The Devil's Warrior Queen -
Chapter 172: Broken
Chapter 172: Broken
At that moment, he was no longer the devil’s son or a vampire king, she could see the reflection of a broken childhood and an empty soul devoid of affection, one yearning to be seen, heard and accepted, but as he narrated the ordeal of his hideous past, there was no hurt or pain in his eyes, there was only an abyss of emptiness sucking out every whiff of feeling.
His voice was impassive and cold as he spoke, every word reeling with a fathomable darkness, his story had been nothing but tragic, breaking him in and out, it wasn’t surprising he became a heartless mad man after the events that had transpired in his past.
She listened attentively till he narrated to the end. As he spoke of murdering every single person in the castle, his crimson eyes lit up with a sadistic glint, a fiendish grin split his lips open while he ran his tongue over his canines in reminiscence, playing the images vividly in his head.
He could still remember his brothers, step mother and the King begging for their lives so earnestly before he gave them their tragic, torturous end, but the look in his mother’s face was one he could never forget, no matter how many millennia he lived for. It was a look of regret, but the reason for her regret was still obscure to him.
Did she regret birthing him or she regretted punishing him for his father’s sins? It was a question that rang in his head continuously after killing his mother, but he never got an answer, even the seers didn’t have one.
"Did you feel better?" Rama queried, her voice bringing him out of his reverie, the cold emptiness in his eccentric eyes made a shiver run down her spine, it was as clear as a crystal ball that he retained not even a wavering flicker of sympathy or remorse for what he had done.
She couldn’t blame him, after all they had treated him like a monster, so he became one. She wondered if he would have turned out differently if he was treated in contrast to his past, loved and accepted not by everyone but at least his mother.
"I felt nothing, as the years went by my immortality became a curse to me, my only wish was to die." He answered.
"Why? Because you were tired of living for such a long period of time?" She asked.
He looked at her thoughtfully, a faint smile crossing his lips as he said "Because I had nothing to live for."
"But now you do." She muttered with a wistful smile grazing her lips while he caressed her cheeks fondly.
"Not only do I have something to live for, but also to die for."
"But you can’t die." She trailed off in a whisper.
"You’re wrong, my physical form can’t die but my soul can. It dies when...." The words clogged his throat like a lump of wood stuck inside it, his jaws clenched and for the first time he averted his gaze, unable to look her straight in the eyes.
"It dies when I die." She completed, then she swallowed bitterly.
"And that’s why when a demon goes berserk after his mate dies, he or she is executed." He divulged to her.
"But you’re immortal and if you do go berserk, it’ll be forever, not only will you burn the world down, you’ll make waste of every realm, you’ll destroy both the underworld and the celestial realm, leaving nothing in your wake and it’s even worse because you’re immortal, so it’ll be impossible to quench that burning rage in you, it’ll engulf you whole, in and out." She reasoned out with a thoughtful gasp as her brows furrowed.
"The devil knows better that’s the reason he’s not trying to kill you Rama..."
"He’s trying to separate us." They both said in unison, the realization made her eyes widen in trepidation and fear that overwhelmed her more than before.
Dying didn’t scare her this much, but being separated from Draco for all of eternity made her blood run freezing cold, it was a circumstance she didn’t even want to think of, a possibility she wanted to find to be inconceivable, she couldn’t live without him, she didn’t want to live without him.
"But how? Is that even possible?" She exclaimed with terror, her radiant golden skin turning pale in her face.
"Unfortunately we’ll never find out. I’ll trap him using his own strategies." Draco said confidently.
"What do you mean? How can you trap the devil? Is that even possible? What strategy are you talking about?" She shot her questions in curiosity, eyes gleaming with worry and fear, she could feel her chest tighten at the what ifs that rang continuously in her head, the doubts and unsettlement that clawed at her skin made her uneasy, leading her to pace back and forth in front of Draco.
Draco suddenly pulled her toward him, trapping her between his strong arms as he made her face him, making her pacing episode abruptly halt.
"Rama." He called with a soft tone, her nervous breathing echoed in his ears, he could see worry, fear and doubts whirl beneath her striking eyes.
"Breath for a moment and stop worrying so much or you’ll go into both a mental and physical breakdown, I’m here aren’t I? So there’s nothing for you to worry about." His voice was an hypnotic potion that whisked into her ears, as if brainwashing her and for a moment she felt as though he was compelling her, but he wasn’t.
She nodded as he spoke and then exhaled and inhaled softly, closing her eyes as she let his hypnotic voice sink into her skull. As she opened her eyes, her body felt rather light.
"Did you compel me?" She queried as she shot him a skeptical glance.
"Of course not." He scoffed and she observed his face for a moment with narrowed eyes as if she could attain the truth.
"Alright then, so how are you going to trap him? What sort of strategy are you using against him?" She queried, less tense than before.
"It’s a sort of hibernation process used as a punishment for ancient demons he doesn’t want to get rid of. It depends on how long he wants them out, sometimes a millennia, or more, but only one demon has been hibernated so far for going against him." Draco explained and she nodded.
"Is he the only one capable of hibernating other demons?" She asked.
"And me." He replied.
"So how does it work?"
"By fueling the forces of darkness forged from the pit of hell, it needs full concentration or else just a tiny bit of disturbance can result to its disruption, but no need to fret, I’ll pay full attention for the next time we meet again." He assured.
Although, she was quite lost on how this hibernation thing worked, but she knew very well that she would serve as his distraction and not concentration, meanwhile the devil had no distraction, no vulnerability nor leverage to sway him out of track and alter his attention but Draco did.
Her intrusive thoughts whispered to her ears that she would be the end of him.
"But I am your distraction, besides that it might not work because he has nothing to worry about, nothing to protect, he has no distraction and that’s our weakness, because we’re each other’s distraction. I am your distraction and weakness." She stated out in a logical sense as she shook her head thoughtfully, clutching her gown nervously while she started pacing around again.
"They’re a million ways to imprison him, hibernation isn’t the only way so there’s no need to be afraid." He said confidently.
Rama stopped pacing as she turned mechanically to look at him "I have every reason to be afraid, there might be a million ways to imprison the devil but I can bet that out of the million ways, it’ll be a hassle for one to work, hell I doubt one would even work." She pointed out in exasperation.
"Rama, that’s enough, take a nap and you’ll feel better, plus you’re forgetting I’m no different than the devil himself, it seems as if you’ve forgotten who my father is so soon." His voice was tender but there was an underlying hint of menace.
"I trust you..." Her sentence was abruptly disrupted by a distant sound of rumbling clouds that reverberated ominously above them.
Her brows furrowed as she veered around and peered her eyes through the window to see the bright blue sky slowly become infused with darkness as the ominous rumblings intensified. The neon blue skies, in a moment was suddenly tinged with an inky black hue, conveying a shade of darkness that left an otherworldly impression on the beings below.
In a swift change, the skies darkened, every hint of light was snuffed out leaving everything below and above in perpetual darkness. Her heart jumped to her throat when she realized it was no natural occurrence but a dark supernatural one.
The burning candles in the room were snuffed out by an eerie breeze as she jerked in fear, unable to catch a single object in sight.
"What’s happening?" She asked Draco, she couldn’t see him but she could feel his presence beside her, making her racing heart calm.
"The dark witches." He replied in a nonchalant tone as he pulled her closer.
