Chapter 38: 038 Battles with the Deputy Director (Request for Collection and Recommendation)

"Bastard, let go," Liang Xiaolin whispered, feeling utterly wronged.

"Quiet for a moment," Liu Banxia said. "Look at that baby, the one three cribs away in this row. Doesn’t something seem a bit off?"

Liang Xiaolin couldn’t care less about what he was saying; she was too overwhelmed by embarrassment and anxiety. She had even noticed the nurses looking over, their gazes seemingly carrying a peculiar meaning.

He’s definitely trying to take advantage of me! she thought firmly. He’s just a hooligan, I knew it from the moment I met him!

Just as the young woman had decided she had to fight back, even if it meant going all out, Liu Banxia suddenly released his hand and moved aside.

He hadn’t actually intended to take advantage of Liang Xiaolin just then; she had more or less "walked right into his net," so to speak. However, as his gaze shifted up and then down again, he inadvertently noticed the baby’s lips looked abnormal—they were somewhat cyanotic.

Now that he was a little closer, he could see more clearly. It wasn’t just the lips; the baby’s tiny, flailing hands also had a slight bluish tinge.

DING! New Task: Cyanotic Baby.

Open-ended Task: The baby is suspected of having an underlying condition. The host is requested to make a diagnosis. Task rewards will be issued based on the diagnostic results.

Even though he had already completed two similar tasks—one concerning Wang Mingxing’s eyes and another about the baby who loved to laugh—he was still hesitant now.

He was a general surgeon, not a pediatrician. He really wasn’t very clear on what signs newborns should exhibit. Even if he had studied it, learning something didn’t mean you’d mastered it.

This wasn’t the general surgery or emergency department ward; he had no authority here whatsoever. They all had to peer in from outside; there wasn’t even a chance to go in.

"I don’t think there’s anything wrong," Liang Xiaolin said, also looking carefully when she saw Liu Banxia wasn’t joking.

"It’s a little better now," Liu Banxia said. "But if you compare carefully, there’s still a hint of cyanosis. It’s just not very obvious."

Liang Xiaolin looked closely. It does seem like there’s a hint of it, doesn’t it?

"Do you think we could go in for a closer look? At least to listen to the heart sounds," Liu Banxia suggested, hesitating a bit.

"If you want to get yourself killed, don’t drag me into it. I’m not as brave as you," Liang Xiaolin retorted without even thinking. fre(e)webnove.l.c.om

"Ah, I was just saying," Liu Banxia said, a little worried. "But I keep feeling like the baby’s condition is a bit abnormal. Could it be that the doctors here missed something?"

"Every baby admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit is carefully monitored by us."

The words had barely left his mouth when a cold male voice came from behind him. He quickly turned around and saw a doctor standing there, the name tag reading: Chen Hongyang, Associate Chief Physician.

"Dr. Chen, I’m very sorry," Liu Banxia said hurriedly. "I just saw it and said something offhand."

Chen Hongyang looked at him. "This baby was a C-section at 38 weeks gestation. Besides being slightly cyanotic, there’s also a heart murmur. It’s a physiological systolic murmur; it will disappear as the child grows older."

"Don’t think you’re so great just because you assisted Director Zhou in one surgery. Stop putting on airs. If you’ve got nothing to do, don’t hang around our department."

After saying his piece, Chen Hongyang took out his card and swiped it to open the door to the neonatal intensive care unit.

"You stop right there! Make yourself clear before you go!" Liu Banxia shouted, startling the nurses passing by in the corridor.

If this had been in the past, he would have had to meekly accept it, even if an attending physician had berated him. Although a hospital wasn’t the army, the hierarchy was just as strict.

As a resident doctor with no backing or connections to rely on, he could only live cautiously and keep his head down.

But things were different now. Although he hadn’t reached the level of a nouveau riche, he had gained some confidence. This shout seemed to expel all his past frustrations, and it felt incredibly liberating.

"Which attending physician are you under? Such lack of manners!" Chen Hongyang was also furious.

"Does it matter who I’m under?" Liu Banxia said disdainfully. "You accuse me of putting on airs, but your own ’tail’ is much bigger than mine! So, being an Associate Chief Physician makes you all that, huh? You look down on us resident doctors? Is Second Hospital too small to contain your ego?"

"You’re spouting nonsense! When did I say I look down on resident doctors?" Chen Hongyang quickly added, noticing that people were paying attention.

"Of course, a big-shot Associate Chief Physician like yourself wouldn’t say it outright," Liu Banxia retorted, not giving him any face at all. "So, we resident doctors are just a dish for you, huh? You take a couple of bites when you feel like it, and when you don’t, you have someone else throw us in the trash?"

"Damn it, if I knew everything, why would I still be a damn resident doctor? I’m a resident doctor in general surgery; I’m even less clear about pediatrics. When I saw the baby’s lips were cyanotic, I naturally got a little worried."

"What crap are you talking? Saying I’m putting on airs? Your ’tail’ is definitely bigger than mine. What are you looking at? Just because there’s a shortage of pediatricians now, you think you’re so high and mighty? A person like you... tsk, tsk. What would happen if you became a chief physician? I really wonder if the resident doctors under you would have to scrub your toilets at home."

Liu Banxia shook his head, a look of pity on his face, and with his hands behind his back, he made to leave this place of conflict. He had certainly spoken his mind, letting off a full barrage.

After he’d let it all out, he also regretted it.

He didn’t just run off; it was a matter of pride—maintaining composure even in defeat. Since it’s already come to this, would bowing my head and admitting I’m wrong actually change the outcome?

Liang Xiaolin, standing to the side, was stunned. She never would have thought Liu Banxia would just go for it like that; the other party was an Associate Chief Physician, after all! And the key thing was, although what he said was crude, it actually sounded quite reasonable.

"You, stop right there!" This time, it was Chen Hongyang who shouted.

In his own turf, the pediatrics department, he had never been provoked like this.

"You explain yourself clearly! Who’s backing you up, making you so arrogant?" Chen Hongyang roared after Liu Banxia turned back.

"My reason is backing me up," Liu Banxia said calmly. "Can’t you speak properly? What’s with all the loaded remarks? Did I offend you or provoke you?"

"My patient, I will naturally give a comprehensive diagnosis," Chen Hongyang said. "I listened to the heart sounds, and the diagnosis is a physiological systolic murmur. The baby is so young right now; it’s not appropriate for excessive examinations, nor is it appropriate for the patient to spend extra money on unnecessary issues."

"So, a brain is a good thing," Liu Banxia drawled. "You have one, but you just don’t know how to use it."

"I was just looking from outside, discussing the issue with Liang Xiaolin, a fellow resident doctor. You couldn’t stand to hear that? What kind of logic is that? So, we don’t even have the right to think about it or discuss it?"

Impulse is the devil, Liu Banxia knew he had been controlled by that devil for a moment. But right now, he didn’t feel scared; on the contrary, he felt even more liberated.

Resident doctors are people too, not some little servants that anyone can just curse at! Since I’ve already opened fire, I might as well make it a good one!

Liang Xiaolin was dumbfounded. What is this guy talking about? What does it have to do with me? Why did he drag me into this?
