Chapter 244: A gentleman
Bree raised her head and when she saw the mutinous expression on Ahmar’s face, she felt her lips twitch in amusement. Though she had no idea what the poor man had gone through the past few months, from his expression alone, it was enough to know that he didn’t have an easy time.
"Alright, don’t make that expression," Bree raised her hand and patted the back of his hand.
Though her actions meant nothing and she was only doing it for the sake of making Ahmar feel a bit better, the man still felt his heart skip several beats the second she touched him.
And when she pulled her fingers away from him, the loss of warmth left an inexplicable chill in his heart.
"You are quite heartless, Your Majesty," Ahmar said to Bree, who raised her head and looked at him with a frown.
"What do you mean?" What had she done now for him to say such words?
Ahmar smiled at her before leaning down. He pushed his face forward such that Bree had to lean back but the man was so close to her personal space that it was impossible for her to look anywhere but him.
"I worked so hard, just because I wanted you to praise me, and yet you—your majesty—you don’t even look at me." Ahmar felt heartbroken when he saw how indifferent Bree was towards him.
Why did he work so hard? Why did he let go of his sword and pick up the quill and lock himself in the office to do this boring work? Wasn’t it all because he wanted her to pay more attention to him? And yet—she didn’t even take another look at him, kicking him out of her office as soon as she got what she wanted.
What a scumbag.
Bree indeed felt like a scumbag when Ahmar said those words out loud, even though she hadn’t even touched a strand of his hair—his words made her feel a bit guilty as if she had done something that she shouldn’t have.
She raised her hand and pushed the man away from her face before saying, "I didn’t mean that I was just —"
"You were just," Ahmar trailed off as he caught hold of her hand and pushed her fingers away from his lips. His eyes darkened as he pulled Bree off the chair and caught her by her waist. "Your majesty, you might be excellent when dealing with matters of court but you really don’t know how to praise your husband when he does a good job."
"I thought that you were my subordinate," Bree countered when the man pushed her against the table. Her heartbeat escalated and jumped but she didn’t push the man away. Remember the plan, Bree, she told herself. The plan was to seduce these men and let them work for her until Semel was dealt with.
She also needed their protection until she could find a way to get out of this world.
’You are the ruler of this world and yet you still want to leave?’ Somewhere at the back of her head, she heard Saphira’s lazy voice and Bree pursed her lips.
She didn’t respond to the sleepy dragon, as she knew that the dragon was not yet fully awake. And just as she expected, Saphira went back to sleep; This had been going on ever since the accident with the Golem.
Bree didn’t know if this was a good thing or not.
"I am your subordinate, your majesty." Ahmar agreed as he pulled Bree closer, feeling a sense of accomplishment when the woman didn’t push him away.
Was she finally moved? He had no idea that Bree had already decided to use some favours in exchange for using him and the other consorts for the sake of her protection and to return to her world.
Instead, he believed that his loyalty and actions had finally moved Bree into acknowledging him as her consort.
The heat in his body stirred as he leaned in close to Bree, who sucked in a breath but didn’t refuse his closeness.
Seeing her response, the actions of the man turned bolder as he reduced the distance between the two and tilted his head to one side.
"May I, your majesty?" he asked politely.
Bree, who wasn’t used to the closeness of a man, raised her head in surprise. For she had never seen a man question or ask for her consent before every man who had tried to touch her; they had just gone ahead and done it.
She blinked her eyes and asked, "W–Why are you asking me?"
"What do you mean, your majesty?" Ahmar smiled at her as if she were the one being silly. "Even if we are husband and wife, asking for your permission to touch you is my duty. No matter what bond we share—as long as I don’t have your consent, I will not do what you don’t like."
This was what his father taught him after he was nearly abandoned by Bree. Of course, the lessons were enough to make him throw up for he was a man who was quick to pick up on a sword technique but how to make his wife happy? That was something that Ahmar could never learn without three smacks on the back of his head.
Because he was certainly not a gentleman. But his father told him that if he wanted to win the heart of this woman, he needed to pick up his slack and act like a man with manners and not a barbarian.
Back then, Ahmar felt as if his father was being too foolish. Why should a warrior do something so useless? Only now did he understand why his father asked him to do it.
It was worth learning just to see these golden eyes look at him with confusion and a hint of admiration.
So, this was the kind of man Bree liked?
If that was the case, then he didn’t mind faking it till his final breath.
