Chapter 39: Her change.
Bree drew in a breath as she looked at Yakov, he wanted to believe that he was just lying to her, was trying to say sweet words to make her lay her guard down but she couldn’t do it. Not when he was looking at her with that serious expression of his without any twinkle in his eyes or any teasing glint in them. His voice reeked off nothing but sincerity and Bree couldn’t help but suck in a shaky breath as she took his hand in hers.
A subtle zap went through between them as soon as she touched his hand but Bree ignored it as she ignored the hungry and possessive gaze with which Yakov was looking at her, because she knew he wasn’t looking at her but the shell she was occupying and honestly, she has never been a fan of love that started with physical intimacy. She was romantic and believed more in heart-to-heart conversation and laying their walls down before walking to that stage where she was willing to share her body with anyone.
And Yakov clearly was seeing nothing more than this body of hers that her soul was occupying.
Yakov stared at Bree as she took his hand and led him to the lounger before pulling him next to her, he would be lying if he said that he was not surprised because he was —— Bree had hurt him a millionth of times before, there was one time when she threw an inkpot on his forehead because he failed to satisfy her arrangements as the chancellor of the country and yet Bree has never cared about him even back then she ordered him to kneel on the ground of her palace with blood dripping down his forehead.
Fortunately, he was an alpha and his shifter healing was really fast so he was able to get past that ordeal without losing his life because he lost too much blood. If he was an omega, he surely would have died by now.
But now, that same woman was blowing on his fingers that were slightly burnt and was carefully holding his hand while applying the cooling ointment for burns. His eyes flickered as his heart started to feel a bit itchy and something warm and bubbly oozed in his chest, frowning he rubbed the spot where his heart was thumping wildly and looked at Bree. Why was it that she looked even more beautiful to him now?
She was still the same as ever, cold... unbothered and didn’t seem to have the slightest bit of care for him but as he watched her dark raven locks veiling half of her face and those half-lidded beautiful golden eyes that always had a murderous intent within them carefully assessing his fingers with a bit of guilt and worry, he couldn’t help but think that maybe his mate has gotten a bit more beautiful... but how?
What changed? Though he always felt something for Bree but this was the time he was feeling that itchiness in his heart as he looked at her.
Before he knew it, he raised his hand and brushed Bree’s hair away from her face—— lightly skimming her face as he did do so. His tender actions caused both of them to pause as Bree let go of his hand and awkwardly looked away. " I think this much is enough, you can ... you can ask Aileen to clean up the rest for you."
Bree tucked the locks of her hair behind her ear and felt like she has lost her mind. She actually applied balm on the hand of the man who was supposed to be her murderer! If she hadn’t taken away his powers from him, maybe he would have killed her without any regret as he said—— his pride was hurt because of the actions of the previous owner of this body and just like the example of her father who killed his concubine because of a single affair, he would have killed her too without even blinking his eyes.
Yet here she was feeling sympathy for him? Even applying ointment over his burns like some lovey-dovey husband and wife. Someone come and slap her awake, what in the world was wrong with her?
Yakov stared at his hand that was treated exceptionally well and then looked at Bree whose face was flushing red as for why she was blushing he didn’t know. All he knew was she looked quite adorable like that, he raised his hand and brushed his fingers on her reddened cheek causing Bree to stiffen and look at him. " What are you doing?"
" When I heard that you sent Ahmar to the black tower, I thought it was something that he deserved but now," he tilted his head and pulled his hands away before brushing his lips on the back of those fingers that touched her cheek. " I understand that he wasn’t at fault for whatever he did, if you showed such an adorable side of yours to him like you are showing me, then I am not surprised that he crossed the line with you your majesty because that’s what I want to do."
Bree didn’t understand half of what he meant by ’adorable side’ but she understood one thing for sure and that was Yakov was thinking about doing something nasty to her. She hurriedly stood up from her spot and said, " I think that this is enough, I still have work to do. So, I am afraid I cannot entertain first consort anymore." However, just as she tried to walk past Yakov, the latter reached out and clasped her wrist.
" You—-"
" Do you know that the black tower is where we punish the traitors, your majesty?" asked Yakov all of a sudden as he too stood up and looked at her imperiously.
She frowned as she tugged her wrist free and this time Yakov let her go without stopping her. " Of course, I know that."
" Then your majesty might also know that without your protection, the second consort might not be treated as you are expecting him to be," said Yakov as he sincerely looked at her before raising his fingers that she just treated. " If I haven’t seen you getting worried over such a small injury of mine, I would have thought that you really wanted to hurt Ahmar but now that I have seen with my eyes. I think —— you should take the second consort out before it’s too late, your majesty."
