Chapter 288: Lingering aftermath
"Is Her Majesty doing alright?" Blaise stepped inside Bree’s bedroom; anger was radiating from every pore of his body as he looked at the woman lying on the bed. He turned his head and glanced at Yakov before saying to him, "I thought that you had dealt with that woman? Why was she at the banquet and why did she cause trouble for her majesty?"
This was something that Yakov was investigating as well. He had asked the hosts of the banquet but the man was just as confused as him; he had clearly not invited Lady Evelyn but somehow that woman appeared in his banquet and caused trouble.
Though the hosts of the banquet apologised and promised that they would let others know about Lady Evelyn breaking into the banquet, Yakov was quite certain that the ministers wouldn’t care about such a little thing. Instead, they would divert all their attention to Bree.
The queen had lost her temper and attacked a woman. Even though she was just a human and Lady Evelyn must have provoked her, it would be seen as a loss in the demeanour of the ruler. Yakov felt his head hurt at the very thought of how many memoranda and complaints would be sent to the court tomorrow morning.
Yakov felt a headache coming at the very thought of the state his desk would be in the morning. But more than that, he was worried what others would think about Bree.
The loss of control over her dragon wouldn’t be seen just as a mistake.
Cian had finished pouring the healing energy into Bree’s body. He pursed his lips and asked, "How can such a thing happen? Her majesty might be ruthless but she would never lose her temper like this even if she was provoked."
"Maybe it has something to do with the lingering drugs in her body," Yakov suggested with a dangerous note in his voice. He knew that those drugs were dangerous but Bree had never—not once listened to him.
"The drugs?" Ahmar raised his head. He was standing in the dark corner of the room with his arms resting on the front. When he heard Yakov’s suggestion, his eyes flickered and he turned to look at Blaise. "Did Her Majesty ever ask for potions to drain out the drugs from her body?"
Blaise’s face was paler than the moon shining outside. He shook his head and replied, "No, Her Majesty never asked for it. I thought that as she is a dragon shifter —"
BANG!
"So, you just left the matter without checking? Why didn’t you check up on her?" Ahmar questioned angrily. His voice sounded dangerous even to himself.
"I didn’t expect this to happen either." Blaise’s expression turned ugly. Back then, he didn’t have much expectation from Bree and was slightly annoyed by her actions as well. Thus, he didn’t pay attention to her sudden changes. If Ahmar and Yakov hadn’t brought the matter up, he would have even forgotten about it.
Only now did he recall that he had never sent any potions to Bree.
"Third consort, how can —"
"Enough!" Yakov raised his head and turned to look at the two bickering men. He said to them, "Do you think this is the time for you to be making chaos like this? Your mate is lying on the bed, unconscious, if I might add. Maybe just maybe put her first for the first time in your life."
Ahmar turned and smiled at the man with a hint of anger in his eyes. He questioned, "And you think you have the right to question us?"
"What’s that supposed to mean?"
"What do you think I mean?" Ahmar slowly shifted on his feet such that he was looking at Yakov completely and stated, "Her Majesty asked you to deal with the mess and you said that you had dealt with it but you didn’t. Which was the reason why that woman snuck inside the ball and then caused trouble for our mate. Do you think this is funny? Because I sure as hell don’t."
Yakov raised his foot. It seemed as if he was about to lunge at Ahmar but then he swallowed hard and stopped in his place. He knew what Ahmar said was indeed correct. If he had taken the matter of Lady Evelyn much more seriously, then nothing like this would have happened.
At least Bree would be in a much better state than she was at the moment.
"Everyone needs to calm down." Cian finally couldn’t help but speak when he saw that the situation was slowly turning bad. He looked at the three men and said to them in a calm voice, "Right now is not the time to blame one another. Now that the situation has escalated to this point, what do you think we should do at this moment?"
Cian was worried that the minister wouldn’t sit still. Now that they had leverage over the queen, they would simply cause trouble by asking Bree to leave the throne, as she didn’t have an heir at the moment. Who knows who would take over the crown if the ministers were to start rebelling?
As soon as he finished speaking, the entire room turned silent once again.
Just now the three men were still quibbling loudly but now they didn’t dare to even breathe.
"I will deal with them." Yakov felt disgraced at the thought that a little Omega was able to ride on his head. When he thought about how Lady Evelyn had promised that she would no longer cause any trouble but still went behind him and caused his mate to lose control, he felt a burning sense of humiliation.
He couldn’t deal with Lady Evelyn but that didn’t mean that he couldn’t deal with those officials and ministers either.
His eyes narrowed and he turned to look at Blaise before saying to him, "Check up on her majesty. If possible, try to deal with the aftermath of the lingering drugs in her body."
