Chapter 77: Holding a grudge

Bree raised her head and looked at Yakov who was standing on the threshold of her office, today he was dressed in a dashing vintage white suit with one that has a long tail, the collar reached up to his throat making him look like he was some sort of Viscount of something. And with his emerald green hair that was tied in a long ponytail with assorted accessories, Bree has to say he looked good if only he wasn’t scowling like he stepped in a pile of cow dung.

" Do you think that we are having fun?" she asked with a casual voice, though she still didn’t trust either of the four consorts. She has dropped her guard around Yakov and Ahmar a little, the latter because he well did not seem he has any intentions of killing her now, last night she was sleeping next to him, and with Saphira still recovering from whatever the previous Queen had done, he had more than one opportunities to kill her but he didn’t and as for Yakov, he was the one who warned her and helped her in saving Ahmar on time.

Yakov looked around the office and his gaze fell on Dion who swallowed with a loud ’ Ahem’, and then Bree swore Dion was looking at Yakov like he was a student who has been caught creating noise in the classroom by his teacher, something that sort of amused her, was Yakov that scary? He didn’t look like that but then again this wolf shifter was fully capable of ripping her throat apart if he wanted. " By the loud giggles and laugh? I think yes."

" Yakov," she called, shaking her head as she returned her attention to the document that she was working at. " Just because we were sharing a short laugh doesn’t mean that we are having fun, just look at the pile of documents that we have in front of us, we were just taking a small break to get our minds back on track, nothing else."

Bree didn’t know what she was even bothering herself with by explaining why she and Dion were laughing but seeing Yakov’s glare and Dion’s expression that screamed ’ I was on my best behaviour, I swear’, she couldn’t help but speak up. She was afraid that if she didn’t then Dion might have a hard time when her back was turned.

" Yup," said Dion hurriedly looking in the opposite direction of the room under the pressure of Yakov’s glare that was directed at him. " Exactly, as your majesty said." And then he widened his eyes and made a ’say a bit more’ gesture at Bree who understood his plea for help.

" We have been working for hours and you might have already heard about what happened in the court," It was a hellish nightmare to be exact, I think I and Dion deserved this small laugh to help us put in a good mood, you see?" Why she was even doing it? It made her look like she was a precious, little wife—— one who put on a delicate smile and placated her husband. Why in the world was she doing the placating?

" I see, so you two have just shared a laugh," Yakov kicked off the wall he was leaning against and then strode inside the room with a slow, deliberate pace as if he wanted to irk her nerves, before coming to stop next to her and placed a hand on her shoulder, this one move was enough to kind of let loose an unnerving flutter in her belly making goosebumps break all over her skin. He was so close that she could smell his prim and proper scent——White tea, rainwater and chocolate fudge, causing her heartbeat to kick up a pace, and Bree’s hand damn near trembled under that charming scent.

Now that she wasn’t looking at the two of them with a judgmental gaze, she could more or less come to appreciate how good they looked.

" Yeah, maybe you and I don’t have the same ideas when it comes to taking a break," she said with forced casualness as she tried to act as casual as she wished she did but then again it only made her look even more dubious.

" Really? Maybe you are right, your majesty" Yakov leaned down knowing that he wasn’t just holding fire but playing with it all together but he couldn’t stop himself. He enclosed the space between the two of them and then he murmured in her ear, " I do think that we have different ideas about taking a break but mine is one that we both might enjoy a little more your majesty."

Bree almost felt the shiver that danced down her spine as she swallowed hard and clenched her fingers before trying to suppress the tingle she was feeling. " What are you here for?"

Yakov pulled away as if he wasn’t flirting with her a second ago, Bree caught the disappointment on the face of Dion who seemed to have been enjoying the rare, shiny moment where the Queen and her consort were talking nicely without lunging at each other throat. " I heard about what happened earlier this morning and came to see you, your majesty, I didn’t wish to interfere in that little break of yours, but since the situation calls for us to treat us with gravity, I did not have any other option left."

" You are going to hold that one against me, won’t you?" said Bree with one of her brows raised, sounding bemused at Yakov’s inclination of talking about the small laugh that she shared with Dion.

" I don’t know what you are talking about your majesty," he said with a flicker of a smile on his lips but those hard glimmers in his eyes told her that he was going to hold it against her for a long time.

Bree wrinkled her nose at him. " Fine, you can hold that tiny grudge as long as you want... I won’t say anything."

" I am not holding a grudge, your majesty."

" Say that after taking care of that cute little pout that’s playing on your lips."
