Chapter 208: Ball or trap?
They all waited for the effect of the potion to wash down before they turned to look at the young unicorn elf who was crouching on the floor. Gone was the long blueish hair which was now replaced with reddish brown curls that had a string of white in between, her face was rounder and with more baby fat and dots of freckles were sprayed all over her nose making her look adorable.
" How..how do I look?" asked the little elf as she raised her head and blinked her sea greens at them.
" Ah, how could I forget?" Yakov suddenly exclaimed from the side causing Bree to turn around and look at him as he slightly twisted his neck and looked back at her. " Unicorn elves are very fond of their looks as well."
Bree had never seen a unicorn elf before and she had no idea that they considered their looks so important either, however, when she saw the young elf’s eyes turning teary, she immediately said, " You look good, very pretty."
Maybe it was because Bree has been kind to her, the young elf didn’t believe what she said instead she turned to look at Blaise who has been more honest with her.
Noticing that the young elf was looking at him, Blaise raised a brow and said flatly, " I am more into raven heads but you will do as well."
"Third consort!"
" You look fine!" After being reprimanded by Bree, he simplified his praise making the unicorn elf calm down as he turned to look at Bree and said, " I will leave the job of creating an alternate identity of this elf to you, your majesty."
"Idiot!" A voice roared through the dark room as Duke Cilantro slumped to his knees, his entire being was shivering as he lowered his head and tried to make himself look as small as possible but the problem was that even though he was trying to squeeze himself into a curled baby position, the Duke was too big to make himself look inconspicuous.
The figure that was flickering inside the mirror glared at the top of his head causing Duke Cilantro to shiver even more as he rubbed his head on the carpeted floor and said in a trembling voice, " Uncle, I swear I tried really hard... it was just that the circumstances were like that and I couldn’t——"
" Shut up! Don’t hand me excuses one after another, do you think that I don’t know how stupid you are?" The voice once again lashed out in an agitated scolding. " And don’t call me uncle, call me lord have you forgotten what I have done for you?"
"N..No of course not my lord," Duke Cilantro immediately let out a yelp and shook his head, following the command of his uncle at once without saying anything else. " But you don’t need to worry, my lord... I have done everything as per your instructions, the queen’s meal has been thoroughly drugged even the water she is drinking hasn’t been left alone, she is totally under my control, uncle."
" At least you are smart enough for that, or else I would have started looking for someone else," the man in the mirror was none other than the previous Duke Balzac, with his brown hair lined with greys, he huffed at his nephew with a rugged face. " Is the queen or her consorts digging around your territory?"
" Not at all," replied Duke Cilantro at once as he shook his head with a proud expression on his face. " I am keeping them all in check, the queen is easier to fool and her relationship with the two consorts is not good either, thus as long as I keep a tight rein on her, nothing will go wrong."
" The Queen is a woman, of course, she is easier to fool after all that would a woman know about running an Empire, she is like a little girl playing house with dolls," scoffed Duke Balzac as he with a contemptuous expression on his face. " But she is not whom you need to worry about, I have heard all about her antics from the capital, she might have been doing it because she somehow figured out what was wrong, however, she is still the same foolish woman, if she was fooled once she can be fooled twice again and that is why I am asking you not to pay any attention on her but instead start paying more attention to her consorts, they are the ones whom you should be worried about."
" I will take note of them as well, my lord," Duke Cilantro agreed at once as he bowed his head and waited for his uncle to speak further, there was nothing that he wanted to tell his uncle at the moment, there was, of course, the issue of the Phoenix offspring’s getting weaker day by day but he would rather not say anything about that to his uncle when the latter was already angry enough at him.
Duke Balzac had no idea what was going on in the head of his nephew, just like Duke Cilantro he was confident enough to believe that he would never be fooled by anyone, to him his nephew was an idiot whom he has trained and personally brought up, that was why he never once thought that Duke Cilantro would one day start hiding things from him.
He rubbed his beard and skimmed the edges of his rugged jaw as he further pondered over the situation. " It doesn’t matter whether you keep an eye on them or not if they stay any longer at the territory then it will become more and more troublesome, that is why you should just send them packing before something happens and we both end up getting caught by them."
" Then what do you suggest, my lord?" Duke Cilantro was all brawn and no brain at all, the reason he was able to run this territory this long was only that he was being guided by his uncle throughout the entire time.
Duke Balzac narrowed his eyes as he tapped his hands on the armrest of the chair he was sitting on as he carefully answered Duke Cilantro’s question, " Hold a ball, invite all the nobles of your territory and then do something like this——"
The two men were so engrossed in their conversation that they didn’t even pay attention to the small paper bird that was perched on the railings behind them, it waited for the two men to finish speaking before it spread its wings and flew away.
Blaise held out his finger as the paper bird he has sent to the Duke’s room returned, the second it returned it started twittering in his ears, he hummed along as if he was responding to the little bird and when he heard what the two dukes have planned for the queen, his eyes narrowed ever slightly before he snapped his fingers and the paper bird unravelled itself and fell on the floor in the form of a crumpled up paper.
" So what do the two of them have in their heads?" asked Yakov from the tea table where he was sitting causing Blaise to roll his eyes and turn around with a smile that was filled with nothing but spite. " I want to ask this all along, why are you here? And what exactly do you think you are doing by sneaking into my room as you wish?"
Yakov placed the teacup that he was holding in his hand calm as he pleased before he turned his head to look at Blaise and said in a soft voice, "I am not sneaking inside your room, I knocked on your door and asked whether I can come in or not."
" Exactly and I refused but here you are sitting in my room bold as brass," said Blaise as he walked towards him and reached out his hands to pick up the teacup from the table and then looked at the high-class tea leaves that Yakov was sipping on. " As expensive as always aren’t you, first consort?"
" What did that bird tell you?"Yakov pressed on ignoring whatever Blaise was saying, he seemed as if he was an employer asking his employee about the situation at the office.
Blaise’s lips twitched but he knew that there was no way he would be able to harm the man who was sitting in front of him, especially not when Bree was in the room next to theirs and with Yakov’s stubbornness, he wouldn’t leave until he finds out what the duke was planning. So, he relayed everything the Duke was discussing with his uncle only for Yakov to laugh out loud as he leaned back on his chair and then hooked his long fingers together as he smiled and looked at Blaise with a sly expression on his face. "It’s an interesting plan but what if it was to turn around and bite them all in their ass?"
