The Dragon Queen and her mates.

Chapter 287: Lost control

However, Bree still stayed calm. Even though her Dragon believed that the solution to this problem was to silence this woman for once and for all, Bree didn’t want to shed any blood.

"Is that right?" Bree smiled sweetly. "Well, if that’s what makes you sleep better at night, then you can make me the villain in your story as you like, Lady Evelyn." Her lies wouldn’t shake the foundation of the throne; Bree wasn’t going to lose her temper with a woman who had lost her mind to obsession.

"He would have been happier if he had imprinted on me." This time around, Saphira growled in indignation. No matter what the situation was, that man was her mate and another woman’s claims of making him happy was making Saphira really unhappy.

Saphira was urging Bree to lunge at Lady Evelyn and take a bite of her throat. Since the woman was serving her head on a silver platter for them to take, then they shouldn’t need to shy away from her.

But Bree maintained a deadpan expression at Lady Evelyn’s provocation. "I will thank you for caring so much about my mate’s happiness, Lady Evelyn. But unless he is into shameless, vindictive, lying women who spread rumours like she is breathing. I do not believe that my first consort would be interested in you, Lady Evelyn."

Lady Evelyn’s face turned pale as paper as she looked at the woman in front of her with a hateful look in her eyes. She knew that it wouldn’t be that easy to make the queen and the first consort separate from one another but she still curled her lips and said to Bree, "Well, you are right about one thing— I am indeed a lying, vindictive woman."

As she finished speaking, she raised her hand and slapped herself harshly on the face. When Bree looked at the woman in complete surprise, Lady Evelyn chuckled and said, "I will show you what a lying woman can do, Your Majesty. I wonder what would happen to your reputation once I let others know that you have raised your hands on me because you were jealous and worried that I would snatch your mate from you. It will be quite a story to tell, don’t you think?" Lady Evelyn asked with a sickly sweet voice as she scrunched up her nose and looked at Bree with a teasing smile.

That was when Bree’s rationality snapped and Saphira lunged to the surface with extreme force.

Yakov was talking with one of the ministers when he felt that there was something wrong at the moment. There was a sudden rush of anger and frustration that rose in his veins before engulfing him completely. He knew this feeling; even if Yakov was burnt into ashes, he would still recognise this feeling.

He turned on his feet and excused himself, then without a thought he rushed to the balcony where Bree had gone just a few minutes ago.

It was only then that Yakov noticed a long crowd in front of the balcony, which stunned him. What was going on? He caught bits and pieces of the conversation that was going on among the onlookers.

"I heard that they were arguing —"

"I still think that Lady Evelyn went a tad bit too far."

"Why do you still blame the poor woman? From what I can see, if the queen doesn’t stop hitting that woman, she would soon die of blood loss."

"It was her fault for provoking the Empress!"

"Brianna," Yakov suddenly felt annoyed and flustered. Why were there so many people stopping him from reaching his mate?

He pushed a few ministers before shouting, "Get out of here." ’

And they did. However, just as Yakov rushed onto the balcony, all the air left his lungs as he turned to look at Bree, who was being hugged by Ahmar from behind. The man was sporting a hideous gash on his arm and pleading in a soft voice, "You can do this, my queen. You can fight the control of your beast, so please —calm down."

Only then did Yakov notice that Bree’s eyes were a brilliant shade of burning amber, she was looking at Lady Evelyn as if she was looking at a dying woman. When he saw the look in the dragon’s eyes, he shuddered because she was filled with distrust and anger.

It was not a surprise.

Saphira had been betrayed by not only her closest aides but also her mates in a way, which made it obvious why the dragon was filled with rage at the pure taunts of Lady Evelyn.

He heard Ahmar growl as he tried to dominate Bree but he was doing it wrong.

The woman was a freaking dragon. The queen of all the shifters, it would be a surprise if she would give into his command.

The second Ahmar stopped growling, Bree started thrashing against him, which showed that she had taken him as a potential threat as well. Realising this, Yakov rushed over and called a servant, "What are you doing? Take this woman away!"

He motioned the servants to take Lady Evelyn away before turning to look at Bree, who was still growling at the woman. When she saw the servants trying to reach out and take her prey, the dragon within roared.

"Your majesty!" Yakov stepped in front of Bree and he knew that his action was nothing but foolish on his part but he needed to calm his mate down. "Bree, I know you can hear me. I know that you can fight and control your dragon so please—I know that whatever Lady Evelyn has done has stepped on your bottom line but you should fight this, your majesty."

"That’s right, your majesty," Ahmar was panting with the sheer effort of keeping the woman in control. "We need you to fight harder for us."

"Concentrate on us, your majesty."

"Come on, your majesty. We know you can do this."

And very slightly, the woman’s struggles eased before she completely went limp.
