Chapter 281: A Siren’s Greed
"You cannot walk away from me, Cian," Rosalie’s panicked voice came from behind, which made Cian roll his eyes. He didn’t turn around and reached out to hold the knob of the door when the woman behind him shrieked, "I am telling you, you cannot walk away from me. I—I am your mate too!"
Cian paused and turned to look at the woman behind him. "What did you say?"
Rosalie licked her lips and said to him, "I didn’t say this because I knew that it would cause strife between you and Her Majesty, and I didn’t want it to happen, truly, Cian. But you might have heard that after that incident, my fox receded deep within me. However, when I met you —I felt my fox awaken...I think— I think it’s because you are my mate, Cian."
Though a person having two mates was nothing new; after all, Bree had more than just one mate; Cian simply felt amused at the outrageous statement of the woman. Because he knew that she was lying. This woman was barking mad if she thought that he would believe her words.
The reason was simple.
Because he felt nothing towards her. Cian was not resistant to finding his mate but because he craved the one person who would be his closest companion, his guard was pretty much lower than the rest. If not, he wouldn’t have noticed that Bree was his mate at first sight.
He didn’t have the same feeling when it came to Rosalie.
"Please go home, Your Highness. It seems you are dreaming with your eyes open."
"You think I am lying?" Rosalie’s voice turned sharp. "Think about it carefully, Cian. The first time you met me, you talked with me and you were willing to get close to me when you didn’t even like other women. Isn’t it because you knew that I was your mate? What is it? Do you think that Bree would not accept me? Is that why you are not willing to admit that I am your mate?"
"Like I said, you need to go back home, your highness. You are speaking nonsense without even thinking things through."
"I knew you would do this!" she yelled as if she could not hear a thing Cian was trying to tell her. "I knew you would do this! Sirens like you are eager to get power in your hands. Just because I don’t have the power, you want to turn your back on me for Bree! I just knew it."
Ignoring her yells, Cian stepped outside. He turned to look at the guard who was waiting for him and said to him, "Make sure that she is barred from entering the palace from now. She is not unruly and disrespectful towards the empress."
The guard nodded. "I understand, your highness."
Cian nodded and walked away, hoping that his anger would roll off his body instead of clinging to his skin.
Jesse, who had come running and stood outside after hearing the ins and outs of the matter, fell a step behind him and spoke in a calm voice, "You don’t need to think too much about this, your highness. That woman is crazy and lost in her own dreams. She cannot fathom the difference between her dreams and reality. I believe she doesn’t even know the slightest thing about you and what you want."
"I know," Cian raised his hand and pressed it against his forehead. "I just feel frustrated. She made claims of things that I have never done to her."
He had never led her on or given any signals that the two of them were more than acquaintances. If anything, he was just a bit more tolerant towards her because of his brother but never, not once, did he say or do a thing that would make her think that they were going to end up together.
She was also wrong in thinking that he was refusing her because she didn’t have enough power like Bree, even though sirens were drawn to power and authority—they were not selfish to the point that they would turn blind. If that woman was really his mate, he would have given her the right to become one.
But she was wrong.
Many still believed that he had made the claim on Bree out of desperation and that she was seduced and charmed by him because he was a siren. That he was not her true mate, but Cian knew very well in his heart that he would have never accepted a woman if she was not his mate.
He was never one to chase after power. If he did, then he would be sitting on the throne of Emperor by now.
This greed of sirens could be deadly.
It had been deeply burnt into his head. His father had chased after his mother because she was the queen of the sea, the woman with the most powerful authority and he was nothing but a small dancer in the court where Cian’s mother ruled.
However, his father’s greed and ambition had pushed him into seducing his mother. There had hardly been a woman or man who could avoid or resist the seduction of a siren. His mother had given in and the two of them had Cian.
His father had thought and believed that after having Cian, he would be taken as the emperor but he wasn’t. Instead, a concubine with no power and authority was given the title. His mother had done this to stabilise the court but his father had taken it as the greatest offence.
Furious, he had deserted his mother and it had left a mark on his mother. Because his father had only cared about the throne and the satisfaction of his greed, he had never really paid attention to Cian, who had grown up on his own.
His world, where he had been used as a tool and a chess piece, was filled with loneliness. Thus he had wanted nothing but a mate whom he could claim as his own. So how could he not notice it? How could he walk on the same path as his father?
