Chapter 285: Start of trouble

Chapter 285: Start of trouble

"Your Highness, thank you for blessing our family with your presence." A short, plump man looked at Bree with a smile on his face. He was wearing a tailcoat that was having quite a hard time fluttering like the rest.

"There is no need to thank me, Lord Gareth." Bree glanced at the man with a tiny frown on her face. "However, are you sure that you will be fine in the next military training?"

Lord Gareth had been working as the military strategist for quite some time, but looking at the man, Bree wondered if she was at the long place.

"Ahem, I am sorry for showing you such a disgrace, Your Majesty." Lord Gareth looked down at his plump figure and chuckled softly. "I have been staying indoors mostly due to my wife’s pregnancy; maybe I have gained a little weight."

A little was surely undermining the changes that the man had gone through. Bree’s eyes narrowed as she nodded and walked past the man, with Yakov and Ahmar following her closely. The three were invited to the celebratory banquet of Lord Gareth’s firstborn.

Usually, Bree didn’t bother with such banquets, but this one was certainly different as Lord Gareth was a war hero, and if she refused to attend, then others would say that she was looking down on the military personnel when they were the ones who helped her win the wars.

Bree had no choice but to attend the banquet.

She said to Ahmar, "Pay attention to the meals of the high-ranking ministers in the army."

As soon as she finished speaking, Ahmar, who stood next to him, paused. He turned and raised a brow before asking, "You think there is something wrong with Lord Gareth’s health?"

"There is nothing wrong with gaining weight, but if a person gains so much weight in a few months. I think there is something wrong with him. He just stayed indoors for two months, maybe three at most, when his wife’s pregnancy got closer and closer to the due date."

"Don’t you think that it is a bit weird that he gained tons in just a few months? Unless he was doing nothing but eating every second... I don’t think such a weight gain is possible."

As much as Ahmar wanted to say that Bree was thinking too much, he knew in his heart that there was indeed something weird about the sudden changes in Lord Gareth.

He nodded and agreed, "Sure, your majesty. I will keep an eye on the army rations and meals." Now that they were being surrounded by enemies from all sides, he dared not take such matters lightly.

Yakov didn’t butt in the conversation as this matter was related to the army. He glanced around the banquet hall and remarked in a light-hearted voice, "It seems like Lord Gareth is quite happy with the birth of the young heir?"

"Of course he is," Ahman nodded. "This is his first child. You might not know this, but Lord Gareth is the only one in the army who doesn’t have a child at his age. Because of this, he had to listen to a lot of taunts that were not pleasant. Now that this child is here, he is certainly quite happy."

He then turned to look at Bree before questioning, "Don’t you think it was unfair to him, your majesty?"

"Certainly."

"I knew you would understand me, your majesty." Ahmar sighed before remarking in a low voice, "I also receive certain taunts at times because of the lack of a child, your majesty. What do you say? Should we have one?"

"Second consort." Before Bree could say anything, Yakov raised his head and glanced at the man next to him with a sweet smile on his face. "Do you want to turn this celebratory banquet into a funeral? If you are willing, then I have no problem fulfilling your wish."

"And do you think that a mutt like you can kill me?" Ahmar smiled back at him.

Yakov narrowed his eyes. He was not in the mood for the ’Let’s see how far the first consort can be pushed’ game. He stated, "A mutt is still better than a blood sucking leech."

"Wohohoho, did you just call me a leech? I hope you did not just call me a mutt." Ahmar held one hand in the air and remarked in a threatening voice.

"Why? Are you going to cry?" Yakov asked with a raised brow.

"No, but I can make you cry."

"Alright." Bree stepped in with a clipped note in her voice. "If you two are done acting like two children, can you please go and socialise? I believe there are a few people who want to talk to you."

Bree knew that the two of them were like cats and dogs, but their dynamics were worse than what she expected and thought. Even in a social event, they didn’t stop to take a jibe at one another.

She left the two men who were quibbling with one another and started to socialise. Of course, as soon as she appeared the people who were waiting to suck up to the royal family rushed over. They greeted and smiled at Bree, surrounding her so tightly that even a gust of air would find it hard to blow past them.

Seeing this, Ahmar, who was quibbling with Yakov, paused and turned to look at the first consort with a teasing smile. "My, it seems like the monkeys took advantage of the cat fight."

Yakov rolled his eyes as he smacked the arm that was resting on his shoulders and walked away.

"What, you are going to leave me alone? Come on, you know I am scared," Ahmar teased as he chased after Yakov while picking up the glass of blood wine.

"Shoo! Stop bothering me!"

Bree had no idea that her two consorts were yet to give up on their quarrel. After three hours of continuous smiling, she finally found a way to escape from the banquet hall. However, as soon as she stepped outside and was thinking of taking a rest, she heard a very irritating voice from behind.

"Your Majesty."
