Chapter 39: 039 Sly Little Slicker

"What’s all this ruckus about? Be mindful of your positions. Everyone into my office."

Chen Hongyang was momentarily struck speechless by Liu Banxia’s retort. Before he could say anything further, Cui Dongshan, the director of the pediatrics department, spoke in a low, serious tone.

"Hello, Director Cui," Liang Xiaolin hurriedly greeted him.

Cui Dongshan glanced at them and then walked back into his office.

Liu Banxia had steeled himself for today; there was no turning back now. Even if Director Cui was protective of his own staff, Liu Banxia was determined to argue things out thoroughly.

"You’re all grown adults, yet you’re about to start squabbling like children in the street. What will the patients’ families think? Sit down, all of you. Tell me exactly what happened," Cui Dongshan said once they were inside.

"Director Cui, my name is Liu Banxia. I’ll stand, if you don’t mind. I’m the one who made a mistake. I was directly involved in today’s incident, so my account might not be entirely impartial. Let Doctor Liang explain," Liu Banxia said.

Cui Dongshan turned his gaze to Liang Xiaolin.

"Director Cui, we came to check on the baby delivered by C-section in the emergency room. Um... then Liu Banxia noticed another baby whose lips were slightly cyanotic," Liang Xiaolin said hesitantly.

"He thought the baby might have some health issues and consulted me. And then... I didn’t see anything wrong. He then became worried about a possible missed diagnosis, and that’s when Dr. Chen appeared."

"So, you’re Liu Banxia," Cui Dongshan said, glancing at Chen Hongyang before adding this meaningful remark.

"Director Cui, please let me speak. I know I’m just a resident doctor. In terms of medical skill, I can’t compare to Dr. Chen, and I’d rank near the bottom in our entire Second Hospital," Liu Banxia said.

"But Director Chen was being unreasonable. I even apologized to him, but he still accused me of being an imposter. That’s when I lost my temper, and we started arguing."

"What’s the specific situation with that child?" Cui Dongshan asked.

"Born at 38 weeks via C-section. At birth, the skin showed signs of cyanosis. By last night, it had returned to normal, with only minor symptoms on the lips. Auscultation revealed a systolic murmur, which I diagnosed as a physiological systolic murmur," Chen Hongyang explained.

"That’s not right. It wasn’t just the lips; the baby’s little hands and arms were also slightly cyanotic, though not as obviously as the lips," Liu Banxia interjected.

"You two change into sterile gowns as well, and we’ll go take a look together," Cui Dongshan said, standing up.

Liu Banxia didn’t really care. Things had already gone this far today; how much worse could it get? He might as well follow along; after all, he was just a resident physician.

After changing into sterilized gowns, Liu Banxia and Liang Xiaolin followed Cui Dongshan into the neonatal monitoring room. Chen Hongyang shot Liu Banxia a look, a contemptuous smirk playing on his lips.

Although he had his own reasons for picking a fight with Liu Banxia, Chen Hongyang had immense confidence in his diagnosis. He hadn’t become a deputy chief physician merely through seniority. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been put in charge of the neonatal monitoring room.

Cui Dongshan handed his stethoscope to Liu Banxia. "You listen first. You’re a doctor too."

Liu Banxia felt a bit awkward, but he wasn’t one to be intimidated. He put on the stethoscope and began listening to the heart sounds.

His skills were admittedly deficient; the only thing he could confirm was the presence of a murmur. As for whether the heart sounds were normal, he couldn’t tell.

However, he paid closer attention and noticed a few more details, which significantly calmed his nerves.

"Did you hear anything?" Cui Dongshan asked.

Liu Banxia honestly shook his head. "I didn’t hear any particularly abnormal heart sounds, just that there’s a murmur."

"Director Cui, although I might have said some excessive things today, I have great confidence in my diagnosis," Chen Hongyang stated.

"I have great faith in Dr. Chen’s judgment," Liu Banxia chimed in.

"Because I’m just a resident physician, and my expertise in this area is far inferior to Dr. Chen’s. I’d like to apologize to Dr. Chen here; I was out of line earlier."

Chen Hongyang’s contemptuous smirk widened. This was the outcome he had expected all along.

Cui Dongshan sighed internally. He thought highly of Chen Hongyang, but he’d been overly confident this time. As for Liu Banxia, he figured he was just a cunning little schemer.f\r(e)ewe.b no\vel.com

Even though Liu Banxia had clearly noticed something was wrong, he had still chosen to set another trap for Chen Hongyang. It was as if Liu Banxia had opened the bag, and Chen Hongyang had obligingly crawled right in.

"Let’s get an ECG and an echocardiogram for the baby," Cui Dongshan said nonchalantly.

"What?"

Hearing this, Chen Hongyang was utterly stunned. If the director was suggesting this, it definitely meant there was something wrong with the baby.

"The baby’s lips are still faintly purple. Take another look—isn’t the baby’s mouth opening a bit wider when it gasps for breath? I hope my assessment is wrong; it would be best if it’s not a congenital heart disease," Cui Dongshan said, his tone filled with resignation.

"Ah... it couldn’t be Tetralogy of Fallot, could it?" Liang Xiaolin also grew uneasy.

"We’ll have to wait for the test results. Liu Banxia, had you already diagnosed this?" Cui Dongshan asked.

Liu Banxia quickly shook his head. "I just noticed the baby was opening its mouth more frequently and thought there might be a breathing issue. Coupled with the heart murmur and cyanosis, it just felt like something wasn’t right."

"I was just making a wild guess. I’ve never encountered a case like this in my medical career. Director Cui, if it is confirmed, can such a small baby’s condition be corrected?"

"It’s hard to say right now. The baby is too small, and we don’t know how severe the actual condition is. Let’s get the tests done first. Hopefully, we’ll have time to help stabilize the baby’s condition," Cui Dongshan said and then walked out.

Liang Xiaolin looked at Liu Banxia in astonishment, then turned to look at the baby again. A deep sense of unease settled in her heart.

"Let’s go," Liu Banxia said softly, ignoring Chen Hongyang, who still stood by, looking dazed.

He (Liu Banxia) had experienced Liang Xiaolin’s current emotional turmoil before. For doctors, pregnant women and babies often strike the deepest chord.

After Uncle Jiang’s baby... he hadn’t dared to look at the child much, let alone go home with the family.

"I guess we make a pretty good team, huh? We delivered one together, and now we’ve found another baby with a potentially serious illness," Liu Banxia said after they stepped outside.

Perhaps his emotional intelligence had successfully recharged; he didn’t want to see the young woman so distressed.

"How can you be so lacking in sympathy? This is a newborn baby!" Liang Xiaolin exclaimed indignantly.

Liu Banxia didn’t get angry. "It’s not that I lack sympathy. I just brought in a baby with a hypothalamic hamartoma. Illness doesn’t discriminate. In our line of work, you have to be tough."

With that, Liu Banxia walked straight towards the elevator.

Liang Xiaolin was stunned. Only now did she understand why Liu Banxia had spoken that way earlier. But as for an apology, she really couldn’t bring herself to say the words; her initial impression of him was already quite bad, after all.

Back in the emergency room, he went to the information desk to collect his braised pork head meat, then headed home to rest.

As for the chicken leg, Zhou Li and her colleagues had already divided it amongst themselves. They certainly wouldn’t stand on ceremony with Liu Banxia.
