Chapter 176: Fractures and Fury
Chapter 176: Fractures and Fury
"Unlike you."
After finishing, the Elf King’s eyes flashed with another glint of disdain.
Sebastian saw it clearly. That single look made him flare up like a firecracker.
You son of a—!
"Spare me your crap," Sebastian snapped. "As if Illiya would stay here and catch you. Please. If he saw you here, he’d figure out half of what’s going on. I’d love to see how you plan to explain everything. It’s not like I don’t know what kind of person you are."
"I really don’t get you. You ask me to handle all the uncertain variables, and then you go and make things even more complicated for your own kin. For what? Is this what it means to be the leader of the elven race? Look at us, at least we don’t mess with the Demon King like that."
"There’s absolutely no need to go through all this trouble. All we had to do was—"
He didn’t get to finish. The Elf King interrupted again, "...Sebastian, with the way you’re acting, I’m seriously starting to wonder if you are my student instead of Illiya. Your whining really gives me strange illusions. I suggest you reflect on yourself a bit. You’re being very strange today."
Sebastian: ...
"Screw you!!!"
After their back-and-forth the Elf King’s expression finally turned serious and the levity in his tone vanished.
"Let’s not continue that thought. It’s not the right time to say anything further. Sebastian, you know well what can and cannot be said. I have my reasons for doing this. What Illiya is about to go through is something he must face. We cannot interfere in his life. That would be unfair to him. No one has the right to alter Illiya’s destiny, except Illiya himself."
Sebastian understood the gravity of this and didn’t press the matter further.
Suddenly remembering something, his expression grew a little complicated. "...So that’s why you asked me to stop that dark elf? You’re really not afraid he’ll go off and do something reckless?"
The Elf King chuckled nonchalantly. "I’m confident that particular dark elf won’t do such a thing."
"All because he’s Illiya’s soul-bonded partner?" Sebastian shot back.
Sometimes, he really couldn’t understand the logic of these elves.
Just because someone was a ’soul-bonded partner’ didn’t mean they couldn’t do something terrible.
The Elf King shook his head, denying it. "No, I’m not saying that a soul-bonded partner would never do anything wrong. What I’m saying is that this dark elf would never do anything that would harm Illiya. He’s the one exception. After all, he even dare to performed a time reversal spell. On some level, this dark elf is quite a ruthless person. Fortunately, he’s successfully been trapped inside a cage."
"It’s just really strange," Sebastian muttered, no longer pursuing the topic of "soul-bonded partners." Just as elves couldn’t understand why demons were so devoted to the Demon King, he couldn’t comprehend the full meaning of the bond between light and dark elves.
"What I’m curious about is—how did you know that this dark elf have used time reversal spell?"
The Elf King had expected some kind of suspicion, but this was it?
He was speechless. "Sometimes, I really feel like you’re missing basic common sense. Didn’t you notice the obvious traces of time lingering around that dark elf? It’s as if he wandered for a long time within the river of time. Though I don’t know the exact reason, he did go back to the past. And now, he’s trying to change fate. That’s an incredibly difficult thing to do. But luckily, fate can always be changed. That’s the one fortunate thing in all this."
Sebastian, having been scolded, rubbed his nose. For once, he actually felt a little embarrassed. "You know I’m not familiar with time magic. But I did sense something strange about the dark elf’s soul. Although it’s highly compatible with the body, they don’t fuse together properly. The vessel is too young, while the soul is ancient—it’s very odd."
The Elf King sighed lightly, and for the first time, his face took on a troubled expression.
"I first noticed that the dark elf’s soul and body weren’t in sync. That led me to realize the disorder of time surrounding him. Kids these days are just too hard to manage. They’re always doing dangerous things, without any regard for whether their actions might put their lives at risk. Changing fate isn’t exactly rare, but if the method used is wrong, it can result in irreversible consequences."
"So that’s why you asked me to stop the dark elf from revealing what he knows about the ’future’?" Sebastian finally understood.
Being a guardian really wasn’t easy.
The Elf King gave a weary smile, deeply empathetic. "If it weren’t for the fact that he meant well, I wouldn’t have done all this. I’ve said enough. It’s time to end this call. The fact that you’re still able to calmly talk to me proves that everything is ready on your end. So, goodbye."
As soon as he finished speaking, the Elf King unilaterally ended the communication.
In front of Sebastian, only a transparent "mirror" remained, and nothing more. But even that mirror began to disintegrate and dissolve into the air.
This was a one-way communication spell array, once one party ended the call, the array would also vanish.
Sebastian: "..."
He still hated elves the most!
Being Mocked, berated, hung up on, Sebastian was brimming with unspent frustration, suffocating with resentment, and he had no idea how to deal with it.
He couldn’t take it out on His Majesty the Demon King.
He couldn’t take it out on his lifelong rival’s student, who was still just a kid.
And if he vented on his fellow frustrated colleagues, all he’d get would be an infuriating chorus of "Yeah, yeah, right, whatever."
So then, what could he do that wouldn’t hurt his own people but would let him release this pent-up rage?
Obviously, beat the crap out of the enemy.
Once he reached that conclusion, Sebastian quietly withdrew the original plans he had sent out.
