Chapter 67: Where did that money go?
Bree banged her fist on the armrest of the throne causing a loud bang to echo around the throne room, the ministers all looked at her in stunned silence and sucked in a breath when they saw the fury burning in Bree’s eyes. " What do you take this place for? A fish market or your mommy’s kitchen where you believe shouting like this won’t get in you in trouble? Who do you think is sitting in front of you all? Is this how a bunch of officials are supposed to behave in front of their queen?"
The silence that fell inside the throne room was loud enough to be heard as the ministers all looked at Bree and then exchanged a glance with each other before one of them hesitated and stepped forward with an air of false bravado. " Your majesty, it’s not like that we want to be noisy but we do deserve an explanation——"
" On what basis?" asked Bree completely portraying the tyrant Queen, she wanted to be understanding and give the ministers all a chance to say their side but now only did she realise that the Queen was right in treating them like they were a bunch of kindergarten kids locked in the body of old men. She has been trying to reason out with them nicely for minutes and they have been going on and on as if she wasn’t even present in the throne room—— she finally understood that it wasn’t that the Queen didn’t want to listen to her ministers, it was them who just won’t listen to a thing that she had to say, so she stopped explaining her actions.
She swept her glowing amber eyes at the ministers standing at the foot of her throne, her slitted irises narrowing ever so in annoyance. " Just because I have become a bit reasonable does not mean that I am no longer the same Queen who can and who will throw you in the prison if you all cross your lines, with what takes are you questioning my decisions? Just because you all are older than me have you really started to take yourselves as my elders? I have been trying to speak to you all for minutes and all you have been doing is cutting me off, have you forgotten what’s the punishment for interrupting your Queen?"
There was no answer from the ministers, so she turned to Dion and said, " They don’t seem to know what is the punishment of interrupting me, tell them."
Dion bowed his head as he replied, " Anyone cutting you off your majesty, will have their tongue cut off from their mouth."
" You hear that?" said Bree as she turned to look at her ministers and said, " If you don’t want to have your tongue cut off, then shut up and listen to me."
All the ministers pursed their lips in silence it seemed as if they were trying to hold back everything that they wanted to say and then looked at Bree without saying anything.
Bree nodded her head in approval as she said, "it’s a good thing that you all can at least understand what I am saying, or else there is no need for you to be here." She placed her hands on the throne’s armrest and continued, " I do not have any need to tell you what happened, nor do I have to give you all an explanation but still I am here willing to say a few words if you all just listen to me silently. What happened with Duke Cilantro’s request is nothing but an attempt to discredit the throne and I, your Queen for I never agreed to his request. If you all will just open your eyes and read the document carefully that’s being circulated around, you will see that it hasn’t been signed but stamped alone, something that should have been struck suspicious to all of you without me speaking out loud."
" But your majesty it doesn’t mean that the document is not legalised, when signing a document its the stamp of the royal family that’s more important, even more than your signature——"
" So basically, you all are doubting me that I am saying this to defend myself?" Bree could understand what the ministers were trying to say they were trying to discredit her by calling her a ’liar’ in the roundabout way, weren’t they?
Her eyes narrowed as she sneered, " Do you all think that I do not understand what you all are trying to say to me?"
" We are just worried about our people, your majesty—— this situation it does not matter how it arose, the only thing that matters is that Duke Cilantro has imposed heavy taxes. Everyone knows that his territory is the only one that allows export and import, if he does not remove those heavy taxes then how will we answer the people of our territory?"
" Worried about the people of your territory?" chuckled Bree as she leaned back on her throne, she wanted to leave some face to her ministers given they were older and wiser than her but now the more she looked at them, the more it seemed like they were nothing but a bunch of greedy fools. " I am well aware of what you all are worried about, all right Duke Murphy, you don’t have to try and fool me with your pretty words."
With her clenched fists under her chin, she looked at the ministers and smiled, " You asked the Royal court to forgive the debt you owed the royal family because apparently, you wanted to build a countless number of an orphanage for the orphans in your territory, so where is the account book of that orphanage? Why haven’t I ever seen or heard you mention that orphanage ever since the debt was forgiven, huh Duke?"
Duke Murphy’s face turned purple upon the mention of the orphanage because he knew better than anyone what he did with the money that was supposed to pay off his debts.
He pocketed it all! So where will, the orphanage record will come from?
