Chapter 188: Something was mixed in her food!

Bree didn’t know what Yakov and Blaise talked about with each other outside the dining room but when they returned. Yakov was stiffer than he usually was and Blaise was smiling even more brightly as if he just had some great fun at the expense of someone, Bree was pretty sure who this someone was.

" I had them prepare this from the finest meat, your majesty." Duke Cilantro chattered away as he introduced every single dish in front of her, from the juicy beef patties topped with savoury sauce to fresh fish balls dunked in salivating juicy soup that had such an enriching scent that Bree almost wanted to take a bite.

But unfortunately, she couldn’t because every single dish in front of her was nothing but slow-acting poison. Of course, the Duke wouldn’t be stupid enough to really poison her but at the same time she could feel that something was wrong, her skin that has been normal till now was slowly heating up and that had nothing to do with the burning flames in the fireplace.

She looked down at the patties that were sitting in front of her and heard Saphira growl inside her head, since the dishes passed the poison check then it could only mean one thing —— something else has been added to her food, something that couldn’t be detected by the silver needle. But what?

" I am glad to see something so good, Duke." Bree smiled as she placed her fork on the plate and with a slight flick of her wrist, hit the tip of the fork on her plate lightly. This was something that she has already discussed with Yakov earlier, since they had no idea what the Duke was planning they have to make sure to be careful at every single moment.

Before arriving at the territory, Yakov explained to her that in case she felt that something was wrong with her food or anything else for the matter, she should signal it to him by this small gesture.

She felt Yakov raise his head ever so slightly before he turned to look at Blaise whose smile widened and he flicked his fingers lightly before furtively picking up the food in front of him and taking a bite.

So does that mean that the food was okay for eating now?

It wasn’t the second she forked a piece of the patty and brought it to her mouth, she felt it vanish right in front of her eyes but it happened so quickly that no one was able to cotton on to what just happened. Only Bree got a quick look at what was happening in front of her and that too only because she tasted nothing but air the second she clomped her mouth down.

Fantastic, does this mean that she would not be able to eat anything?

" Is the meat delicious, your majesty?" Duke Cilantro asked as he looked at Bree with shiny eyes and a smiling face similar to that of her next-door neighbour. The man who lived in the apartment next door to her had the same smile and looked rather approachable but he was also greedy and completely uncooperative. Even now she remembered how his package would often be delivered to her door and she would have to send it to his apartment but instead of calling the delivery service the man actually went ahead and asked her to cooperate with him a little since it was only slight discomfort.

But when she asked him to come and pick up his parcels he would always complain about having a backache or something of the sort.

All in all, he was just an annoying old man who liked taking advantage of others!

Now that she was looking at Duke Cilantro and his cheeky grin she couldn’t help but feel that he resembled that old man. Just the very thought was enough to make her tremble with anger, really this guy... he was just like that shady old man!

" Of course, it’s so delicious that I can feel it melting on my tongue." Like literally it was vanishing the second it touched her lips.

" Ahahaha, is that so? I am so glad that you liked it, your majesty!" Duke Cilantro motioned his aide to serve the red wine that he was holding in his hands before taking a large bite of his food. " Your majesty, is there any specific reason for you to come here?"

Bree raised her hand and allowed the aide with short brown hair to fill up her wine glass and took a whiff of the sweet scent that was wafting from the wine. Hmm, at least this looks like it was normal to drink but she should still be on her guard, she smiled at Duke Cilantro’s question and lightly said, " Isn’t it because you were allowed to increase the taxes that were imposed on the harbour? The other territories are not happy with the sudden increase in the taxes and I was tired of listening to their complaints that’s why I decided to come here for a break."

Pretending to take a sip of the wine, she arched a brow at the Duke who went very still and smiled softly, " However, I am not here to question you, Duke. As long as you cooperate with me a little and work hard to fill the treasury of the dragon palace, everything else can still be considered."

Before the Duke could say anything, Yakov parted his lips and suddenly spoke up, " I believe that this is not good your majesty."

If this was another female she would have gone submissive in front of her mate especially when Yakov oozes such dominance that it was impossible to ignore, with his accentuating muscles and subtle yet potent alpha vibes that basically spilt from him. With just one glance it was easy enough to see that the man was a born leader through and through but Bree didn’t even flick a glance at him. Nor did she frown at being disturbed instead with a voice as dry as a shrivelled-up corpse, she said, " Are you going to tell me what I can or cannot do, first consort?"
