor in that situation. It left a very deep impression on me."

"Chief Director, I’ll say it again: I hope to have Liu Banxia join our proctology department," Jiang Tao interjected once more.

"I am very confident that if Liu Banxia joins us, our proctology department at Second Hospital could rival the provincial proctology specialty hospital. I’m even more confident we can increase our bed count to one hundred."

He had to speak up. He also hadn’t known Liu Banxia had interacted with these people. And from an objective standpoint, they clearly appreciated Liu Banxia’s responses and actions. Recruiting talent was already difficult. Liu Banxia’s heart was set on General Surgery. If he didn’t speak up now, it would be too late.

"Jiang Tao, I recall your proctology department hasn’t recruited anyone for three years, right?" Chen Zhenxing asked.

"That’s right. We’ve found a promising candidate this time. You must agree, Chief Director," Jiang Tao urged.

"Hmm, I think he’s too impulsive, restless, and resistant to discipline. He can first gain more experience in our Department of General Surgery; his foundational skills aren’t solid yet," Zhou Shuwen commented, somewhat reservedly.

Qin Hai’s heart turned cold. What on earth was happening? This was supposed to be a meeting to critique Liu Banxia; how had it turned into a recruitment fair for him?

Many others shared his thoughts. A mere resident doctor like Liu Banxia wouldn’t usually weigh heavily on the minds of these department directors and deputy directors. Now, their impression of Liu Banxia was that he was somewhat mischievous but seemed to have great potential.

Even someone as reserved as Zhou Shuwen had spoken up for him; in all the time they had known Zhou Shuwen, this was a first.

"Everyone, let’s quiet down. We’ve strayed a bit from the topic," Chen Zhenxing said with a smile, glancing at a downcast Qin Hai.

"We should now focus our attention on teaching and training. Teaching and training are among the crucial tasks our Second Hospital needs to diligently address."

"Everyone has a busy morning, so let’s concentrate on the tasks at hand. A new batch of resident doctors will be joining the hospital soon, and everyone can share their views then."

He hadn’t intended to conclude the regular meeting so early, but today’s proceedings had veered beyond his control. A single Liu Banxia had unexpectedly drawn support from so many people, something he hadn’t anticipated. He couldn’t yet determine if these individuals were supporting Liu Banxia out of animosity towards Qin Hai, or because they genuinely admired the young doctor.

Whatever the reason, some consideration had to be given to Qin Hai, who was nearing retirement. Taking care of senior colleagues was, after all, a commendable tradition.
