The Devil's Warrior Queen -
Chapter 376: Blend in
Chapter 376: Blend in
As they wandered around in the town square, Zoya couldn’t help but become in awe at the spectacular findings and the blend of supernatural creatures cohabiting together.
It was a rarity for all walks of paranormal life to cohabit and live naturally in one place, in fact it had never been heard of, leaving her in disbelief of the sight gracing her eyes.
But there, in East Ravka, the impossible became possible. The residents already seemed used to it as they went about their day casually, engaging with other beings.
"This is..marvelling." Zoya said in a whispering breath.
"It is indeed." Aldric murmured in thoughts.
"You don’t have to leave if you don’t want to, you can still make things right for you." She said softly as she tilted her head up to meet his blue eyes, which now looked like ice crystals in the sun.
Without a whiff of unwavering resolve or hesitation from him, he stood his ground, firmly in opposition to her "It would only feel wrong, but this." He paused as he took her delicate hands in his, caressing the back of her palm with soft caresses "This feels perfectly right, being here with you."
Amidst the soft clamoring erupting from the town, his reassuring voice as the words rolled off his lips made every other sound tune out into muffled sounds.
Her stormy grey eyes suddenly cleared out as her eyes gleamed with tears, making them look like glittering stars in a beautiful pool and then, a doting smile drew her lips up as her heart became overwhelmed with emotions she couldn’t comprehend, emotions that only he could effortlessly elicit within her. It was bittersweet and painfully pleasing because she had no idea what awaited them. Would it be tragedy or a happy ending?
Despite being aware of the fact that things might go awry from then on, she decided to shove the pessimistic thoughts to the back of her mind and rather focus on the present, with him.
Her smile widened to reveal her beautiful pearls and her beautiful grey eyes radiated brighter as she held onto his arm.
"I’m hungry, let’s find something to eat." She said excitedly, despite the fact that they were both fugitives trapped in the kingdom, but alas, their only protection was the public, who were unaware of their role.
"Sure, but first we have to get out of these clothes, blend in with the public." Aldric implied and she nodded.
Without wasting any more time, he led her through the bustling crowd, passing through alleys until they emerged into a street similar to the one they were in.
"It’s so nice to see every kind of paranormal being together, it’s an enthralling sight." Zoya said with a smile as her eyes scoured through the contrasting beings who engaged casually.
"The other kingdoms lack civilization and until they gain knowledge of that, they’ll continue to stay divided." Aldric remarked as he led her through the street.
"You’re right, the only thing they see is our differences and bloodline, but your kingdom sees a future with diversity. It would have been a great place to live, if not for our heads which are risked being on a stake." Zoya mumbled out with a grim expression.
"Now it’s not so great." Aldric sighed as they stopped in front of a nice looking shop with a sign written on it which read ’Madam Helen’s Silk And Cotton Dresses’.
"Let’s get changed." He said as he pulled her toward the shop.
Opening the door, they both walked into the spacious shop which was nicely built and furnished, a dress shop suitable for only people of a high ranking status.
The walls were made of expensive oak wood and velvet chaise lounges sat at the corner, while a few rack of clothes housing beautiful gowns and male clothing were arranged here and there for the customers sightseeing.
A few workers scampered around the place and as they walked in, their eyes dropped on the two mysterious couples and as their gazes scoured through them, with one glance at their luxurious outfits and captivating looks, they deemed them of a noble status and they immediately fixed their attention on them.
"Good day my gracious lord and lady, what can we help you with? We have the best tailoring service in the kingdom." A chubby woman in her mid thirties spoke out as she approached them with a bow, while the others dispatched to their various works.
"We certainly shouldn’t have come here if you were trying to avert attention from us." Zoya muttered under her breath as she craned her head toward him.
Without saying anything, he simply smiled at her before returning his gaze to the woman who seemed eager to dig a fortune out of them for clothes.
"We’re not here to waste your time, we’re just here for simple clothes, very simple." Aldric said, emphasizing on the words, only to disappoint the woman as her face fell with dissatisfaction.
"Oh, but why wear simple clothes? Obviously, you’re both of noble rankings, it’s only appropriate to dress as one, nothing less." The woman said in a hearty voice, trying to persuade them.
But he swiftly cut her short as he stared at her with hard eyes, making her swallow back the remaining words of persuasion "Get us simple outfits, mine in black and hers in...Also in black."
Zoya narrowed her eyes at him and even though he wasn’t looking her way, he could already feel her piercing gaze.
"White would get easily dirty, remember we have to go to the forest." Aldric reasoned out and she nodded, leaving the woman in confusion.
"The forest?" The woman queried, she seemed to poke her nose and it quickly irritated Aldric, but he had to evade any suspicion on them.
"Ahh, yes we’re going on a picnic and she loves nature." Aldric said smoothly as he took her hand in his, bringing it to his head level as he planted a delicate kiss on the back of her palm.
His sudden actions left Zoya flustered, as well as the woman who was grinning at the sight of the beautiful couple.
"I’ll show you lovely couples some simple outfits for a picnic, follow me." The hearty lady implied and they nodded as she led them to a small compartment area behind thick curtains.
The room was as nicely furnished as the rest of the shop, with a velvet chaise at one corner and a single rack of simple clothes, consisting of both male and female clothings.
"This is the changing room, but they are also simple outfits to choose from this rack, so please take your time and when you’ve made a choice, just yell for me." The hearty lady said, flashing them a grin with naughtiness in her eyes.
"But..." Zoya was about to intrude when Aldric gave her a slight nudge, his deep voice burying hers in the background as he spoke "Thank you for your service."
The lady smiled before disappearing through the thick curtains, leaving them alone in the small room.
Zoya’s eyes suddenly narrowed toward him as she shot him a skeptical glance "You should have asked for another room."
"That is the least of our problems, besides it would mean blowing our covers, it’s only normal for a couple to change together."Aldric drawled as he flashed her a crooked grin. His teasing eyes held her in position as he struck her speechless with his sudden flirting.
Her lips twitched in nervousness, but she quickly hid it with a scoff as she rolled her eyes, while muttering "Whatever."
"So what outfit would you prefer, wife?" Aldric queried with not a single ounce of pretence as he moved to the rack of clothes, his fingers moving through each one.
At the mention of the word ’wife’ from him, she suddenly choked "W-What?" She spluttered. Her brows furrowed in surprise, while her eyes gleamed with amusement at his flirting skills.
"There’s no one here, you can drop the act now." She said stiffly as she turned away from him, dropping her attention on the clothes, but her attention was far from the clothes.
"This one looks nice." Aldric murmured as he ignored her remark, while bringing out a simple, yet pretty black dress for her, but it was simple enough to walk and run comfortably in. Perfect for their escape.
"Yes, it’s perfect. Now let’s dress up and leave quickly, I feel like every second we waste, the guards draw nearer at catching us." Zoya whispered with eyes darting around the place prudently, in case anyone was eavesdropping.
"There’s no rush, they could never guess our next motive, we’re perfectly safe, until dawn breaks but of course we would be out of here before then." Aldric reassured her as he cupped her face in his hands, his icy blue eyes dissolving into her stormy grey ones.
The intensity of their striking orbs piercing into one another elicited the suppressed passions to surface out of their hidden depths.
Her lips suddenly turned dry and she instinctively licked them, but as soon as she did, the primal urge to do wicked things to her body flickered across his eyes and he swallowed, making his Adam’s apple bobble up and down his throat.
The mere sight of him swallowing was rather enticing, their simple actions now suddenly elevated to seductive gestures that the both of them found hard to resist.
